Um the reason why the focus on the prism is emphasized is that this is what jumps him into the visions.
We do learn a lot more very soon about how its effecting him but this chapter is really setting the antagonist and her callousness in a fairly casual manner - hers is a subtle horror quite feminine in its application and builds slowly in the book unveiling as it goes on.
Oh and never just invite only cul, the more the merrier!
