How will you read ADWD?

So, how will you go about reading ADWD? Will you go out and buy it the day it comes out, and sit and read it non-stop until you are finished? Will you take a leisurely pace in order to soak it all in? Read it quickly, and then read it again to catch anything you missed the first time?

Will you be coming to the GRRM forum here whilst reading to ask questions, or avoid it altogether until you are done in order to avoid spoilers?

I will go out and by it the day it comes out and start it right away. As much as I would like to sit and read non-stop, I know that is no longer a reality with a daughter under 1 year old. She has seriously cut into my reading time. :p But I will try to finish it as quickly as I can since I'm sure it will be a page turner like the rest.

I have a feeling I will want to come here with questions, but most likely will wait until I have finished the book. I really don't want to come across any spoilers. I haven't even read the preview chapters because I didn't want to know what was going to happen until I could read the whole book.

I will buy it the day it comes out. My schedule will not allow me to read non-stop like I once did, but I still expect to finish it in a few days! Then I will most likely reread it right away, unless something really tics me off!:) then I may wait a few days!

Unsure about reading forum posts before finishing, I don't want to know anything before I read it yet will likely be unable to resist checking in with you all! :D

I have already my planned my Dragons release ritual. Is it crazy that I already know EXACTLY what I'm going to do?! (Can't help it, I'm a control freak!)

I pre-ordered my copy from Amazon pretty much as soon as the release date was announced. It's released on a Tuesday and, being a cheapskate, I opted for free postage, so it'll probably be Thursday or Friday before I get (I'm having it sent to my work so that there's someone there to receive it. There's no way this baby will fit through my letterbox!) Either way, I'm waiting till the Friday night, and when I get home from work, I'm going to lock the door, mute my phone, then start reading. It'll probably take me most of the weekend, but I'm not going out the house until it's done. I will probably make a giant pot of chilli or something in advance, so that I can nibble burritos all weekend without having to take time out to properly cook, clean or any other distraction.

I will visit these forums, but I'll be avoiding the spoiler threads like the plague until I've finished.

I discovered ASOIAF last year. I live in Argentina and a friend lent me his books (all four), which I read back to back without any of the anxiety that most of you suffered between one volume and the next. Now I am eagerly waiting for ADWD.

I will be traveling to the US in late July with very little free time, but on my way back I made sure to schedule a very long stopover in Miami to be able to buy the book. I arrive on August 1 at midnight. I've booked a room at a hotel near the airport, reserved a rental car, printed out a map that marks the way to the nearest Barnes and Noble and I intend to hit the bookstore sometime around 10:00 AM. There I hope to purchase a copy of ADWD and read as much as I can of it on the eight hour flight back home.

I found this forum only a few days ago and have been reading it intensely since, with great detriment to my work (I am partner at a law firm). I only read the first four books once and had to return them to their rightful owner, so I cannot re-read to check what many of you discuss here, like the "R+L=J" theory and similar stuff (all conveniently reduced to cryptic acronyms) that I had never thought about.

I am impressed and delighted with your knowledge of Westeros and your interesting viewpoints. This forum will certainly make it easier to wait for Book Six.

I will do my best to stay away from here from July 12 until I finally lay my hands on ADWD and finish it!

Quick question: I also need to buy Books 1 to 4 (which I borrowed and returned), but I'm afraid that the ADWD edition that will be available on August 1 will be a hardback edition and I would really like all five books to "match". Are hardback editions of the first books easily available at any bookstore? Does anybody know anything about timing on a paperback edition of ADWD?

It's nice to be able to interact with all of you after having read your "threads" (dating back to 2005) in the last few days. Great to share this virtual "meat and mead".

Regards.

I'll treat it like chocolate. I'll buy it, think "that'll last me a week," and in a day it'll be finished, with me feeling like I've overdone it.

I'll patiently wait till my pre-ordered copy finally arrives (like 3 weeks after the rest of you already got your book). I 'll then read it that same day, if i'm not working. Then go on the forum, post a couple of posts about it, then reread the interesting, intriguing parts.

Step. Away. From. The. Malteasers. HB.

I've pre-ordered ADwD from my local branch of Waterstones. Whether I'll be able to get down there on the day is another matter. (I'm assuming the book will be in-store from the 12th.)

I've pre-ordered from amazon and will have the book on the day it's released.

I might see if i can pick it up at the local distribution center before it gets onto a truck, but I doubt that can happen, so I'll bring a chair down to the end of my driveway and patiently wait for the UPS guy, who better not be late that day.

My wife will be away, so the only obligation i will have will be to take care of the cats, water the plants, eat, sleep, etc. I'm going to read non-stop until I'm done, then do a leisurely re-read. i expect that it will take me no more than 3 days to finish, maybe less.

i won't go near the internet until I'm done. Spoilers lurk in unlikely places.

There may well be tumbleweeds blowing through the GRRM subforum on the Chrons for a little while on and after the 12th.

(Now back to ACoK....)

I will camp outside of Barnes and Noble for 72 hours to make sure I'm the first customer on July 12. Then I will race out to my car where I'll have a cooler of Gatorade and five pounds of unshelled, presoaked, salted sunflower seeds. I'll read until 8:30pm or whenever it's too dark to continue reading. Then I'll race home and read in bed until I finish. Then I'll sleep. Then I'll wake up and start my reread. I'm not joking.

Then I'll post here.

True Southron, Welcome! Here's a link to GRRM's official site where you can see all the cover art for this series. As you can see, the series has undergone numerous artistic directions and changes over it's fifteen years. I believe the only way to get a complete matching set will be to wait until the publication of the last book because I'm not sure they'll stick to the current art for the next two books.

Also, you can see there there have been at least five US hardcovers, four UK hardcovers, and two Spanish hardcovers for A Game of Thrones.

This forum will certainly make it easier to wait for Book Six.
This is absolute gospel truth, brother. These forums help me...so much.

Hopefully I'll pick it up within a couple of days of the release. In my youth, when Feast was released - all those years ago - I was a much faster reader, and actually got back here first to start the discussion thread. I can all but guarantee that won't happen again, so I'll avoid this part of the forum until I'm done, which may take up to a week or so. As I have moderatorly duties to attend to, however, I won't be able to avoid this place altogether, so a word of warning - anybody who posts a spoiler in a thread title that pops up in my new posts feed, pack your bags, 'cause you'll be taking a permanent vacation...

I'm going to read it upside down!

I probably won't rush to buy it though. Still gotta reread the others first!

Just popping back in to

Welcome True Southron! Sounds like your one of us!

I felt like (still do) that I had found my long lost family when I found this place!

I'm lucky to be living in Seattle at the moment, right near some Amazon distribution centers. I will probably hear the UPS guy clomp up the decking and lay the book on my front doormat on the 12th (Amazon prime, pre-ordered). We have an understanding. He knocks and then leaves, with packages left hopefully dry under the eaves, and not too many pine needles to dust off.

I read fairly slowly and savour the process. I wouldn't check into the chrons till I'm done. I may go to the gym in the mornings, to be fit for reading.

A reading menu--never thought of that! However, I have "Big Radish" status (I think that is so funny) with Amazon Fresh, which means I can have snacks delivered, too. Maybe I can get my husband to read AGOT, so that he has something to do. But he will probably play a computer game, since he has time off.

This will be a very big hardcover. I expect it to end up well read, like Storm of Swords--in two separate pieces, at least. One day I will buy a pristine set.

Okay, no spoilers in the headers!!! Done.:) Looking forward to everyone's take on the Dance.

Good to hear. However I can't shake the feeling that I'm going to come in on the thirteenth and see a post called, 'Wow, I can't believe Martin killed off _________, ___________, __________ and __________!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

Haha! I'm going to get a thumb massage beforehand to limber up.

Good to hear. However I can't shake the feeling that I'm going to come in on the thirteenth and see a post called, 'Wow, I can't believe Martin killed off _________, ___________, __________ and __________!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
This is how bad I am at avoiding spoilers: I just highlighted those blank spaces to see who got killed off.

And they'll be out in the open, in the New Posts list. :(

Shame we can't have the GRRM subforum locked for a few days....

(I'd suggest putting a (super)moderator who's not at all interested in ASoIaF on title-renaming watch, but is there one? Is it even possible for there to be such a person?)

I plan on going down to Waterstones as soon as it opens. I will then get back on the bus and start reading. Depending on the page count I'm hoping to have it finished by 4 or 5 that evening. Being a fast reader has it's perks, then I will re-read the following day. Early retirement has it's benefits. That's what I did for Deathly Hallows, actually I started reading that about 10 and stopped for lunch and I finished it about 4.

I'm off on holiday to Africa that week, so will be starting on the plane. From then on the plan is to spend the days sight seeing and going on safari, going out in the evenings and reading ADWD before bedtime :D.
