Discussion -- 300 Word Challenge #8

this is going to be fun, it'll be my first attempt at the 300 word challenge but I can't pass up such a brilliant photo.

I like the picture as a work of art / as a photograph.

However, it's not really ambiguous enough to make for a wide range of interpretations. A picture is worth 1000 words? You can pretty much summarize this picture as "Foreboding skies, shipwreck on a beach"

Having said that, I've got a cool idea that I'm hoping with a bit more sculpting I can shape into something unique and unexpected for the reader, and I'm sure many others are right now thinking of angles that I'd never dream of

The idea isn't really to interpret the picture, but take inspiration from it. Sometimes the link between picture and story is almost invisible.

I think the fact is quite generic makes it even more of a challenge. I have one down, a rough version that I'll polish it in a day or two, and I don't think anyone else will have the same idea. They might, but I doubt it. No two people ever come up with the same.

James, you only have to be 'inspired' by the picture. One word, for me, that springs to mind is skeleton. There are loads of others. :)

Indeed. There is a LOT that can be done with this picture, shipwreck or no. The old derelict does indeed help a lot, especially if anyone goes down the supernatural route, but I'm seeing some good possibilities. Even better than last time.

My thoughts exactly. This image in black and white is very dramatic looking to me, upon seeing it the first time, my creative fuel powered engines fired up, and rev like a muscle car.

Oh dear, what have I started?

Just to explain myself, it looks like a deep fat fryer, a shopping trolley, a colander, a fruit basket, one of those blue crates you put veg in...

Maybe I just really like food.

LOL, you're cracking me up. Hmm, ah! My noodles are done. (fetches hot & spicy noodles) Nom nom nom nom nom nom nom.

I agree, there's a great deal of writng talent here. I enjoy being amazed by how we all see something different in a picture challenge.

I'm going to stare at that photo for a while, listen to ambient music and just let my mind drift.

And yes, I really did eat noodles.

Agree with all who've said it so far - what a great image! Nice skyscape.

Can't begin to imagine what variety of ideas this will trigger...am also still just enjoying....well, looking really!

But there is more to the picture than the ship (striking as it is) and the foreboding sky. When I look at the image I see wet sand, sea, and storm clouds, and I might be inspired to write a story about any of these to the exclusion of the rest ... or I might focus on the ship, I don't know at this point. We will probably see a number of stories about ship wrecks, but they'll all be as different as the people who write them.

The reason we have the ten day waiting period is so that people who usually race to be one of the first ones to post will have a chance to reflect on various ideas (if they want to) and still have an opportunity to be among the first to post. And having a whole month to write our stories is good for those of us who like to spend time fussing over ... er, polishing ... our entries before we post them. At 300 words instead of 75, we may need that extra time.

...and there's bound to be a few rib-ticklers amongst the entries.

Hmm, yes, I'm definitely guilty of posting too fast... The 300 word challenge gives me that bit of forced patience, makes me think just that little bit harder about what I'm writing!

Usually, having the whole month for writing is useful for me because I need nearly all of that time to get an idea and make it work!

I have a completely different view on the photo the only thing I'm worried about is whether everyone will see what I see when the story is finished. It's a long shot and I hope it will be far from what everyone else will be writing about (I hope :)) but I think it'll be worth it. I guess only time will tell.

I had an idea after a day, mighty slow for me.

I have 326 words, and six days to edit in. It had been close to 400 so it's already been hacked back quite a bit. Nothing to do with food at all; I'm not sure about where that came from, but I'll keep a sharp eye out for Mouse's entry. :D

Oh dear, I have to come up with something now? I'm having chips for my tea later, maybe that'll help. ;)

I have written a version of my idea. Makes me want to expand on it. Have to edit it down to fit now
