The Hobbit could become a Trilogy

Agreed as well. Making The Hobbit a Middle Earth epic is potentially hazardous territory. I hope the story of Bilbo, Thorin and crowd doesn't get lost, or perhaps minimized, in the transition.

I read the Hobbit when I was a kid (I didn't read LotR til I was an adult, and after I'd seen the films) and I didn't like it but I was looking forward to the film. Now that I know it's going to be three films? Kinda not so much.

Hmm.. how does one take a book written (very obvious in it's reading) for children that is 1/3rd the size of the first LOTR book and turn it into a trilogy whilst all three LOTR books were turned into a trilogy.. ???

I enjoyed reading the Hobbit when I was a teenager, but if I picked it up now as a 28 year old, I probably wouldn't be able to finish it.

I understand Peter Jackson took material from LOTR appendices, but this could possibly lead the new movies to be slow paced and not as exciting as our beloved LOTR. Two movies should have been just fine. And maybe down the road turn the two books into an extended addition with the extra footage.

While I agree, Utlendr, that stretching out The Hobbit to three films is probably daft, I have to disagree about reading The Hobbit. I'm 42 and I've read The Hobbit several times over my life and I've enjoyed it each time.

I've no idea what 'extras' Jackson is putting into this trilogy, but I'd love to see a Moria as described to Frodo in LOTR, with all of the brightly lit halls full of dwarven folk going about their daily lives. That would be really special for me.

As much as I am looking forward to The Hobbit, I just cannot see three films to tell the story being justified. I was satisfied with the original two that were planned; a healthy adaptation of the book with the required bit of fluff and padding, but three leaves me with concerns that there will be superfluous moments/scenes that will be a detriment to the story rather than an augmentation.

•The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will open on December 14th, 2012.
•The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will open December 13th, 2013.
•The Hobbit: There and Back Again will open July 18th, 2014.

Here's hoping I don't get hit by the proverbial bus between December 14th, 2012 and July 18th, 2014...or between now and July 2014 would be handy, too. :(

The bus should at least wait until you've watched the movies before killing you.

I'd go never if I had a choice of when to get hit by a bus.

Unfortunately life can be inconvenient at times and likes to hit you up with little surprises...like buses, but if nothing else I am an optimist so I'll live in hope that my derrière will be snugged on a cinema seat on July 18th, 2014. :D

Perhaps Jackson is worried that always releasing a film in the same month every year would be... er... hobbit-forming.

(And I agree: four hobbit films would be going to far.)

Who you all kidding? You got one week to see Part 1 of The Hobbit before the world ends on the 21st anyway! Parts 2&3 in the hereafter.

You could always move to a city that has no buses until the trilogy concludes. ;)

I'm seeing Hollywood moneygrubbing occurring with this title. until HP7 I don't think I've ever seen a book-to-movie adaptation be split. of course now that THAT genie is out of its bottle, here we go, the three part installment of The Hobbit. I think I won't have to worry about the end 12/21/12 or whenever. I'll be content to watch my Rankin & Bass Hobbit.

This monster I'm sure will be like I, Robot, some passing resemblance to some stuff in there, but overall, a flash and dash endeavor that's going to have most kids who've read the book wondering where all this stuff came from etc...

Yeah, the Trilogy put on screen was awesome, and had most of the relevant points left in, some scrambled, and some things mutated a bit, but it was still part of an epic trilogy. stretching a children's book, into three movies? we'll be able to see through the tattered remains I swear.

maybe its going to be that long because all the songs are left in.

hay does anyone else remember those "Disney sing a long" videos? i used to sing and dance to them all day long when I was a tyke. maybe they'll do a Hobbit Sing-a-Long video, follow the hopping foot, all that jazz.
