The green, green grass of home.
"Pick a colour"
"Green"
"Why Green?"
"It reminds me of my youth", said grandpa.
“What’s it like?”
Grandpa sighed and produced a dog-eared photograph. His grandson had never seen trees or fields, none of the children had. The boy studied it blankly. When the seatbelt light came on, grandpa checked the boy was secure. The last voyage from earth was about to depart and where they were headed the boy would soon learn about green.

The Computer is your friend

He stared in panic down the red corridor at the green door.

"Computer, I don't have red clearance!"

"CORRECT. 20 SECONDS REMAINING TILL GREEN BRIEFING OR DISINTEGRATION."

"But the red corridor?"

"RED CORRIDOR BREACH WILL RESULT IN DISINTEGRATION. 15."

"Raise security level!"

"RED SECURITY TO BE GRANTED AT GREEN BRIEFING. 10"

"Please?"

"TEMPORARY RED GRANTED. THE COMPUTER IS YOUR FRIEND. 5"

He dashed down the corridor, yanked open the door and exploded.

"GREEN SECURITY BREACH."

Greetings???

‘They communicate using colour? Are you sure?’
‘Yes and we’re testing that assumption now.’
‘How will you do that?’
‘We use robots that look just like them.’

# # #

‘Are you sure that was a greeting?’
‘I think so. They’re responding to our signals and they’ve never done that before.’
‘That’s so pretty, just like a flickering rainbow.’
‘Look! They’re circling.’

# # #

‘Yeah, another one please, how many robots are left now?’

Remembrance

A jasmine, black as space - from Jupiter, where she danced the night with Dad.

A blue delphinium; for earth, for her boldness, for her exploration through space.

A Martian sand-drop for love; red, rust-red.

A white venus-flower for my birth; a yellow Saturn-bell for yours.

We lay her galaxy of flowers, and release her body into space; free-spinning flowers the pattern of our mother’s life.

We’ll Always Have Kansas

The picture window framed a family at lunch. I recognised myself but not the woman and child. Arming a shaped monochromatic charge I hurled it against the glass, shielding my eyes against the flash.

Everyone died.

I didn’t stay to gloat as the prismatic vortex would reopen in under an hour.

I’m Hugo Red Fuller. So far I’ve killed Orange, Green and Blue. I can’t rest until I’m unique amongst the seven universes.

Could you?

Many names but only one…

God touched his creations crown - violet filled him with love.

Allah saw indigo in his mind and gave him intuition.

Brahma turned the sky blue – the child could talk.

Buddha shed green tears of happiness - the boy would love.

Shang Ti impressed his solar plexus with yellow - wisdom manifests.

Hayyi signed him with orange - creativity filled his body.

Kami blessed his genitalia with red – he would procreate.

Adam’s Chakras were complete…

One last breath

He drifted in space as the last drop of power faded.

Trails of colourful light moved around in the darkness, like fish in the ocean.

They danced around each other, and as they slowed an image began to form.

Sparkling in magnificent colours before him was a beautiful mermaid. Striking red hair, bright blue eyes and a silky green tail.

He should be out of air, but he didn't care; her smile was so intoxicating.

Handwavium! Handwavium! The Crystals for your Engine-um!

"I say, old chap. Is that a rainbow?"

"What-ho, Smithkins, I believe it is."

"Race you?"

"With our handwavium crystal engines we'll be there in no time!"

"Loser buys the gin!"

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!

"I say! Look at the colours!"

"Quite dizzying, old boy! Ah! There's the gold at the bottom of the rainbow!"

"Just let me ajunctivate my hyper-woojit. And... dive!"

VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

"Unimagined riches! And all thanks to Science!"

"Hurrah for handwavium!"

Joseph’s Coat

The exquisite wracking pain with each beat of my wings brings psychedelic hallucinations: spiralling, pulsing, throbbing, ecstatic.

No above, no below. Just me, in air.

Each feather, grafted to superlight polymer resin struts; these, in turn, screwed through tissue into hollowed bone. Eighteen painful months of self-restructuring; my splendid feathered Joseph’s Coat is complete.

“Simplify, and add lightness” was my aero-biomechanical mantra, and it worked! Being half-elf, I was lightly-built to begin with.

Saved

My toe traced elaborate patterns in the parched earth.

“Tlaloc to Gunga Din, Over”

“Receiving, Over”

“Operational in one minute. Ensure the collection devices are in place, Over and Out”

Streams of ethereal energies poured from the device tethered high in the atmosphere.

Agonising moments staring at a hazy sky.

Then, it gradually faded into view.

Red. Orange. Yellow. Green. Blue. Indigo. Violet.

It worked.

A single tear hit my shoe milliseconds before the torrent.

A New Era Dawns in Hyperbole City

"Finally! Our costumes have arrived from Andre's House of Heroes outfitters.

"Time for Team Spectrum to take on Castrato and... Craven? Craven, come back here. Okay, no need for the coin toss. Bananagirl, you get yellow. Catch.

"Angst... blue. Oh bloody hell; stop blubbering. Your life is not ruined, just because it's cerulean.

"You always envied Castrato's outfit, so here; green. Hey... what's that smell, and why are you wearing a gas mask, Traitor Boy?"

Secondary – Class Citizen

The Blue fist came down again.

“Stop it!” The Jade girl cried her Orange tears.

“Quiet!” Blue bully turned, he had menacing Red eyes “Or you’ll get some too, you….”

As Emerald boys Magenta blood flowed from swollen Teal lips, he prayed to the Spectrum.

The Blue fist kept pounding away.

“No!” Jade girl yelled. “Why? We are the same, don’t you see?”

“We are NOT the same! I’m pure. You’re……. Mixed!”

Estd 1759

The rosy-cheeked leprechauns guide the chrono-ship to its sylvan base.

‘Sure that was hard work!’

‘Indeed it was! Taking the whole country back four hundred years before the trouble started!’

‘Aye, before the striped flag of orange and green, and white peace just a no-man’s zone between.’

‘What now?’

‘A pint of the black stuff!’

‘That sounds great, so it does. But wait! When did they invent the black stuff?’

‘Oh feck!’

I Can See Infra-Red, And Be Ultra-Violent

Dying pixels dripped from the Command Centre monitors, spattering like blood across the bladed, goggle-eyed helmet of Doctor Arcane.

His colourful monologue revealed his world-domination plans to his minions.

He fired his disintegrator at thin air. In the light of a burning rainbow, the corpse of an invisible super hero fell to pieces beside the air conditioning vent.

‘Stupid heroes,’ he sneered. ‘Why do I have air conditioning vents in my Antarctic base?’

Clarke's 3rd Law

The star fell from heaven into the sea and a figure rose from the boiling waters, clad in gold. For a while he looked upon this village, until a chariot appeared over him, and he vanished into blue light, to return to the heavens.

"Since then, our village has been blessed by the gods," the priest told the children. "And this is their symbol."

He held up a green star for all to see.

Detective Roy G Biv vs the Rainbow Gang
#######################################

The most colorful criminals had united but he swore to catch them.

Using chromatic investigation each one was arrested.

Red robbers restrained.

Orange arsonists doused.
Yellow journalists silenced.
Green jealous crimes averted.
Blue burglars busted.
Indigo embezzlers detained.
Violet crime countered.

It was all too easy.

Outside the holding cell the copper informed the kaleidoscopic gang of their fate.

"Don't say it!" begged the defeated crime spectrum.

"That's right!" He gloated, "You've all been im-prismed!"

A Minimum Of Reason

Emerald hues to the skin on her cheeks marked her as different from the rest.

“F3 Scarinai?”

“F2. My mother’s side, Sir.”

“Law says I gotta accept you cross-breed telepath freaks as part of my crew. I ain’t happy on that score.”

“No, Sir.”

“You wear make-up, you cover up, an’ you don’t go thinkin’ you can do any of that mental crap here. Understood?”

Turquoise eyes burned into his own. “Yes, Sir!”

All the colours of the rainbow.

Once a boy saw rainbow colours, above red and below violet.

These have names: Microwave, infrared, ultraviolet. Soon he saw thousands of them.

The flickering of i-phones. Radio waves from deep space denied him sleep.

He faded. Awareness, memory; the colours melted them.

“We want Chris back,” daddy said.

Mummy cried.

*

Now I am twenty. Red is the feel of my lovers lips, yellow the warm sun, blue the taste of cool water....

Memories of the Blind

Green- scent of growing things we planted together.
Raspberry- sun warmed, and juicy, off the vine.
Aqua- soft sea spray when we swam with dolphins.
Navy- cool metal medallions that marked your service.
Dartmouth- wind in your hair when your chariot whistled you to the finish.
Mahogany- smooth wood of the box of treasures carefully kept at the foot of your bed.
Amber- warm beaded necklace you gave me at my birth.

Love you Grandma.
