Being Polite

Any suggestions as to the best threads to follow on this site?

Hello :) you might want to do a "formal" introduction in that section. But I'll come in with my opinions on where a good place to start is. Here in GW is a good place to get a feel for personalities, the Lounge is a great place to relax. Playrooms for being silly (and gauging senses of humor). Then I would head over to Critiques, you'll have a better feel for who you are critiquing and what they will be looking for.
GR is also a good place to get a feel for what people like to read about (something authors should have an understanding of yes?)

The Challenges are my favorite *glowy smile*

Re:Chris~ I like that when you do a critique you do the grammar and punctuation for more than just the piece being submitted. I'll admit it caught me off guard the first time I noticed it, but it really made me stop and think. There is so much more to communicating via the written word than just the choice of words used. Punctuation is the intonation of the written word. I have tried to implement that knowledge into my 'everyday' posting, and while it still looks the same to me when I read it over. I'm more confident that what I meant to say will be more easily understood with proper capitalizings and marks.

In other words, I'm relying on you to be yourself.

Any suggestions as to the best threads to follow on this site? I think I have to post 30 times (critiques?) before I can post a story. Is that correct?
Hi, Bonnie. You need 30 posts (not necessarily critiques, but giving crits to put back is always welcome) before you can put a piece up for critiquing. Not all posts get included in your post count - the playrooms, for example, don't, as they're just there for having fun and a laugh with other members. But 30 posts is a point easily reached, especially if you join in.

As to threads, there's an Introductions section, as Hope states, down near the bottom of the main page (in the General Forums), if you want to tell us about yourself and your interests. There is the monthly 75 Word Challenge, here in General Writing. You're thinking of putting something up for a crit, so presumably you're a writer. This month's challenge is still open.

At the top of the main page, there's the books forum, full of good discussion on fiction, including which books people are reading at present and how they're liking them. I've had several profitable recommendations from this site.

Anyway, that's enough suggestions for now. Look around, join in the conversations. It's a friendly bunch, from all over, with varied backgrounds and tastes. And, welcome to the Chrons. :)

Hey, Thanks, Guys!
I hadn't even spotted most of the threads y'all have suggested. Will most definitely check 'em out. I should probably start with the introduction thread, so I'll do my best to head over there later today.
What's already knocked my socks off is the variety of countries listed - BULGARIA, Abernovo? - and the marvelously erudite responses. Are you all ex-pats? If not, I'm doing one deep, sincere kow tow to the various European school systems! You ROCK, y'all! (Can y'all tell mah daddy was from Texas?)

Bonnie -- here's the main index of all the various sub-fora http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/ A bit of the way down you'll see the sub-heading of Aspiring Writers which is where all the real action is! General Writing Discussion has the most threads which are all general and in the main how/why/what questions and the like; Critiques is where those with over 30 counted posts can put work up for evisceration... er... dissection... er... help ;); workshop has various exercises where anyone can put up a paragraph or two; and Writing Challenges has the monthly and quarterly short story contests, again open to everyone -- check out the latest here http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/538795-75-word-writing-challenge-december-2012-read-first.html with a discussion thread where we waffle here http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/foru...-december-2012-75-word-writing-challenge.html

I like to present a revised edition, even if it doesn't need any more critiquing done. I do this to show the people who contributed to helping me how much their comments improved my work. And because I like to share. It makes me happy when people enjoy reading what I post up, but I want them to truly enjoy it, and a flawed version won't do that. I want them to enjoy reading the best version of the scene I can write.

I try to do this myself and I hope that this is being seen by my critics. I love the ability to post up for a critique, and I hope people will continue to give up their time.
