I'm in Luxor desperately trying to edit down mine before the deadline (on my iPad), but in between temples, restaurants and wine I'm not so sure I'm going to make it. It's coming up to 10pm which makes it 8pm in Blighty.... touchscreen editing is hell on toast!

Thanks Perp, that's exactly what I was trying to do with my story. You are very insightful!

Er... *desperately trying to remember if stuffed tigers appear in the story*

Not recently, she says, playing for time. Do they have a strip where Calvin is shoved under a stove, then? Or is it the wanting to kill aliens bit?

(Actually, I wish I had put a stuffed tiger in there -- might have livened it up a bit.)

EDIT: I love the fact I'm getting ads for boots and hotter shoes on the Challenge thread!

45 entries already with time to go and the promise of more entries to come?

Epic stuff!

Clocks have gone back, so i am still up.:) and i read them all earlier and found a shortlist incredibly hard.

I liked grinnel's really original take on it.
I loved the stark beauty of Reiver's, the sense of a closing, deadly world.
Kylara's un pc dragons made me smile.
Hex's russian folklore made me shiver.
Chrispy's i found rather lovely, a sense of making the most and celebrating life in dystopia.
Harebrain's, i have to be honest i didn't get first time, tonight i loved it.
Cul, and the ew factor!
And i loved TDZ's poetic warning

Very hard, but i went for grinnel, reiver and tdz. :)

"Black Jack's Night"
by Stormcrow

Disturbingly delightful, such an evil pair. Great tune too.

"Peat's Dragon"
by The Spurring Platty

A monster lurking in a cat, diabolically cool. I like the talisman idea.

"Memories Cards Are Made of This"
by Ursa Major

Excellent sci-fi tale, a dark conversation between two robots. I love it.

Thank you very much for the mentions, springs and Starbeast.

I have a looong short list and five absolute-favourite-must-vote-for stories. Where's that pin?

My shortlist:

Starbeast – if there’s one thing I enjoy, it’s a humorous Cthulhu story...with fish and chips...wait, that two things! Or maybe three!

Karn – slay a dragon, steal his treasure...become a dragon...

Kylara – the dragons remember the good old days of bite-sized humans.

The Spurring Platty – for the smallest, furriest dragon in this challenge.

Hex – and once again, magic comes back to bite you.

TacticalLoco – light on speculative fiction, but very tasty all the same.

Alchemist – be careful what you wish for, you might just get it...back from the grave.

Boneman – and the vampires shall inherit the earth.

Paranoid Marvin – unless the werewolves beat them to it.

Ursa Major – or the robots beat us all to death with their ray puns.

And the votes go to...Starbeast, Karn, and the Spurring Platty.

And narrowing down the stories into a shortlist, and then the three to vote for, wasn't easy.

*pulls faces at all those talented people making life so difficult*

It sounded so like it... a kid so completely engrossed, and a dark edge to it!
