Genius Denied

You can check my work, doctor -- it's all right here in this notebook. If I dare say so myself, it's brilliant. No, more than that, it actually is brilliance!”

How so?”

Well, -- and I must admit, quite by accident -- I have discovered the cure for stupidity!”

Good heavens, man, keep your voice down!”

Why?”

If this gets out, nobody will ever buy all the other things we make!”

Hey -- give me back my notebook. Stop!”

Survival Of The Fittest

‘Don’t hesitate, act immediately!’ they’d warned on the radio. His ma has all the signs – trembling, fever, blotchy skin. He ain’t takin’ no risks.

“Sorry, Ma.” He tries to aim the pistol, but his hand shakes and sweat runs into his eyes.

A noise behind him, he turns his sister, and his father carrying a shotgun.

“Sorry, Son. I ain’t takin’ no risks.”

“Pa, no!” He raises a hand – a blotchy hand.

Blank Canvas

The rose unfolded, and I discovered beauty.

The sprite enchanted me, and I discovered sensuality.

We shared our love and I discovered joy.

Our children were born and I discovered unconditional love.

We played together and I discovered contentment.

I grew old and discovered serenity.

I woke in the meadow and discovered I was dreaming.

The sprite discovered me and brought my children.

I discovered a realm beyond ours.

I discovered myself, inside.

True discovery.

T’riffic

Plant hunters of Old Earth had it easy, Masen reckoned. China. Japan. Camellias. Magnolias. Not like her. Six months scavenging the dead zone. Close encounters with an event horizon. And now –

“I’ve a bad feeling about this, Masen.”

“An unknown botanic, it’s worth ten million kredits. Get moving.”

“It’s looking at us. It’s – ”

A scream, a sucking noise, and, Masen hoped, a long slow digestion. She’d like the thing sold before it needed another crewman.

Crime investigation sorcery

"What's been covered, can be recovered,"

chanted the forensic shaman, feathers and tassels bouncing as he pranced round the crime scene.

"Distraction smothered, the truth uncovered…"

When I joined we decided who'd committed a crime, and persuaded them to confess, or perhaps a small present? Now it's all 'indisputable truth', heavy, dense; trial by combat was more amusing.

"The thief discovered."

The rattle swung down and pointed at – no, not me, I'm heading this investigation…

And To The Stars We Sang

They called it 'Black Friday'. The day tech crashed, wiping out civilization overnight.

Now we all sang.

They erased us. Still we sang
.
They burned us. Great piles of tech screaming in blast furnaces.

The song of creation didn’t stop.

At the Smithsonian, we asked the Grand Dame for her wings to dance once more with the heavens.

So Prometheus’s Fire split the Washington night as Discovery found her way to sing among the stars.

Edward’s Story

I’ve never understood how people believe in transformations. You know: vampires into bats; werewolves; scientists into personifications of evil. It’s simply bad zoology, particularly for a supposedly reversible process.

Henry believed such nonsense. Yes, he facilitated the process, but only by helping me open a portal through which we briefly swapped universes. Only helped: I discovered the secret, not him.

Ezekiel’s ego’s not so large. He knows his place.

So now it’s Hyde and Zeke.
