Eastercon 2013

Silly question - are the panelists going to do short talks or presentations, or just Q&A most of the time?

Brian, panels are very much discussions: one person moderates (or tries to herd the cats), directing the conversation, attempting to keep things vaguely on topic, and ensuring each panelist has their say. Generally, at the end, things are then opened up to the audience for questions.

So, no presentations or short talks as such, except within the framework of the discussion. :)

I will be there Friday to Sunday doing my usual shtick of wandering in circles looking vaguely lost.

My obligatory blog about schedules is up tomorrow morning (3 panels plus one of the "fantasy get-togethers" aka mass signing).

All the details here: http://8squared2013.sched.org

@Brian: I have seen presentations at conventions, but usually that's explicit in the description - there's generally only one named participant and it says they're giving a talk. E.g. Mike Shevdon did a talk about archery at BristolCon, and Ramez Naam did one about human-computer interfaces (prosthetics, etc) at WorldCon.

All I know for certain is that Titan Books are throwing a launch party for the reissue of my novel A TASTE OF BLOOD WINE at 5pm on the Saturday.

You know what that means. FREE DRINKS!!!

Curses that I'm not going.

I loved A TASTE OF BLOOD WINE first time round (ahhh, Karl... and also ahh the wonderful Charlotte).

And free drinks? Always.

Free drinks guaranteed, Hex. On Friday at 5pm there's the PS Publishing launch (including my new short story collection Growing Pains) - free drinks for anybody who buys books - followed at 6.00pm by my own NewCon Press/Solaris Rising launch - free drinks for anyone there until the wine runs out! :)

I can't believe I'm missing so many free drinks. And people.

Sadly Bradford's far, far away from where I will be (in the frozen wastes of northern Scotland, sidling up to elderly fishermen and looking plaintive).

I won't be going, but a friend from the same writing group will be. If you meet a guy called Dave Weaver, buy his book, because he's a very good writer (I don't know whether he can weave, though).

Shame you won't be there, Toby. I haven't seen you in yonks!

Hmm... I've now been asked to take part on another panel, comparing the works of John Brunner and Arthur C Clarke: two writers I love, neither of whose work I've read in decades, so my knowledge is likely to be a little... rusty. Still, Edward James is on the panel, and Edward knows all there is to know about everything, so I'll just nod sagely when he makes a point.

Brunners a funny one- love his 'big four' award winners but some of his other work...

If it's on the Saturday/ Sunday I'll try and make this one... (Hmm, maybe I should take a look at the program already...)

Well, I'm at the Campanile no - who else is around? I'm in 214 or the bar - feel free to say hello. (I'm the one in the rockboots and possibly a rainbow jumper.) :)
