It can be a gorgeous geek girl in glasses and a lab coat...oops! Sorry, wrong kind of Fantasy.

From Wikipedia -- "...science fantasy gives a scientific veneer of realism to things that simply could not happen in the real world under any circumstances. Another interpretation is that science fiction does not permit the existence of fantasy or supernatural elements; science fantasy does."

So, super heroes, vampires with sparkly ray guns, urban werewolves marking their territory after a night of drinking down at the local pub, etc.

Jeez! I go and produce a reasonable, good, cute story. Allow myself to think I might get more votes this time, maybe even close in on 1st. Fantasize about having a chance to win?

But no! All these excellent other stories just keep on coming.
So I have to say....

It's an honor being here with you all. Thanks.

Some great stories again this month. Struggled a bit with mine, and once again am not sure it matches the conditions properly. I think the set up and pay off are suitably unrealistic though. *shrug*

Lethal Weapon 3!

Okay, I cheated. I thought it was the toilet scene in LW2 (the best one) but I googled and found it was 3. Yes, excellent story, MT. It gave me a good giggle.

Or you could just go with Warhammer 40,000 as the general definition of science fantasy.

Really? That's what you're going with? I mean, it IS an example of the genre, but not the best thing to ever come out.

Star Wars, I think, is now being more generally accepted as Science Fantasy rather than hard science fiction, and I tend to agree with that sentiment. The Jedi and Sith, essentially, are psions, after all.

Grr. Days after posting my entry I receive another idea; better, I think, or at least more compact and thus requiring less trimming to fit in the space.

Anybody really short of an idea as the closing moment approaches?

No, I suppose I'll just post it after the voting's done.

Or you could save it for the next challenge (the next challenge is How Do I Make Last Month's Idea Fit This Month's Theme?)

No, the challenge is supposed to be generating an idea and pruning it down until it fits within word limitations, not how to recycle old material (although that could be a worthwhile challenge in its own right, it is more aimed at pulp writers than the sometimes over-creative set we've got here). A theme like that would probably merit a stream of consciousness, first person present POV, a frustrated author failing to understand what he didn't comprehend, ever decreasing spirals…

Well I managed not to read any of the previous entries before I posted, so I hope my entry's not too similar to any others - if so, many apologies! I had to trawl the titles, to ensure I hadn't plagiarised...

Buffy season 4. (Think X files meets Charmed.)
It was actually the worst season of the show and yes, the genera was somewhat to blame.

I get the impression the genre (and to a certain extent the subject) are fairly loose, but that most people will probably be put off voting for a great story if it is too far removed from the subject/genre

I try to vote for stories that I think have weaved the subject in an interesting and unusual way into a good solid scarf that they've then twisted round their poor chosen victim's neck!.... erm

I struggled again this month to write something that wasn't so vague and nebulous and overly trying to be subtle as to just make people confused what was going on
