How will you read ADWD?

First, welcome True Southron to the Forum. We (mostly) play nice.

I will be on holidays at the cottage but plan a special trip into town on July 12th, then retreating back to the lake and reading it with a case of cold beer.

Thanks to all of you who posted welcome messages. I'm still on an intensive forum tour, basically learning a lot about ASOIAF that I did not pick up in my only reading. The trivia thread is great!

I don't see any threads discussing whether it bothers anyone that the story is getting "too magical". I love(d) the low magic feeling of the setting and therefore despise characters like Melissandre "deactivating" Renly's massive army with a spell... or even Dany: the image of her receiving tribute in one of the cities, semi-naked with the dragons' tails wrapped around her legs brought up memories of cheesy erotic fantasy art.

I know I'm committing the sin of derailing the thread, but one thing I picked up during my "forum tour" was that I can sort of get away with it until I have something like 18 posts. The reason I'm doing it is that I don't know whether the topic is worth a thread in itself. If it is, and if it hasn't been discussed before, we can discuss it elsewhere... just a couple of opinions on this and then someone say "Please let's get back on topic!!"

Ill be reading it SLOWLY!

On my re-read of AFFC I realized how much I missed the first time around. There is a TON of stuff going on in that book I didnt pick up on the first time

The topic of the ammount of magic used used has never been raised here, at least not in a specific thread (although I might not remember every thread on every page). I's a good topic and I'd suggest starting that thread as soon as your post count allows you to.

I would like Roy Detrice to read it for me while i sit back and listen to the story with my drink of preference and some green stuff rolled up (for medicinal purposes;)) in the ash tray. I will more than likely look on Audible.com and see if it has been released on july 12th. Otherwise, i will make my journey to the neighborhood bookstores and pick it up and proceed accordingly. I've gotten used to listening to the books on my iphone so that will be my first choice, even though i will pick up the hardcover anyway.

Within the next couple of days i will probably put my vacation in for the 13th - 15th of July to ensure that i have an extended weekend to complete and re-read.

I'm going to read it as any other book, I suppose? Maybe I'll read it upside down so that I get to hallucinate.

There is a thread on magic that I am trying to locate. Search monkey is currently out picking fleas.

OffTopic:

I will never understand how some of you guys can finish books of this size so quickly. I mean, really? A day?

I'm very jealous.

If this seriously takes you a day, the amount of reading you get done in a year must be ridiculous.

OnTopic:

I'll be picking up the book on the release date at my local bookstore. I will get there early and bring my coffee. I will read as much as I can for the entire day (< 25% I'm sure). I will try and finish as soon as possible. It will probably take me at least a week.

I read about 10-12 books a week sometimes. I read the complete Dark Tower series in 6 days. It gets to be a pain sometimes as I run out of books. The people where I used to work wanted to know where I learnt speed reading, but I've always read like this. I thought everybody did till one day at school the entire class was given 'The Secret Garden' to read. The next day I took it back because I had finished it and the teacher couldn't believe it. I had to take a quiz on the darn thing.

And they'll be out in the open, in the New Posts list. :(

Shame we can't have the GRRM subforum locked for a few days....

(I'd suggest putting a (super)moderator who's not at all interested in ASoIaF on title-renaming watch, but is there one? Is it even possible for there to be such a person?)

No, not even remotely possible. :p Perhaps if someone feels the need to come start a thread, they could title it 'Events in Dany's 2nd chapter' or some such. I think I will have to avoid the internet and this forum altogether; Imp is right, spoilers lurk everywhere!

I'm rereading that now as well, and I know exactly what you mean! If I can control myself, I will try to read a little slower with ADWD in order to pay more attention.

I'll probably head down to waterstones and pick it up as soon as possible. I'll attempt to read it non-stop and hopefully I should finish it within a day or 2. (Then comes the slower re-read to catch anything I missed) :)

Well I add any new books to my too read pile and then read them when I get around to them, which can be anything from days to years (honest).

However in the case of a few authors, I slip them in as soon as I get them and read them close to straight away.

GRRM obviously fits into that category so I'll try to have finished whatever I am reading before hand in time for the release and then start at once.

My speed reading days are behind me, I seemed to be missing so much, I'd rather read it slowly, and relish every word and page, even though it'll probably take me a week or three to read.

I also preordered mine. I recently reread the first 3 books and saved Feast for Crows to reread along with ADWD (since the timing overlaps). I did that with the Malazan books and found it very useful to get the full impact of the story line.

I have purchased it for my Kindle, and it will be waiting for me on release day when I open the sucker up.

Don't think I'll read it right away however. I'm currently doing a re-read in anticipation, but life has kind of gotten in the way and I'm only halfway into Clash. It will be hard to not start in on it straight away though.

I was thinking of this as well. Do you think GRRM (or someone else perhaps) will provide a suggested reading order for the chapters in AFFC and ADWD? I also would like to read them concurrently, as they were meant to be.

First time round, I'll be reading the book quickly because I'll be desperate to know what happens. Then I'll let three or four weeks go by to absorb it, and to discuss plot lines extensively with like-minded folks! After that, I'll pick it up again and re-read it more slowly this time, picking up all the bits I missed first time round!

Lady of Winterfell, that sounds like an interesting idea, but it may not be possible until the series is completely finished. I believe GRRM said he took some chapters out of ADwD and shunted them into the next book The Winds of Winter, so I suppose it's not impossible that some of the events at the start of Winds of Winter could overlap with the end of Feast for Crows. It may not work out like that, but I don't think you could have a definitive timeline for a while yet. (Unless someone more knowledgeable than I can correct me on this?)

You can read according to POV.
That way their won't be any problems with the timeline.

Careful about the headers! If someone referred to Brienne IV or Davos III, well...But then, I don't know which POV's are in the Dance.

Doesn't everyone workout so that they don't get neck, back, wrist and thumb soreness when they do a marathon read?!! Helps with button masher games, too!:) Swimming and free weights, not just for kids anymore.
