HmmThanks everyone, more good ideas.
I especially like Alchemist's suggestion. Might be interesting, although not necessarily those particular words, since part two would be even more freezing than part one
But gives me some ideas, I'll have to think about it for a bit.
Good news though, that by deciding to cut the book in two, it means I'm just about done with the first book - only technicalities and some improvements to the first half to go - and I'll already have the second half mostly done by the time I start submitting the first book. I'm liking this idea of marketing it as YA.
Well if he was looking for science-eeeeyIf you're wanting it to have a sciencsy feel then you could go for: First and Second Experiment/Test/Theory/Paradigm/etc. In fact you could pick any word appropriate to your story.

Great news!
I made a similar call (changing a series from 3 volumes of 3 sections each (9 sections total) to 4 volumes of 2 sections each (8 sections total)) recently and it's an awesome feeling to realise it means you're ahead in a weird way (for example I was only half way through the second volume, now both the first and second volume are complete!).
On the down side, I have to come up with a name for volume 3 (the old volume 3 name goes to volume 4) and I am stumped!
Yes, those cursed names... always the hardest thing to think up. That's why I'm cheating
At least tentatively. I'm also thinking about calling book one: A Breath of Frost, and book two can have the A Touch of Ice name.
I quite like that. I like my titles to evoke the mood of the book, but also to reflect the primary philosophical idea I'm exploring. For example the second volume is "Ripples In The Pond", which relates to ideas about chaos theory which I explore in that volume. The idea of ripples on a pond also evokes the idea of the the initial drops of rain on a body of water, as the first edges of a storm approaches.
I've decided to call the first one A Touch of Ice - Awakening and the second one A Touch of Ice - Revival
I think awakening and revival are too close in meaning. It would have more impact if the two names were opposites, or suggested some story by themselves (as "rise" and "fall" do, for example).
