Believe? Uncertainly!

‘By observing, science changes reality.’ Aldaric Many-Eyes spat the blasphemy through needle teeth, while chaining his creator to a sacrificial altar.

‘Only subatomic particles!’ cried Doctor Heisenberg uncertainly.

‘You think small.’

‘You’re just a monster in my role-playing game.’

‘Once. By playing, you believe, changing reality.’

‘On a macro level?’ Heisenberg’s eyes went all anime.

Heisenberg believed he was a hero. His spandex fist punched Aldaric straight through the walls of reality.

When You’re In A Hole…

The fair princess Crystal Drift, closely pursued by the poisonous Red Apple gang through London’s underground network, headed towards the safety of singing workmen.

The gang turned and fled, muttering “Queenie’ll be furious.” The workmen may have been vertically challenged but there were seven of them after all.

“You saved me! How can I ever repay you?” she asked.

The seven leered at each other. “Give us a second, I’m sure we’ll think of something…”

Hero at Large

Superhero wanted
Hurry there's no time
A super-villain's on the loose
About his life of crime

Spiderman or Scooby
Captain Caveman too
Our city needs a hero now
Anyone will do!

Another bank's been raided
The mayor is in a state
You'd better get here soon because
We're finished at this rate

Our city lies in ruins
It's people in a sulk
If ever you're in need of help
Do not ask The Hulk

Hero’s return

They took his medals; an act that changed Albert from an avuncular veteran into something very different.

A body will age, even one with a history of glorious and terrifying acts. However, some things remain hidden, incubating within. Forty years since his last unleashing the beast was awakened by a surge of hurt and confusion. Through the old mans eyes he watched the youths leaving, and felt his talons begin to emerge.

Tir gan teanga, Tir gan anam!

I could see the tall statue from the ship's deck, bursting through the mists. A beacon of welcome. Despite the grim circumstances, it was good to be back. We were needed again.

I readjusted my wings as I watched it grow closer.

In our absence madness overcame the nation. Demons passed through the land and gave everyone a different language. Now no one understood another.

The statue that once shouted liberty now screamed Babel.

Patrolgrunt

Ruddy snobs, zooming above cloud level.

Bank raids, hostages, yes, but you won't see them on traffic duty, or mopping up a goblin spill.

Now communities want to pay us less – as if fifty superbeings could control an entire planet. And the slightest hint of bribery, you're inside. Private security firms getting lots of coplications, but I joined the force to help everybody, not just the rich.

Collateral damage, and we're the collateral.

Pan-demon-ium

Harrow Copse, as dawn washed stars from the sky; you saw me in that magical greening-hour light. You thought you imagined me; your heart racing, your sap boiling.

I guided you through the deepest forest realms along secret spiralling paths and you became more than you were; you became wise.

Now, you see me on platforms and pavements; carrying that same blackthorn walking-stick.

Now, I dance in your garden while you sleep.

She's Unbelievable, and Cute Too

"Lady, you're saying, you were attacked by five men, then a giant rabbit saved you?"

"Yes officer. Her name is Venus."

"Come on..."

"Ask her yourself." (points)

"Huh?"

A six foot (not including long ears), pink and white female rabbit, with a muscular humanoid body, wearing a one piece black swimsuit, and hands on hips stood quietly, looking upset.

"Venus?!"

"Miss La'Deedah to you."

"I don't freaking..."

"Don't swear! Or you'll get no Easter candy."

Glittering Spell

The orrery clicks and the quarter hour rings. I have just fifteen minutes to make my decision. Below the bell tower the cityscape glitters. Mephisto has it all, everyone, under his spell. He gives them a false, half life of laughter and merriment.

I can open their eyes to their true life, but it is full of hunger and hardship.

It is hard to know who is the hero and who the villain.

We Giveth, and We Taketh Away

“Why the entire city?” Ishmael asked.

“Because they deserve it. And then we rebuild.”

“So you created a monster, Coran. And now that monster must be put down?”

“It’s the natural order of things, Ishmael. Would you question your Creator?”

“Of course not, my lady. It’s just . . . you gave them life, and they evolved. Is that not how we grew as a people?”

“We evolved by giving, Ishmael. They evolved by taking.”

Different Perspectives

The Preacher,

“ We most teach our adulterous queen the error of her ways, to leave behind the debauchery taught on foreign shores, if she will not heed us then another more suitable should take her place”

The Queen.

“ Why will no one rid me of that evil man. His sermons turn my people against me. Even my once loyal lords plot to take my throne and place my beloved son in my stead”

NIGHT MANOEUVRES

Silence; no patriotic bickering over being “baddies” or commandos and marines in wars their great-grandfathers had fought. Tonight, to play would be enough.

Seven mothers sleeping soundly, far from fields like chainmail under moonlight. Sweatsuits, collar-up, uniformly black. Plastic pistols shine silver, pink foam bullets leaden grey.

Soon. Soft sneakers seeming tighter, stiffer. Skulls sparkle on baseball caps. Swastikas blooming on shoulders.

Below, marching from churchyard billets, glimmering figures trailing dark wakes in the corn.

How the Never Ending Battle Will End.

Someone moved across the sky, red cape billowing behind him.
Under his burning gaze the L-Corp building melts to slag.
People, guilty and innocent die within trapped for one reason:
Elimination of his nemesis.
Reasons, excuses he gives aplenty.
Mostly though it is to end all crime at last.
A new world order where those HE deems guilty die.
No more heroes or villains, just him. HIS peace, whether we desire it or not.

Reflections on Heroes and Villains

The hero saw suffering and his soul wept.

He hated those who destroyed in meaningless pursuits.

To stop evil no price was too great.

No method was too extreme.

So the good man became evil.

The villain saw opportunity and his soul hoped.

He pitied those who wasted lives in meaningless pursuits.

To create destiny distractions were burned away.

The world forced to accept order, progress and peace.

So the evil man became good.

Huntsman

The Huntsman trained his sights on the target. A man dressedin red; Red Mist, the resident ‘hero’.

Red Mist had foiled his plans one to many times, now he hadto die.
The Huntsman whistled.

About thirty men came out, but didn’t attack.

Red Mist’s fists clenched, wanting to fight. Thurung! Red Mist dropped to the floor arrow in his back.

He smirked, stood up walked away, bow over his shoulder.

Once Out Of The Pit

A swirl in the matter stream became Graf von Terror. He arched an eyebrow. “Herr Diamante, my trial and incarceration were insufficient? I must now face abduction and summary execution at your hands?”

I tossed him the control handset. “Without villains the world has no need for heroes. We define each other, Graf.”

“Have no doubt I will repay this ‘generosity’, schweinehund.” He vanished into the ether.

I sighed. “I’ll give your love to mother.”

Stalked in the Night

Romain Ba'alabo, the Night Stalker, watched from the shadows, his jet black, unkempt hair whipping against his face, stinging his blood red eyes.

Captain Nebula reached down, teeth sparkling, to tousle the child's hair.

With a flash, a yelp, and a thud, the Captain hit the pavement hard, and passed out.

The Stalker stood, scowling, above the prostrate body. He glared at the child, lip curled.

“Never trust a guy in tights, kid,” he growled.

a sword in the dark

She awoke to light streaming from the sword above her." champion, fulfill your goodness"
Using the sword, she righted wrongs, filling with goodness.
When she was full of goodness; the sword absorbed her - completely.
Hanging above the next victim, the sword intoned, " champion ---"

'What the f-'

He saw It, too late.

Despite screeching tyres, the thump of impact left spider web scars across his windscreen. Heart racing from the memory of strange flailing limbs, he dared a peek into his rear-view mirror.

It lay in the road. A tangled heap of impossibility. Monstrous, ungainly, broken.
One awkward appendage twitched. One startled eye blinked.

Demonic invader? Or Eldritch ambassador?
It carried no weapon, but he put the car into reverse anyway.

The UN will assist the private security fleets operating off the east coast of Africa. Red Sea traffic has dwindled since the piracy boom; econ--

‘Agh! Now more dryfoot come!' Dahabo cried, switching the radio off.

‘Here? To Somalia, Captain?'

‘Take command, Geedi. I'm going home to marshal reinforcements.'

Dahabo’s legs shimmered and fused in the late afternoon sun as he dived overboard, disappearing in an iridescent flash under the waves of the Indian Ocean.
