I agree completely Dave.

As has been said, why have an invisibility device and a chameleon circuit, which is a much more clever idea, if you can see a camouflaged item in front of you you are less likely to walk into it.

(Perhaps it is something the Doctor whipped up when the chameleon circuit refused to repair itself)
 
Sorry to bring this back up again, but suddenly a bit of information came my way.

The TARDIS has been invisible before, apparently the cloaking device was used in the Patrick Troughton story The Invasion back in 1968

How would the TARDIS appear, even with the chameleon circuit, right in the middle of a relatively small room, whilst it was in use?
 
If you mean "occupy the same space" then it couldn't do that whether it was invisible or not. If you mean "appear without being noticed", well it couldn't, except that the TARDIS is psychic. If it can automatically translate languages for its occupants, why can it not act like the Doctor's psychic paper and make people believe that it was always there?
