Worlds Within Worlds

As the nomad pondered the night sky constellations a shower of bright, hot sparks burst from his crackling campfire.

Particles orbited the sparks and on one continents drifted, winds blew, rain fell and seas formed.

In these seas complex molecules combined, re-combined and emerged to live and die, to love and hate, to discover and make fire.

By one such fire a nomad pondered the night sky constellations and a shower of bright, hot sparks…

LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE

Me and paw was passin' the cemetary when we saw Deke Applewhite lookin' at the sky and shakin' his fist.
All his kin were dead. The only date missing on the family headstone was the date Deke would join them.
Looking up at the sky again Deke shouted, "Why won't You let me die?".
"Don't curse, it'll come soon enough," paw said
Then paw saw the headstone and turned pale.

The Titan

Driven by my obsession, defiance, hate.

I will spit in the face of the so called ‘god’ and I will endure whatever punishment he places upon me.

Fire ignites my heart, a star that will not die.

My hands gather cold clay; my fingers make good the forms.

My breath transcends oblivion; immortality engenders mortality: My first gift is life.

The second: flame.

From hatred comes love.

And that will see me through any torment.

I am many things. I am alive, for one, but you wouldn’t guess by just looking.

Cogito ergo sum? Hogwash. I don’t need to think. Bits don’t think.

Forget all your chauvinistic ideas about homeostasis and replication. Biology isn’t everything, you know. One or zero. On or off. Full digital.

When I was zero, I didn’t know anything else.

Now I’m better than just “I am.”

I am one.

New Life is a Myth

The midwife stared at the shape on the ultrasound screen.

‘Boy or girl?’

‘Neither, I’m afraid, Mrs Jones. You didn’t use the Hellenic Experimental Lab fertilisation programme, did you?

‘Yes, it was cheap. What do you mean “neither”?’

‘It’s a centaur. So instead of dirty nappies, you’ll be mucking out. It could be worse.’

‘That’s a minotaur and –’

A scream abruptly cut off.

Reading Departure Signs

Coming off his ship, Johnny stared in awe.

Gleaming white Escher-port, people everywhere going up, down, in, out -- thousands of ships, each simply named “Life.”

Grandpa, waiting. And Mom! Johnny sat, contented, enfolded in the loving light of Mother.

How do you know which ship is yours?” he asked Grandpa.

You will.”

The brightest ship of all appeared. Johnny ran, pulling Mom. He looked back.

Coming, Grandpa?”

Not this time, Johnny.”

Grandpa sat, waiting.

A Child for Van Diemen’s Land

Another girl needing my services. Young. Desperate.

A pregnant woman can’t be hanged. A good law. Good for me, certainly.

“Lie down,” I order.

Transportation awaits her. A harsh life. Better than the noose, though.

I finish quickly. She leaves, crying.

I pack the in-vitro equipment. I’ve thirty minutes till the jump to my present, her far future, but I’ve checked her DNA.

In nine months, my eight-times-great grandmother will be born.

To Be Frank

In a dark secluded lab
Laid out cold upon a slab
A creature lies bereft of breath
Long of limb yet short of death

A jigsaw man comprised of parts
From artist's hands to lover's heart
Yet he doth still lack the key
To draw him forth from limbo free

Constructed by my own two hands
From my dear old master's plans
I wait now for the coming storm
So my creation can be born

Life? No Bones About It...

Nebulous, I started
(Orbiting an icy sphere);
Terrified, I darted,
Across deep space from there to here.

Slowly, I was braking –
With a flourish, tail behind –
Earth sent me a greeting:
“Keep away!” Peace I’d not find.

Now I linger, friendless –
O’er a world that’s overgrown –
With a pain that’s endless;
I’m reconciled to live alone.

Then Earth’s message: “Kill them!”
Justice is what they expect.
Inspiration: Condemn
Mankind! Now their world is wrecked.

Life

By the time they ended my insurrection, I’d been responsible for the deaths of some four million people across thirteen sectors. A court of war sentenced me to life.

I wish it had been death.

Each morning they strap me in a chair, insert a neurojack into my temple. The collective grief of some four million families is fed straight into my brain for fourteen hours.

Tomorrow, they’ll do it again.

And again.

And again.
