Life is Like a Box of Chocolates

I opened the box of chocolates Bryan gave me. Immediately they began selling themselves.

"Take me. I have a rich caramel center."

"I have a cherry inside."

"I can see you are a French crème kind of girl."

"You know you want me. Double chocolate fudge, baby."

I sighed and closed the box. "Living" food still creeped me out.

A muffled voice said, "Hey! You don't want me to get all spoiled now, do you?"

Virus

A low growl sounded in my throat. The roal branch I was perched on dipped slightly in the wind, trying to dislodge me.

Kill. Kill the one who did this to you.

My scarred hands gripped my knife.

Death. Blood.

He was under the branch.

"Death!" I hissed as I fell upon him. His throat opened with a spray of blood as I latched on.

Dirty.

I retched blood as another virus tore through me.

The Black Knight Is Invincible

A dark and stormy knight,
Armour black as sin,
Eyes glowing as if not flesh,
But blood-red coals.

The knight’s opponent raised,
His weapon archaic,
Sword that roared for flesh,
Teeth spinning along the blade.

Knight sliced man’s limbs off,
Nailed severed flesh to cybernetics,
Flesh would wither and die, again.
He would try again.

The combat ‘bot yearning to be,
Alive and human,
Since the falling comet,
Saw the Fall of Man.

Generically Manipulative Organisation
Ridiculous mouth swab – I'm company president; I employ, never personally commit crime.

Then, surprise; my lawyers inform me that my DNA has been patented. Sons, grandson, self; all must pay licence rights on it.

A thousand other fortunates are targeted, cases pursued in countries where bribed judges would be dismembered by peasants certain the registered gene sequences in their crops are deliberate contamination…

Big predators can be brought down by ants; that's life.

AMOEBA BOMB

I released it into the sewers.
My monstrous masterpiece, a lump of living repellance... could talk.
It knew ten thousand bad jokes.
It moved fast. They never could catch it, pin it down.
It surfaced only at night, randomly haunting urban neighborhoods.
A voice. Booming, penetrating.
Why is a fireplace like meeting the President?
A long echoing pause.
s a grate on 'er.
The city is deserted now. Paradise to a deaf beggar like me.

Life Lived Living

The First created the Ritual. The Second quickly joined him. They returned with incredible stories!

More followed, improving knowledge - we learnt to spot imperfections in the glass, how to design the bulbs to slow our sand’s fall… how to live longer.

We built vast halls and filled them with shelves and the hiss of time.

Today I seat my first hourglass, perform the Ritual, and join my people. Today, I begin life in the World.

Insanity.

Purple-grey circulatory collapse worked inwards from her limbs, towards her main organs.

I held the daughter she would never wake to meet against her.

Vain hope.

A new mother. Brave. Stubborn. Everything to fight for, and fight she did.

She died anyway.

*

This pathetic game our gods force us into…..answering just prayers with silence…..with inaction…..

I've spared us all from hope at least.

You see…tonight I released the nanites.

Bone piled shelves, rusty keys. A door plaque promising paradise. Fran glanced up the ossuary stairs. Sophie picked a key from a cobweb nest. It did not unlock paradise. She tried another. Fran left Sophie to her keys. Sophie slid each into the lock. Wept when one finally clicked. The door opened. Sunlight bounced from a willow pond.
“I have found heaven,” Sophie whispered.
“At last,” came Fran’s voice. “We have been waiting for you.”

“Detective Crews?”

He turned, drawing and aiming his gun in one smooth movement. Only his eyes betrayed any surprise and the pistol never wavered. “You’re glowing. Why is that?”

“I’m from the real world, Charlie. What you see is the realization field.”

His eyes narrowed. “The real world?”

“You’re a fictional character in a cancelled television series. But take my hand and you’ll know real life.”

Crews cocked his gun. “To know is to die.”

Photons Be Free

A spark.

Flashing lights, smells and smoke assault my senses.

The room is dark. I open my eyes.

Chaos everywhere.

Screams for comfort, screams of pain, screams for mercy.

I’m scared. What do they want from me? Why did they ask for me? Why do I even exist?

Wait… I exist? Who am I?

And then I feel my programming kick in.

“Please state the nature of the medical emergency.”

Solar Windsurfing or Cosmic Coincidences?

Far from her home in the Oort cloud, Ison burns effulgent in Earth’s November sky, her icy tail kicked backwards by heliospheric currents.

Asteroid DA14 swung close to Earth back in February, whilst meteors screamed over Yekaterinburg.

HARPS found super-earth in Pictor sometime in September last year, orbiting safe in a goldilocks zone some 42 light years distant.

Radio sweeping deeper and longer; seems someone’s riding the waves out there:

“Is that you Silver Surfer?”

A TOUCH OF GREEN

"Are you sure this will work?"

"Yes. Every technological species we have encountered requires an atmosphere as rich in carbon dioxide as our own. The artificial organisms I have created will convert such an environment into one dominated by oxygen."

"A frightening thought!"

"It would be a terrible weapon if used on a planet with sentient life. The test site we have selected contains only single-celled organisms."

"What do you call your invention?"

"Photosynthesis."

Scanning. Mark it N164. The camera goes through the motions. Close up. Macro. UV. Uploading and transmitted. The information propagated its way towards earth through the vacuum of space. One of hundreds and yet it stood alone. The rover continues on, wheels spinning towards its next destination. 14 more years to go on its radioisotope generator, hundreds more photos yet to take.
The photo arrives. The world quiets in awe. The tiniest dot.
Life.

All The Small Things

"Leave me. Follow the others."

"Get up. There's only nanoseconds before the next blast."

"We've been running for so long. Why won’t they leave us alone?"

"I don’t know, but I do know they can’t find us. Now, move!"

"But I'm so tired. You go on."

"I am not leaving you. Take my hand."

"So a world on the Intergalactic Tour was destroyed the other month..."
(Sung to the tune of "That's Life")

“That’s Life!”
“That’s what all you people say!”
Touring ‘round in a ship named April,
Fed lies of worlds lost in May.
Thought they could go and Mine their Moon,
But tour guides can’t change their route so soon.
“What’s Life?” then asked a voice pitched like a scream.
Some folks, heads thick as bricks,
With minds thin as steam.
Though uninformed, they’re not such clowns,
As those of a world that’s done spinning round.

The End

It was his time and he knew it.

Life had been good, he couldn’t complain, but now he knew this existence must end.

As though from afar, he could hear the last gasping painful breaths.

Fear: no pain he pleaded. His prayers unanswered, lungs on fire: he felt crushed.

What had he heard? Oh yes, don't go into the light. It appeared for him, there would be no choice.

Smack!

Whaaaaah! Whaaaah

"It's a boy"!

Forgotten Magic

Over the millennia our magic was lost. Our city still hidden from man but the concealment is ancient, the method forgotten. We integrated with man hiding our longevity. Now they have found us, traitors showed them the way. A weapon is needed, I remember my grandmother and things she told me, I gather the ingredients and cast the spell. The forest foliage comes to life. Slaughtering the invaders as they seek to learn our secrets.

No Going Back

I don't care how many started out.

I want to be first, but so many are ahead, my task seems hopeless. Some fall back, exhausted, and I swim over those slower than me. It's dark. I'm moving on instinct alone.

There's my goal ahead! Surrounded. I'm too late. I try anyway. I find a space and try to force my way in. Incredibly, something gives! I thrust my head into the ovum, exultant.

Life begins.

Milt Bank

Behind the reception desk, a pretty Merwoman smiled at him from beneath her horn-rimmed spectacles. A green light appeared above one of the doors and she said, “They will see you now. Would you like some reading material?”

“Thank you.” Her webbed hand grazed his as she handed him the tablet with the delectable naked merladies. He entered the perpetuation room just like his father had twenty years ago.

The Weapon

"You were supposed to create a biological weapon you idiot. Not a new life form."

"Don’t worry. It will destroy the target and eradicate all evidence as planned."

"No trace back to us?"

"Like it appeared out of thin air."

"Is it self-replicating?"

"Put two of these together and off they go."

"Excellent. What are you going to call it?"

"Hydrogen Ultimate Mass Absorbing Neurons."

"Too long, needs something shorter."

"I’ll work on it."
