A thought about Game of Thrones on TV

Anyone else think that they should have left out Daenerys entirely and had her sections as dvd extras? Characters in the kingdom(s) could have simply mentioned her as it is, and we would have had a lot more screen time with characters that actually have bearing on the story we're watching. Then she could be introduced in season 3, perhaps. Easily done, and then season 1 wouldn't have felt so rushed given that she hasn't any actual bearing on the main storylines until later. Thoughts?

I'm honestly confused by the thought, and I mean no disrespect.

Dany's existence is the reason for the majority of the political machinations within Game, written or televised.

Drogo's declaration of reclaiming the Iron Throne for his unborn son is one of the most awesome things. Again either in televised or written form.

Dany waking from his pyre with a trio of dragons is a truly seminal moment within the story. Written or televised.

I can definitely see where Dubrech is coming from, by the end of reading the first book, little dragon babies or not, I felt like Dany could have been left out and replaced with more of the characters and storylines that were interesting.

The interesting thing about Dany's story from aGoT is that GRRM won a Hugo)?) award for the Dany chapters as a standalone novella.

I think that understanding Dany's maturation priocess is important for understanding later events. I wouldn't have wanted to see the books published in any other way, and I'd especially object to leaving Dany's early story out entirely, so, I'd veto the idea.

Heh, having read Game of Thrones like 10 years ago, I can tell you that I found Dany to be one of the most interesting storylines in that book. Hell, personally I'd have cut out Bran's ridiculously awful and boring chapters. "But, his being thrown from the tower started the entire story!", they cried. Yeah, we could easily hear about him falling in someone else's POV and then learn the truth about it in a Cersei or Jaime POV later on.

The point is you could probably cut out any character that you don't find interesting and find a way to tell the important parts of their story in other "more interesting" POVs. But it doesn't work that way. I think it's best to just accept that you'll like some POVs more than others and trust that GRRM is writing the POVs he's writing for a reason.

I am in agreement with Wiggum, The Imp and ViZion on this although I admit I have not seen the TV program so perhaps would feel differently if I had but I doubt it. The story line and the character development work for me.

IMO Dany's stroyline worked as well in the series as it did in the book. Drogo's fiery speech about taking the iron throne was one of the greatest moments in TV history that I can remember.

Total agreement. Dany's story (despite it's dragging in aDWD) is really a key part of the entire series. My only problem with her in the TV series was adjusting my thinking from the proud kaleesi we came to know back to the scared girl we first meet in aGOT!

Drogo's speech was a shining moment for TV IMHO! One of my TV watching partners (who does not know the story) was very upset that he got such a great scene just before we lost him!

Take some of my posts with a grain of salt.

I read Game in 1998 while dealing with a long, and unintended layover in O'Hare.

Been a huge fan ever since.

The idea of taking Dany's story line out just doesn't make television sense.

I may be male, but I like romance and love.

I think they're both worthy topics of entertainment, and they're found within Dany and Drogo. It comes later with Jon and Ygritte, but you have to have that component to make a tale worth telling.

Drogo actually came to life for me within the series. A lot of us have agreed that his speech about taking the Iron Throne and the duel with his blood rider were two of the best moments of the show.

I would never want Game to not have Dany and Drogo as a central figures.

It just wouldn't work.

I love the Lannisters and Starks as much as anyone, but they make for bleak storytelling if left on their own.

As I've mentioned before to notable silence from the rest of the forum, I downloaded bitTorrent and then used that to download the episodes and watched them on my laptop.

The only advice I would give anyone going the bitTorrent route would be to click "No" or "Do not install" for all of the helpful little software and toolbars that the bitTorrent website will offer to install along with the bitTorrent downloader.

Dany's world adds an exotic element to the Europeanesque Seven Kingdoms. I personally thoroughly enjoyed every scene with the Dothrakis, and leaving such a massive character and her evolution out in the first season and then suddenly introduce her in the next would confuse the hell out of people.

It isn't as if the later seasons are going to be any simpler, in terms of plot complexity, than the first, so when exactly would Dany have appeared if she'd been omitted from Season One?
