Didn't enter this month - christmas shooping, post china throat,(antibiotics that don't allow alcohol!!!!) a lot of critiquing to do, and the fact that I couldn't get an even half-decent idea!! Will be refreshing to vote, though...

Looking forward to perusing all the stories in detail over the next few days, with a glass of port and a bowl of garlic cloves.

Chip and dip here. But that could be catastrophic for the laptop, so I got in early.

Shortlist
Karn
reiver33
Abernovo
Interversus
DthenB
Phyrebrat
The Judge

And the extra spicy mince pie goes to...
reiver33

And thanks for the mention, springs.

Merry Christmas to you all!

StilLearning – I had to laugh at this one, it might have been a straightforward story, but it was so well told, the main character had such a good voice that it was a bit of Christmas magic. And how clever is it to end with a line that is both sinister and amusing!

Aun – Another clever twist on the theme, here though we see a different side to the bloodsuckers, where they seem to follow strictures of the season, giving it respect and curbing their appetite accordingly. A well told story and a great idea.

Kylara – Vampire dragons! I mean vampire dragons! There is a whole universe waiting to be explored there, especially dragons that can change form to boot. There is an undercurrent of humour as well which makes it all the more entertaining. The last line is just about perfect. (I really like the idea of them trying to catch Santa too!)

Cul – In a world where everything has gone, where the population seems to mostly have been converted to vampires, there is still a sign of hope. Life continues as best it can, even interaction between loved ones, no matter what undead divide. I like the idea of still celebrating Christmas, interlaced with a thought that comes across as casually normal about what trees make the best stakes. Another excellent entry.

Ursa – The confusion between St. Nick and Old Nick is a small one apparently. One wrong word and everything changes. Not for the better. The payoff turning Santa into something sinister that has made his Faustian deal and has to live with it. The line about the chimneys is an absolute classic and turns them into something sinister.

PM – As I have come to expect a totally wonderful poem. It is also one of the ones that is not dark at all rather full of all the fun of a party. How great is that vampires and humans getting on together in the spirit of the season? The end of the truce is inevitable, but all the fun before hand is worth it. I need not comment on how well constructed the poem is. (Or I just did!)

Stephen4444 – Another spectacular story and even this ate in the day it is original too. It really caught my attention, an epic story in its own right, and it is amazing at how much was squeezed into so few words. Angels as elves as vampires is clever enough, their jealousy of man takes it to another level, but the final twist that Santa protecting the Christ child get him the reward of those creatures as helpers is brilliant.

TJ – And Panto just manages to squeeze itself into the challenge (Oh no it doesn’t – oh yes it does!). The idea is a clever and once again different one, and is done well, but what deserves the biggest tip of the hat is the fact that we got a description of what all the characters are, for those who might not know pantomime without distracting from the story, in fact becoming part of it.

Straight into a double post (possible that someone might post while I'm typing).

Where to begin: Thanks to Glen and Springs for the shortlistings. There were so much excellence this month that getting a mention or too was what I was hoping for.

So it's an early Christmas present that I got a vote. Many thanks AMB.

As for my vote, well the excellence this month made my head hurt trying to narrow it down to a shortlist. Everyone did a superlative job and is to be considered to be on my shortlist.

In the end there was one that really stood out for me (just) and that was Parson, the vote goes to him by a split hair.

Stephen4444, right at the end nearly overturned that, so an honourable mention to him.

Thanks for the listing/mentions Glen and alc.

For the first time I couldn't produce a short list, as there were just too many truly wonderful entries. In fact, my long list included pretty much everybody, before I ditched it as unusable. This month's topic and theme brought out the best in people's writing, it seems. So, well done, everyone.

Two entries spoke to me most, though: Aun's Father Vampire and reiver's Moscow 7.
By a hair's breadth, my vote went to reiver33.

Thanks for the shortlistings Springs and Alchemist (and anyone I might have missed as I've had to travel scan the website with my ipod the last few weeks), and merry thanks for the vote Warren_Paul.

Hoping to get time to read the others now I'm back in blighty and catching up on the Christmas spirit (Dad's mincepies cooling as I type!)

So glad I gave a smile to you, and I look forward to all your stories also.

Here's my short list and vote. For a theme I didn't think I would like, this month has been very surprising.
Nice job and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Mentions...
The Dusty Zebra - Excellent twisted Magi.
reiver33 - You caputured the vampire psyche perfectly.
Hex - You scare me sometimes.
The spurring Platty - Laugh out funny. Even at the rereading.
The Judge - Lucky I'm a hopeless Anglophile.

Winner...
Teresa Edgerton - Top notch storytelling with interesting characters, narration and great surprise ending.

Perp --- What a nice surprise on Christmas eve!! A vote, by the man who probably knows more about all the stories than anyone else. Thanks!!:):)

My short list if it can be called that...

Hex, Springs, PM, Mosaix, HB, Phyrebrat and TacticalLoco.
Perp got my vote, which might be a result of him doing reviews, and reviews, and reviews... Anyway I enjoyed it and as I was 2nd voting for you, I'm not alone.

It was a good theme this month. I enjoyed it.

Merry Christmas everyone, Santa is on his way so I'm hiding behind the Christmas tree to mug him. So if he doesn't make it to yours tonight, you've not been naughty - I HAVE...

Parson - I'm not sure I know more about all the stories, I'm just good at winging it :)

As for your story it was a pleasure. Like all the stories this month it was a genuine pleasure to read, it resonated, well they all resonated, but yours resonated just a little bit more.

Bowler - thank you, a second early present. A good way to end the day!

Thanks for the short listing, TacticalLoco!

This is my very first post from my Christmas present, my new iPad!

Tough as always! I came down to this short list - Lucky Lola, Parson, Teresa and Stephen444. There were a lot of humorous entries, but I like things that hit me with emotion so those with a funny slant didn't click with me, just personal taste.

In the end, Parson's won my vote, as the message was so powerful and well-delivered. There are none so damned that cannot be saved, and not because of themselves and their efforts, but because of the power of the Saviour transcends all. So Parson got my vote, thank you for writing that piece Parson.

Others I liked - I did like Scott's word art, with the cross embedded in the text through color, that was a nice touch!
