A Question Of Guilt.

“You have murdered an innocent. Confess! The runes don’t lie.”

She faced him with difficulty, her bare neck cold on the block.

“Mage, with my dying breath, I say I am falsely accused.”

The blade sighed. A fan of blood.

He staggered back. He’d seen only truth in her eyes; her death would stain his soul. How to redeem himself?

He pondered and then turned with a sly smile. “Axeman, you have murdered an innocent…”

Son of Empire

Once, I thought myself irredeemable.

As a young man, I courted glory.

Fearless in battle, I impressed my superiors and rose quickly. Soon enough I stood at the right hand of the most powerful man in the world. From that vantage, I watched atrocities. Committed atrocities.

As an old man, I tire of the sight of blood.

Spells and dark sorcery shield his twisted soul, but I must try.

That can be my only redemption.

A Cautionary Tail

I must’ve done a bad thing. I don’t know what. But she left me.

I’m alone, scared.

I see lights. Hear strange voices speaking words I don’t understand. They seem gentle, until they cage me.

Days pass. People come to look. Shaking their heads, they leave . . . . Don’t go!

Suddenly a voice! Her voice! I stand, excited.

She runs over. ‘Oh Max! I thought we’d lost you! Daft dog’

Relief floods my soul. I am saved.

King's Stroll at Midnight

He was far from the palace, his Will delivered to the commoners’ burghs.
From a roof, he glimpsed the streets his subjects built. Were they really so grey?
His daughter was here while the strike raged. When it dissolved, too.
How was he to know she loved that boy?
As he fell, he knew he ruled no world, no matter how they cheered.
They clove his world down on the strike's last day.

Defective Goods

“No! Down there.”

“For Customer Services?”

What?”

“I want a new-for-old replacement.”

“Impossible.”

“Omnipotence...?”

“Okay. So why should we?”

“Product Not Fit For Purpose.”

“Why?”

“Literally irredeemable.”

“But you know you were wrong.”

Now I do. Replacement, please.”

“Too late.”

“How’d he qualify? He’s a murderer.”

“At the end, he believed.”

“So did I.”

“In the wrong things.”

“I was made this way.”

“Er...?”

“Replacement, please. But not ‘Schicklgruber’ this time, St Peter.”

REDEEMED BY LOVE

“Condemned to sail the seas eternally, the ghost ship never rests.”

She yawned at the mariner’s tale.

“But once a decade the captain may seek a loving heart.”

She soon forgot.

“Only sacrifice will save him.”

*

She loved the tormented stranger at first sight. At their wedding, the mariner appeared.

She remembered.

“My life for yours,” she told her husband.

He took her knife and pierced his own heart. “My love,” he said. “My sacrifice.”

The Queue Jumper.

I looked at the thing.

"What's that?"

It's an indulgence, I bought it on G-Bay. I have a receipt and everything," he replied.

"And?"

"It guarantees me immediate entrance"

"Yes it does." I said, indicating the far door.

Nick met him at the threshold, he was bored, business had been slow of late. Most people were grateful for the long wait before their appointment.

The screams seemed to last for eternity.
