Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE May 2013

What happened?

Set to keep on top of the comments and days fly by...

SB – How many different Legacies are squeezed into one small story? Not only is this a masterclass in playing with the theme, but it is also incredible fun. It's hard to actually say how enjoyable this one was, because it is so fast and furious it actually hides much of what it is. Starting with such an ominous feeling, and delivering a superb moment with the comics. Pure entertainment.

Fishii – A truly touching tale that clearly captures the love of a mother for a child. Who but a mother would poor her last hours into making a companion for a child, a physical reminder of the parent that has gone. But there is the nice feeling at the end that it is more than just a final breath gone into the creation, and that whether it is magic or the imagination of a child, part of the mother will live on in the bear.

EloiseA – The promises of a future that might see things so differently. Where memories, recollections of a lives may be changed and the question becomes just what is real. Is it a reminder of a life spent together or something slightly more sinister, do people become little more than machines where their minds can be rewritten like hard-drives, or is the line blurring so much between man and machine that I cannot tell the difference?

ratsy – Hmm following on from the last sentence, perhaps the line could become more than blurred, perhaps the complexity of machines could lead to leaps in science that offer the escape from mortality. The legacy of one becomes immortality, living on when the biological is worn out and the machine offers eternity. In some ways a glorious idea in others quite chilling.

BetaWolf – Once more, in a totally different way we see the love of a parent offering protection when they are gone, or perhaps just a long way away. There is a comfort in the thought that things can be set to guard us, no matter how old we become the knowledge that a parent is looking over us is a deep comfort indeed. And a black panther is just cool.

Thank you, Victoria. I'm just hoping people will accept it as science fiction, rather than a somewhat belated protest song. There's not all that much story in this one after all.

Thank you, Perpetual Man. I've been working on these characters a while.

Spurring Platty - If a woman took me off to a cave to "make me a man" and then ended up just singing a song to me...

Perhaps that was a story idea best saved for a 300-word entry, where a more sordid ending could have occurred!

And thank you, Victoria

Victoria – Wow. What can I say about a story where the first line was good enough in it's own right – New Mars, that alone opens up so many ideas and concepts that it is extra special; and then the second sentence is even better. The story finishes as strongly as it started, rife with potential and imagination. Stupendous.

BigJ – Something different here, but that makes it no less special, in fact the rhythm and rhyme that this story brings seems to add to the depth, and almost lightens the subject matter so the feeling at the end is not immediately horrific, but as the realisation of what is actually being said crystallises it becomes apparent that this is a lot darker than it gives the lie to. Excellent.

Tywin – I started off by thinking this was a story where the protagonist has a strong voice, giving him a personality all of his own very quickly. But it was not the voice that stole the show apparently. I was completely wrong footed when we hit the big line. A twist to a tale that might have been a little risque, but managed to be undoubtedly entertaining.

Karn – This story could well serve as a warning. Standing in the presented future and looking back you can see the world coming to an end, and the reasons behind it. The destruction would be absolute, and the survivors condemned to a slow lingering death. This is a dark legacy, perhaps of the worst possible kind, and it is well presented and told, giving the right level of chill that such a story needs.

RoninJedi84– This is but a moment, but it is a moment that conveys the passage of time, an epic enshrouded in 75 words. In some ways it does not really matter what it is all about because the epic scope it conveys is what makes it a magnificent tale. The fact that the story of a dormant power picked up and reintroduced into the world is a good one is just the icing on the cake.

Chris – A rather disturbing look back at the past and in the reflections seeing the grim and terrible truth that saw the world lay low. Perhaps it is a warning that future generations look back and see what was wrought as the people that lived before them cared little for what they would leave for those that followed.

DEO – Oh very clever, a little bit of misdirection and you follow the path blindly, thinking it a straightforward warning of things that might come for those living now, from those who went before (on a galactic scale), but the twist that is delivered is we are not the ones receiving the message, we're little more than animals in a zoo. Have we devolved, or are our keepers so far beyond us that we are little more than pets?

TSP – There are many ways that histories can be conveyed and equally there are many ways that a boy can become a man. Here we see the two interlinked in a story that is more about tradition, that in order to accept the burden of adulthood the individual must understand just what it is that has led his people to this point in their existence. A different idea, well conveyed and evocative.

JordanSC5 – There is the feeling of a great dark weight pushing down in this story. I almost imagined it in black and white, looking at this solitary figure trying to come to terms with the enormity of the world he knows being brought to an end. It almost feels as though it is too much for him to comprehend, but whatever it might be he is running from, he just can't seem to escape.

Glen – This starts of as something that feels as though it might be light-hearted and fun, a casual romp, but cleverly that is turned on its head by the end, a well played trick that makes the ending all the more devastating. What could be more emotive than those simple words from the past, the love of a father that lost a son, both for the Captain and the reader both?

johnnyjet – Sometimes even the best of intentions carry more sinister overtones. Such is the case here. Nothing is said but it is the feeling that in determining to keep his legacy running, the 'master' might have ensnared himself into a trap of his own making. How long can he be kept alive as decrepitude creeps in, how long till he years for a death his machines deny him?

Glen -- manages to offer a glimpse of a complex situation, while offering emotional depth, in a few words

johnnyjet -- frightening in its unspoken implications

Femecri -- gives the reader a frisson of strangeness

Thank you Perpetual Man. I enjoyed your story as well. A father usually wants a son to fulfill his legacy and accomplish great things. In your story this might be true if the boy can save the world. Although his son poisened him leading to him letting loose chaos in the world to punish his son, does he still potentially want his boy to succeed? Very clever.

Eloise A, Starbeast and Victoria - thanks all for the kindly reviews. I'm going to cut and paste them all, and put them on my CV.

You'tr welcome and I'm happy to make your day.

I'm throttled by your review. Thanks dude.

LEGACY
(part five)

RoninJedi84 - A powerful and hard hitting story that spans a thousand years is dramatically displayed and stunning to read. Good stuff. Nice to meet you RoninJedi84.

Chrispenycate - A very intense and emensely strong message written in superb poetic form that's in your face. This really got my emotions stirring with it's "pull no punches" words of iron!

David Evil Overlord - We are treated with a sweet coversation between mother and child, plus topped-off with a tremendously cool ending in this entertaining sci-fi tale. Well done.

The Spurring Platty - Surprising story that delves into a people's prehistory with mystifing magic as a woman relays the past to a young member of the community. Marvelous.

JordanSC5 - A dark tale of reoccuring events to a victim trapped to relive the end...forever. Nicely written spooky story that reads like a nightmare episode of the Twilight Zone.

Glen - A great drama about the separation of a father from his bewildered son who was thrust through time. Sad, but well written tale that tugs at my heart. Good Stuff.

Johnnyjet - Astounding science fiction story which reads like those classic pulp comics of the past. The creation of androids to takeover the business of a dying cyber genius. Very cool.

Femecri - A unique tale which flows with enchanting surrealism, and is heavy with dramatic imagary. My eyes became watery as I read through this story. Very intense, and well writen.

Thanks Perpetual Man, Victoria Silverwolf & Starbeast for all of your wonderful & insightful reviews. Each of your reviews offer unique perspectives and often I find myself re-reading what I wrote afterwards and thinking to myself, "Wow! I wrote something pretty good!" (Don't worry, I'm not really getting a big head over it! I'll settle down now.)
