The Meaning of Colour

Ella stopped her floating mobi-chair at the table. The holo-screen lit up, displaying her art book.

Her finger cycled through the palette. ‘We learnt about colours today, Mamma. Red for courage, pink for love, green for life, purple for magic.’

She stopped at the last colour. ‘What is black for?’

‘Black is for death,’ her mother said.

Ella frowned and looked at her mother. Her breath frosted. ‘Is that why Papa wears black?’

As I stood amidst the bodies, my comrades picked through their spoils and our alchemist healed the injured fallen.

My sword dripped red, my mind a purple haze of panic and adrenaline.

Lord Marcus came forth, addressing us. “If anyone needs to relieve themselves, now’s the time. We march in five!”

I found a bush and dropped my pants. My underwear was a combination of yellow and brown.

“Commander, I believe I’m good to go!”

The New Arrivals

Vesper awoke to what seemed to be a normal day on planet Thyattica. The first sun had crested the horizon. Thyattica shook with unnatural thunder. A star blazed a reddish trail across the sky.

Vesper, the blessing’s sentry, followed the star. Stars normally remain in the sky. His curiosity led him to a silver object opening.

Vesper ran back to the blessing yelling, “What kind of creature has hair only on top?”

All to pot

“Lincoln has been razed.”

Professor Black nodded and sank into his chair.

God almighty, what had they done? Genetically engineered: the Kniphofia and the Antirrhinum, such an innocent mix. Or so he’d thought.

The blue of the Kniphofia was spectacular – the lilac Antirrhinum, magnificent.

“Norwich’s gone, Professor. We must leave.”

The Professor rubbed a hand across his brow. “Hell, Gregor. How do we stop them? Thousands of tiny yellow dragons with red hot poker flame.”

Greyscale

The crystal tree loomed over me, fracturing the sunlight into a thousand hues. I stared in awe and reached for a branch. As I touched it, I could hear the colours of the wind, blowing through the crystal leaves. I ran back home, giddy and laughing.

“What’s he on?” mom asked, looking worriedly at dad.

“Sheriff says he tested positive for colour. He’s scheduled for greyscale detox in the morning.”

My mother’s tears were blue.

Magical Effects on Water Quality

With both hands, I lowered my staff and sent a pulse of red magic into the water. The lake flashed a purple hue, and I could see dead fish starting to litter the surface.

“What the hell?” I wondered, my nose catching a whiff of rotten eggs.

Mr. Nally, my preceptor, yanked the staff away.

“But the alg..”

“You idiot,” Mr. Nally interrupted, “blue-green algae absorbs red magic; increasing toxicity, not killing it.”

When the colour dies...

Neon lights. So bright, so warm. I liked them. So pretty, I had to keep the darkness away.

They'd told me, Mum and Dad. They did. They said they'd come when the colours died.

Flash, Crackle one has gone.

"Hisss." They're coming.

Only two left, green and blue. Won't be long now, I can hear them now.

" Please." I whimper, clinging to Gomez.

The green one died next. Leaving blue, I like blue. I squeeze him tight, the blue was dying.

I sob into Gomez' head as blue drops me into darkness. They come now.

Chromatic Fusion

Energy levels are very low, he thought, I’ve only got one shotat this.

He made one last tweak to his calculations, held his breathand hit the button to engage the chromatic fusion engine.

A wormhole immediately sprouted in front of his tiny ship. Its outer edges were a wild mix of vibrantcolors that lightened and blended as they approached the white inner core.

And so interstellar travel began with many bright colors.

Victory

‘God-President, your solar spectrum reconfigurator fleet awaits your command.’

‘All colour will be removed? All tone but bright white and black made indistinguishable grey?’

‘Yes. But Sir, surely —’

He raised his hand. The Space Minister’s head exploded brains and blood.

‘You?’ he asked the Chancellor. ‘Any doubts?’

‘None, Sir.’

He opened his desk drawer, and beheld the ancient device that had defeated his powers for so long.

‘Soon,’ he told the Rubik’s Cube. ‘Soon …’

Flags

Will we eat today or will some of us die? Ever since we returned to the world of man with their strange machines they have ruled our lives.

Today we march not knowing what we will find, will it be food or death for some?

I see our destination, the cloth is yellow. Today we eat but tomorrow may be different. Our lives determined by coloured cloth.

Magic vs. Technology-And The Final Results

The wizards were at fault. Everyone knew technology was the way forward. Everything they could do, we could.

Or so we thought. From the spaceship I stared down at the planet that was once blue and green and full of life.

Those morons had turned everything heliotrope. Including our sun, and in doing so, had not sealed our doom, but theirs.

So who’s on top now, you purple idiots?

Bad As Dad

Dad is bad. He has lots of cool weapons. He has gutrippers and housebusters and sparkthrowers and firebelchers.

He has red ones and blue ones and yellow ones and green ones.

Dad didn’t used to be bad. He used to be glad. Then Dad got bitten by a hate vampire, a creature of the new world mythology. Ever since then Dad became mad.

Watch out for Dad! He’s bad. And he’s coming to get you.

The Color of a Fairy Tale

“Is that rouge or do I make you blush ?” The dashing prince asked the visiting courtier.

“It might be a mix of both, sir. I have always been green with envy of your many conquests.” The yellow haired beauty replied.

“Well, let us have a picnic. We can drink White wine, eat oranges and watch bluebirds.”

The robot set down the fairy tale book. He didn’t understand the references. He saw only grey.

Land of the Gigantic Hemiptera

It flew towards them, eyes twitching excitedly. It’s mouthpart quivered in anticipation of fresh blood.

'Watch!' He yelled. 'These bugs detect us through ultraviolet light, but my magic has created an impossible colour!’

He cast a shower of dust at the approaching insect.

'I don't see any colours?’ His queen retorted.

‘Not to us, but a new black has made me invisible.’

The bug carried him off.

‘Next!' She cried, scampering behind a tree.

Swear Route of Pie

The old Venusian Wizard raised an eyebrow as a very irate Corporal Jenks entered the control room, and began screaming profanities at no-one in particular.

“Corporal, that's quite enough,” he said firmly. “I will not tolerate such colourful language on-board my vessel.”

Jenks bowed his head, embarrassed. “I'm sorry, Sir. It's … Well … We're three million light years from home, and I've just realised I've left the oven on. The Wife's going to kill me, Sir.”

BUCKET LIST
1. A REAL GUNFIGHT

Lightening over Boot Hill reveals a purple sky, on the street two gunfighters trade insults.

"Go home to your Ma, you're still wet behind the ears."
"And you're a yella dog, " the Kid shouts.
"Come back when you cut loose of Mama's apron-strings."
"You're yella Ringo, DRAW!"

Guns blaze and both men fall dead.
They look to be smiling as they are carried to the undertaker.

Over-night, more lightening, and the bodies vanish.

Intercept from Venusian News Cast transmission - 3434-6

...pandemonium today at the Intergalactic Weapons Contest as Team Triton were unable to display their Infra-red particle beam. Organisers said the team, hotly tipped for the coveted title, had been struck down by a mystery stomach bug.

Team Ganymede also failed to demonstrate their Ultraviolet Torpedo, after being rendered mute by an, as yet, unidentified virus.

Luckily, reserve team v00d00, placated spectators and took first prize, by displaying the latest in Noirmagus Doll technology.

Cold Steel (or 'Slipping Standards')

Our silver army marches forth
Metallic bodies gleaming
To crush our foes beneath our heels
But without any feeling

You see our makers did decide
When we were brought to being
To give us brains but leave out hearts
So killing had no meaning

So we will bleed and shed our oil
Beneath our country's flag
And care not what we're fighting for
It's just a coloured rag

Blinded by Life

She lived in shadow, without sight
Unable to communicate.
No knowledge of colour.
A world of her own.
Damaged.

Yet, the little witch within,
Had the power to make me see
With renewed vision.

Her smile like sunshine rays,
Eyes glowing like midnight fireflies,
Lips like cherries,
Enticing.

Her vitality, overflowing,
Her innocence, pure and simple,
Her inextinguishable love.

And when she cast her spell,
I fell.
Enchanted; utterly and completely
Releasing me from darkness.
