Finding out the hard way

I kept back, not wanting to be seen. Or to scare her.

Somebody wanted her dead, marked her with the Taint. Irresistible to wights.

One struck sooner than expected. I watched as she fell to one knee. But then, silver flashed and the creature screamed.

"Think I don't know when I'm being followed?" Her glamour fell away. Liessa, the Erl King's daughter.

I realised--too late--she wasn't the one who'd walked into a trap.

Enlightenment

Dark matter was observed through missing mass in galaxies and confirmed in experiments deep under mountains, particle accelerators and satellites in space.

Further experiments attempted to unravel the mysterious entity.

Humanity pondered the enigma for millennia but new discoveries dwindled, despite dark matter pervading everything that was known.

A revolution in thought occurred.

None of humanities senses or tools would produce understanding. It must be felt. The soul of the Universe must be felt.

Discovery

Politicians said the building of the Observatory near the North Pole was wasteful. With our faltering economy we needed to focus more on practical things like job creation or immigration reform. It came as a complete surprise when the giant telescope discovered something moving toward us from the edge of the galaxy.

We filtered their broadcasts from the teeming background noise of space. They call themselves ‘humans’.

Immigration just got a whole lot more interesting.

Over the Edge

It was a sock under the bed that had done it.

His ship pitched left, banked right, thrusters screaming.

She had denied it, but the murder ball player had come back for his lucky sock.

The asteroid field flew by faster and faster.

He was hanging ten over the cliff edge of sanity with every fiber of his being screaming “Jump!”

He smiled as he cleared the field, spotting the team’s shuttle. Trigger fingers twitched.

Love On The Rocks

With Flint we sailed the Seven Seas
Our enemies brought to their knees
The Spanish Main a hunting ground
With bounteous booty to be found

That was until the day, alas
Our Captain, through his looking glass
Espied a damsel in distress
And hastened to her aid, no less

No ship could hold athwart our guns
The fleetest sail afloat outrun
Yet this time we had found our match
Into a lair of sirens catch'd

A second introduction

“Ladiesand Gentleman, I give you the inventor of Poppleasian Mathematics, Mr Arthur Popple”

“Umm, discoverer.”

“Sorry?”

“I discovered Poppleasian mathematics, not invented it.”

“But its got your name.”

“Because I discovered it.”

"That's handy isn't it.”

“What?”

“Poppleasian Mathematics just happens to be 'discovered' by Mr Popple!”

“Umm.”

“Isn't discovery easier than invention? People discover things by accident,”

“Well actually I was looking for a proof of...”

“Ladies and Gentlemen....”

The King Is Dead...

...In other news, the Society of Cunning Alchemists has successfully raised the body of Richard III.

Several lawsuits have resulted. As Richard’s body was discovered in what is now a car park, Leicester City Council is suing the zombified King for more than five centuries of unpaid parking fees.

And King Richard’s lawyer, Vlad Tepes, has launched civil action against the zombified William Shakespeare for calumny, vilification and traducement, over his play Richard III...

One Step Ahead

“That ship can’t exist. It was destroyed. Everyone knows it was destroyed.”

“Yet there it is. Fancy making history?”

“Do I look that stupid?”

“You mine asteroids for a living, don’t you?”

We docked. There was power, there was a breathable atmosphere. We were alone.

Almost.

A synthetic voice issued from beneath a red camera lens. “Welcome aboard, gentlemen. This ship has a new mission, and it requires a new crew. Welcome aboard Discovery One.”

What's In the Box?

We found the carved stone box so deep under the Antarctic ice that it could only have been there since the time of the dinosaurs. But the markings, they were similar to Aztec or Mayan.

How could that be?

There was no sign of a hinge, lock or parting.

I held it: something ancient; prayed that it would open.

With a click the top began to rise, and the secrets it held would be reveaaaaaaaargh!!!! ........

Sweet Stolen Waters

I'm dying now, a very old man.

I spent most of my long life fruitlessly searching the farthest worlds for the Immortality Pool. It was a legend originated by someone's personal translation of alien writings found in an abandoned settlement. A distinguished research scientist, I volunteered for all the riskiest deep space assignments. But it was my obsession which drove me.

I'm dying now, forever dying.

I found it just in time.

Dark Discovery

The secret of unending life is mine! For much of history I searched to avoid life's inevitable. Centuries of study, chemistry and murder have yielded.

Simple vampirism kept me alive at first. Sadly entropy increases exponentially, each rebirth requiring more life force. Greater deaths providing the energy to extend my life.

Entire wars have been arranged, just so I endure. I have the key to eternal life. All I need do is kill everyone else.

Bad Day At The Office

"Honey, I'm home! Work let me off early and-- Who are you?...

"Hello ... Roger. What are you doing with my wife?...

"Witchcraft? In this house? Don't be ridiculous! And how exactly does that identify witches?...

"Oh. Well, it's an unorthodox method, to say the least. Did you find anything?...

"That's great news. Isn't it, darling?...

"Cheerio, now. Best of luck with the witchfinding....

"Nice chap, that Roger. Shame I've just hexed his brakes."

The Collector

Teruns’ hand cupped the light so none spilled anywhere but in the chest he had opened. It had taken all of his considerable skills to bypass the wizards’ protections.

His discerning gaze assessed the value of the haul. Gold, of course, and jemstones, but something else drew his eye. A marvelous dark blade. Drawing it he felt dizzy…

“Thank you, daddy. Another toy soldier!”

“Yes son, but look closely. This one is a thief!”

The Shed

It was right at the back of the shed that Sophie found her, hiding inside a small terracotta plant pot on the bottom shelf.

Her dress was all in tatters and she had cobwebs suck in her hair, her wings were covered in soil.

Sophie knew what she was straight away but being a sensible girl she didn’t gasp or gape open-mouthed in surprise.

“Let me help you hide” she whispered softly.

A Finger-Lickin Discovery

‘Which way, Princess Ketty?’ the centaur asked.
‘Through the forest!’
‘Right-ho!’ He charged onwards.

***

Prospero mounted his unicorn, ‘Finally!’
‘You have your spices and potions, master?’
‘Yes, now-- what the…’

Boom!

The beasts collided; the spices ignited and all were grilled to a crisp.

Later the Black Colonel arrived at the scene and picked over the sizzling centaur flesh. ‘Mmmmmm; chicken.’

‘No,’ groaned the dying druid, ‘that was Ketty’s Favourite Centaur.’

Re: July 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE

Why

On the opposite sides of the universe, two teams of explorers set out from their respective planets with the same goal. A radio wave reached scientists of their worlds at the same time, with the same message. Within a year, both species mobilized into the stars, set out on a journey of profound importance to their civilizations' place in the cosmos. After two hundred years of traveling, they reached their destination: a place called Earth.

Into the Fire

The dread march of time no longer holds sway.

My immortal wings carry me to the darkest corners of the galaxy, seeking answers to the questions mankind has been asking for centuries. Tonight I fly into the heart of a star to see if my skin—the skin that has withstood a millennia of swords and guns—will survive a millisecond of nuclear apocalypse.

The star awaits, and it beckons me to beauty or death.

The Discovery of a Lifetime

It was the greatest discovery of my life - a cure for death.

I wasn't permitted human trials, so I turned the needle on myself ... and it worked. I ceased ageing at the cellular level. No disease could touch me.

But I couldn’t replicate it. Some quirk of the initial experiment eluded me.

My wife grew old, and died.

Then my children.

And their children.

And, immortal, I discovered death still mocked me.

Fishing For Ideas

I throw my pen down. My mind is thinking about lunch and the rain, but nothing that would make a good story.

I didn't want to do this, but looming deadlines can change a person. Reluctantly, I stand up, grab my fishing rod, and turn and cast it into the portal behind me.

Within seconds, I feel a tug. Reeling in the line, I smile when I see what I've caught. This will do nicely!

Uncomplicated

Rhykelkin, ferocious Wielder and High Lord of the Shepherds, was dead and gone, but his Well of Knowledge remained.

If you are bold enough to take it.

Ignoring the holoprojector’s warning, Kinson followed the flameless lamps lining the cave’s walls to the ancient retinal scanner. With a shutter he presented the festered organ. Entrance was granted, the datapad given.

But he soon discovered the High Lord’s fabled Well contained only three words.
