Redemption guaranteed

ACCOST HARVEST STOP REDEMPTION GUARANTEED STOP BEWARE DECEPTION STOP

The greatest con artist since Old Nick should never have gone to Heaven, but there it was in black and white.

We approached the pearly gates wearing the usual grey robes. I was tired, and he offered to carry my sickle. Peter let him through and sent me to Hell.

Someday, I'm going to teach Peter modern punctuation.

Accost, harvest, stop redemption. Guaranteed stop. Beware deception.

The Horse Breeder

I raised the finest warhorses in Créas, bred for stalwart knights and wealthy nobles. Raising the quick messenger horses however was not my forte.

Five other breeders were present, their own riders set to carry their prized stallions to victory; jabs and snickers threatening to hold me back. Four losses preceded me; my honor was on the line.

One. Last. Time.

The flag dropped and six horses sprinted forward. This day, I would not lose.

I blame the parents.

Don't be angry. I never meant him to get hurt.

I know he's littler than me but, my brother, he follows me everywhere.

I should never have shadowed the pixies, but can't always be watching beer and fag stinking Cartoon Network.

And the playground's closed since they found the needles, streets aren't safe for kids…

They caught him peeking – what could I do?

Look, I've poked my eye out too; does that make it better?

A Tale Told Beneath a Thorn Tree

Saoul shattered the Mountain Where Gods Are Born, wanting no god but himself.

But the mountain had brought rain. The land withered. All tongues cursed Saoul’s name, until deathly silence fell.

Saoul was god, alone, of wind and dust.

Understanding, he wept.

He rebuilt the mountain: stronger. Making it unbreakable, he broke himself. With dying breath, he placed the capstone.

Rain returned, heavier. Gods were born, brighter. Life sprang more abundant, thanks to dead Saoul.

Forgiven.

The Princess Pythia had confirmed he’d be forgiven when he completed twelve challenges. The sin of murdering his wife and family would torture him no more and he would gain immortality!

This was the final task!

In front of him stood Cerberus, the massive three headed dog. All he had to do was capture it alive, using no weapons!

ALL!

Heracles stepped out, clutching his lion skin cloak closer to his chest, and marched forward.

Trading Standards

“By the terms of contract you cannot refuse me this!” cried the man.

“In the eyes of the law your claim is valid,” agreed the trading standards mage. “Redemption of voucher entitles holdee to any colour unicorn of choice.”

The stable master protested wearily. “But transparent unicorns don't exist.”

The mage shrugged. “Mere detail. Under the terms of Fair Trade And Voucher Redemption I hereby revoke your right to live.”

Twice Redeemed

The letter said her brother was dead, killed in the orc wars. He had been a bully, selfish and cruel, she would not miss him. Her parents left them nothing but a pendant for her, which he stole to buy weapons and armour.

He bequeathed to her a pouch of gold and a paper slip, this she surrendered at a Pawn Shop and received not only her amulet, but a note that read simply: "Sorry."

Diving and diving deeper into the abyss. As I fell I felt the cold chill of guilt about me. Right and wrong became meaningless and I became an animal wandering unsurmounted territory and acting like an enraged monkey. As I fell deeper and deeper into the abyss, at the very bottom, a light shown out of it. A light of redemption, realization, and retribution. I got sober.

A Widow's Grievance

"Who will come with me?" She said as she spurred her horse onward.

Solemn faces stared, remembering the methodical way she had taken her fallen husband's bloodied blade, armor and clothes; remembering her unashamed nakedness as she disrobed and used her stained dress as a pall; remembering her don her husband's grit-filled gear with tears; most of all they stared because a widow dared to chase after the honor stolen by cowards.

Some followed.

Through the eyes of the Redeemer

His redemption was swift, yet cruel.

(He rode the lightning)

He killed his brother. He deserved it.

(He rode the lightning)

His brother was a womanizer and a fiend.

(His brother swallowed the business end of a butcher knife)

And so he deserved to die?

(His brother rode the butcher knife)

Yes, in His eyes, he deserved it.

(He rode the lightning)

So he deserves redeeming?

Depends on who’s eyes your looking through.

Aftermath

Fifteen years after the war, Egrepia and Cendeia were united.

Karrick returned to duty upon hearing a garrison was being built in Birchvale village, where he had conquered and celebrated his last battle.

He recognised the girl, a grown woman now, whose teenage son had Karrick's eyes.

It wasn't much of an apology, but at least he was able to give the boy a job and some training at the garrison.

Exodus

Today I leave a dying Earth, lucky enough to afford the price.

Most of those left behind will die.

What do I care, I’ve always looked after number one.

As I passed those to poor or to old to merit saving. My eyes scanned the crowd; savouring their terror and misery. Then I saw the youth, a picture of innocence, his face serene.

I handed him my pass and turned and joined the doomed.

I know

You think me unaware but I know.

I felt it tonight in the fury of your lovemaking. I hear it now in the sobs that trickle from your restive sleep.

I know you never meant to open the Hellgate. I know what you plan today to seal it – your sacrifice, the soul of one good person.

And I know, my love, that I will walk through that gate before you wake.

Survival of the Fittest

A swollen mass of open flesh and blood.

My face.

Harman laying senseless in the sand.

By my hand.

My only friend overcome, for my chance of freedom.

The only one who'd protected me when I'd been thrown into the pit.

I'd won the Golden Tournament.

I could leave the prison. He would remain.

"Name?" demanded the Emporer's man.

"Harman," I replied.

Redemption's climb is steepest when the good you do is soiled with shame.

Sic Transit Rex Mundi

My friend says winter comes early this year; he dreamt of a big rock, dark skies and snow-covered flowers. He says we must go deep with much food.

He's an unusual friend, big thunder lizard, and his parents ate mine, but he speaks only kindness to me.

Now we gather to go underground; he cheerily says he will see me when the sun returns, but his eyes are sad.

I will miss my big friend.

-Your Spirit Is Worth It's Weight In Gold-

"Take me with you!" the child had cried.

A city fell.

Dramork, shadow knight, strove on 3 circlings of the suns to his lord. His tale told to no avail. No help will he send.

And as the suns danced across the sky again, a certain witch watched them and pondered her good fortune...

To shape shift a waif was such an easy spell, especially in trade for the heart of a shadow knight.

Rescue the Perishing

The candlelight flickers
as I work on my tome.
There are those who’d claim
I’m avoiding my home.

Much truth in that;
I’m more than afraid.
A harpy lives there,
So I’ve bills to be paid.

She snatches my food
And steals from my life
My family is captive
Including my wife.

Their rescue will come
In a well turned phrase
A publishers smile
And a book that pays.

The Building Builder

When I was lost I found the builder.

I couldn’t understand why he would spend months hauling stone and timber to build a bridge so many miles from water. It seemed pointless. Who he was building it for?

It was years before I stopped running, before I realised what I had lost. It wasn’t until I found my way home to build my own bridge that I understood.

Death of a Captain

Sixty-eight days out. I heard the voice again last night and this time I cannot refuse. I must pay the piper.

I made my confession to the first mate and now I stand on the rail with my hands and feet tied. I refused a blindfold – I want to look my death in the eye. And now I see him coming. A huge wave is building on the horizon, sweeping down on our ship.........
