Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

I thought Perp's was a great story!

Woops, didn't realise I neglected to title mine. Oh well, something to remember for next time

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Percival and Highlander - thank you for the mentions. It is still a rare enough event that it hasn't lost its novelty for me, unlike The Judge, Boneman, Cul, Chris et al., who, by now, must surely be getting bored by the honourable mentions. "Yeah, yeah, I know, my story was loved by all. Get on with it, will you?"

As for my own voting, I'm afraid I have yet to even read all the entries. I prefer not reading them until after I post, so as to avoid being 'influenced'; so now I have to read all of them, let them simmer for a bit, try (and fail) to understand them, then pick one out of a hat and call it a day.

An arduous process.

Not at all, I can assure you - every mention and shortlist is still greatly appreciated. Of course it may be different for the others on your list - I haven't been able to snare a key to the Winner's Clubroom just yet, unlike them...

And speaking of honourable mentions and shortlists - many thanks to those who've so far pegged my little last-minute story this month! And even more thanks to Flugel Meister for the vote!

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Well, I've voted now. It almost came down to sticking a pin in a piece of paper with the names on. There are some Honourable Mentions.

The Spurring Platty: Technology versus Magic
Grizzgreen 711:
not just behind the scenes, but under the very skin - I liked that interpretation
Perpetual Man: an omnipotent and invisible Macchiavelli figure
chrispenycate: a poetic discourse on our being the pawns of goblins (at least that was what I took from it)
The Dusty Zebra; the exploits of a filthy unicorn - that one's going to stay witn me for a long time
Hex: woodworm, so small, so dangerous - it's always the little things that get you
The Judge; Asimovian not just in title, but in wit - there is not much higher praise

In the end, I voted for Sid Hawkins, but it was a close run thing.

To those not mentioned, please forgive me. There were many more good entries. Too many to list them all.

Thanks Abernovo - my first ever vote!

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

The end of the day and a few more quick thanks, to Varangian, Nixie and to Gary.

(It's so much better now we can see who voted!)

Not had this many votes in an age, and it's great. On a day that has, to say the least, been hard it's a definite silver lining, thank you again.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Great spread of votes so far, someone's finger slipped because even I got one :D Thanks for that!

My Honourable Mentions go to The Spurring Platty, The TomG, Aun Doorback, Reiver33, Moonbat, Hex and Mith

But increasing his lead is Perpetual Man, Great story.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

At the end of a busy Sunday it's been nice to contemplate the fact that I have 2 votes! Thanks ever so much to Starbeast and Anyakimlin.

My own voting will have to wait until tomorrow. I love Mondays! ----- You know, A Parson's day off.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Tough as always.

Ok, my shortlist and shorter list

Harebrain - Puppeteer
Spurring Platty - Irreverence
Sid Hanwkings - The Watchmakers
Alchemist - Mars Inc
Anne Martin - They
MtzGr - Fun with Chemistry
Perp - Faceless
Phyrebrat - Dustmen
Decostal1228 - Terraforming of a different kind
Aun Doorback - From the Writings of Dr Spandex
Highlander - The Power
Reiver33 - Tracking, with close ups
Mike1366 - Below the arena
Ursa Major - Ol' Ethan
The Dusty Zebra - Unbridled Lust
Devil's Advocate - This title is a place holder
Boneman - The Returnee
Hex - Wood Worm
Mith - The Hidden Knife
Teresa - Not all fairytales end happily
Culhwch - An uncharted island in the Indian Ocean c.1932

Just a few comments.
I was very amused to see that when looking at the votes cast Ursa's entry's title has autolinked to an amazon page selling flasks for holding Ethanol (it seems the autolink feature is clever enough to work out Ursa's pun even if we aren't!!!) ;)

As with voting, my technique is to read through all the stories and if I like one I note it down with a comment, usually I say it if is ok/good/v good and then I see how many v goods I have and I then go through them to find the best one.

At this point I take grammar/spelling and theme adherence into account.

Not to be critical but I really liked 'From the writings of Dr Spandex' though when I checked I noticed Aun had missed off an apostrophe so the vote went elsewhere (sorry Aun :( )

Oh, my vote went to Dusty Zebra for the raucous, raunchy, romantic unicorn tale.

I assure you, with the opposition on this site, honourable mentions are every bit as appreciated by me, too! And I'm sure Cul, you're going to enter the clubroom soon. I win inaugural challenges and rest on my laurels after that...

Moonbat, thanks for the very short listing, greatly appreciated, and good to be in the company of all the others on your list. Contrary to expectation, I always think so many stories are better than mine, so it's good to get on the medals table, even if I'm in bronze or silver position.:)

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Big big thanks to Boneman and Sid Hawkins for the votes! :D
Slightly smaller Big thanks to those who shortlisted my story, and to all who enjoyed it, I'm glad it entertained you for a few moments. :)

There were a lot of good stories this month again, as usual, but also quite a few I didn't understand at all.

In the end the ones that really stuck with me were Perpetual man's and TDZ's - and well, TDZ's was just so much clearer within the genre (and it had a horny unicorn!) that I could not not vote for it.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Thnaks for the mentions, alchemist and Moonbat. :)

(it seems the autolink feature is clever enough to work out Ursa's pun even if we aren't!!!) ;)
It's enough to drive one to drink....

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

TDZ gets my vote as well. Excellent, well crafted and pure fantasy.

It's stories like TDZ's that I find impossible to write myself, ideas like that just never occur to me. :(

I feel just the same about yours! :)

Thanks for the vote and kind words, mosaix, along with Chel and Moonbat, and mentions, Starbeast and Highlander. You guys know how to make my day!

Wahay! A short listing!! :D - Thanks for that Moonbat. It brought a smile to my cheeks! Didn't think it was going to happen this time!

OK - down to the hard part - choosing a final vote. From the dozen or so I mentioned earlier, I could choose any one of them but I eventually whittled it down to a final three. They are:- (drum roll.......)

High Eight
TDZ
Culhwch

and the vote will go to (another drum roll.....)

TDZ - wonderful tale - I enjoy it more each time I read it!

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Hey 2 mentions this month! One spelling my name wrong and the other critising my poor grammer (Who is very ill you know!) - Oh the perils of cosmic spiders and a comprehensive 'education'?'' - Infamy, infamy - They've all got it infamy - ;-)

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Hey thanks for being on one of the longer short lists -- Boneman you're great !!
