Writing Challenge Statistics

In fifth place with 22 votes! Wow! Nice. Thanks to everyone who got me there. Of course, none of us are in it for the votes or mentions, are well? It's just for the satisfaction of meeting a challenge. Right? (However, it's always a thrill to get a mention or a vote. Can't deny that.)

Just remember, always keep an eye out over your shoulder 'cause you'll never know when the word ninja will strike.

Although looking at this months 75, I suspect never.

Here’s the second episode of the Annual Statistics, the cumulative figures for the nine years of the 75 Word Challenges ending at March 2019.

75 Worder – Years 1 to 9 inclusive

After so many years of the 75s, the table that lists everyone who has ever taken part is a monster length-wise, so the attached is again an abridged version omitting those who have entered the Challenges only once.

As before, I’ve put the total figures in a separate little table of their own after the entrants list. That shows we've now had 564 entrants in the Challenge's eight years. Those entrants have produced a total of 5207 stories which together have accrued 5202 votes. However, the number of entries for 2018-19 was the lowest ever at only 521 which is a shame.

As at the end of 2018-2019 we had 3 members with 100% participation – mosaix, TDZ, and Ursa. Close behind were chrispenycate and Parson with 104 entries out of a possible 108, then came Perp and me with 100.

When it comes to the leaderboard after 9 years, somewhat surprisingly I’m still hanging onto the lead albeit by my fingernails, but TDZ’s excellent year has brought her into second place and mosaix, who also had a doubly-excellent year, is fast encroaching upon us. The top 20 looks like this (with apologies for the space taken -- the table has a mind of its own once copied here!):

Some things to note:
  • Teresa achieved her 160 votes with only 58 entries which I make to be a rate of 2.76 votes per story, which is marvellous!
  • Hoopy got her 86 votes with only 28 entries which is 3.07 votes per story and just incredible!
  • Hex and alchemist are still in the top 10 despite not taking part for two and three years respectively!

Also attached is the updated table showing the winners and runners-up over the 9 years – mosaix dominating it with his 10 wins, of course, dammit!

But one aspect I forgot to mention in my review of 2018-19 the other day is that the last four months of the year brought four new names to the winners’ column – Mad Alice, Artoriarius, nixie and Luiglin – congrats to them all!

Oh, I LOVE tables like this! Thank you for presenting this, TJ.
I'm proud to say that I have participated in Challenges with everyone mentioned here. So many great writers and stories, over the years.
Wonder what the table will look like ten years from now?? ;)

edit to add: since these entries are the only fiction I write, it's especially nice to see my name on the list, as this is the only feedback I ever get.

I think few know where I live ... are ninjas good at finding people?? ;)

I've been entering the Challenges for 6.5 years, so I guess it's possible that somewhere out there is a non-member who would join, and make the list over the next decade.

Good grief @The Judge, how long did it take to do all that? Not that I'm not grateful, of course, just astounded!
Getting the basic information down isn't too bad, it's the wrestling with the bloody tables that takes all the time -- I swear they're possessed of a malevolent intelligence and they have a grudge against me!

Yes, that's right -- TDZ dropped out earlier this year. I think there are three or perhaps four of us still with 100% records in the 300s, but I can't say for sure until I've got all the stats up to date!

As to which, I hope to be getting the 300 worder stats out some time this week but to avoid everyone collapsing in a heap with statistic-fatigue I'll leave the 2019-2020 figures until the new year, and come April I'll try and get the 2020-21 figures out so we're completely up to date.

Here’s the final tranche of the stats for 2018-9, or at least the first part of it.

300 Worders -- Year 8 -- 2018-19

It was something of a disappointing year as far as numbers are concerned, with all the key metrics down. We had only 52 entrants in the four Challenges, down from 66 the year before, with 14 newcomers, down from 19, and unsurprisingly that meant fewer stories written, only 121 entries down from 155.

The best month, with 32 entries, was so poor it was actually worse than the previous year's worst month of 35 stories (the best month for the previous year brought in 41 entries), and two months tied for worst with only 29 stories, a new low.

Some 18 of us completed all 4 Challenges, while 3 completed 3 Challenges, 9 did 2, and some 22 members took part only once, though 3 of those were newbies in the January Challenge.

Voting also saw a sharp decrease, with a total of 420 votes well down from 489, and 144 voters over the four Challenges, down from 165.

Unfortunately, a big drop in entrants didn’t translate into a big drop in “missing” voters, ie those members entering a Challenge and for whatever reason not voting in that quarter, and we had 9 missing votes, only marginally down on the previous year’s 10, spread over 8 non-voting entrants, one established member failing to vote twice.

Perhaps one corollary of having fewer entrants and entries, though, is that some members who didn’t have time or inclination to enter that year fortunately did find opportunity to vote. So the good news is we had many more “extra” votes, ie those from members who voted without taking part, with 32 extra votes, up from 20, from 19 voting non-entrants, up from 16. I’ve attached another Thank You list, and we thank everyone on the list but especial thanks once again to nixie who voted in each Challenge without taking part, and Abernovo, farntfar and Vaz who so voted three times each. Thank you, all.

The year 2018-9 was dominated by Victoria Silverwolf and Phyrebrat – Victoria won twice, becoming the first person ever to win consecutive quarters, and Phyrebrat had one win and a second place that nearly forced a tie-break, and fittingly the two of them came joint top for the year with 36 votes each. I scrambled into third place with 26 votes, and in fourth place with 18 votes were Cat’s Cradle, Luiglin and mosaix. Rafellin was seventh with 17 votes, Shyrka eighth with 16, LittleStar ninth with 15 and M. Robert Gibson in tenth place had 13 votes in his first year of entering.

A few note-worthy and praise-worthy feats for the year 2018-9:
  • As mentioned above, Victoria’s consecutive wins, the first ever -- her coming joint first capped three previous consecutive years of second place, showing just how excellent a writer she is
  • Victoria and Phyrebrat‘s first and second place in April gave them a joint total of 33 votes, which is the second highest total since the 300 Challenges began (that's disregarding instances of joint second place, which makes it too complicated!)
  • DEO had the best votes-per-story average after grabbing 10 votes with his one and only entry where he made the tie-break
  • M. Robert Gibson got an incredible 9 votes in his very first 300 worder!

A very belated welcome to newbies who joined in the year 2018-9, and congrats, too, not only to MRG as noted above, but also to Daysman with 5 votes and elvet with 4 votes in their respective first entries.

A cumulative look at the eight years of the 300 worders to follow shortly. (I hope...)

Raises small hand - I think I entered at least one?

Not that year, no.**

That's the trouble with me being so far behind in the stats -- we've had 7 further 300 worders since then, not to mention all the 75s coming between, and 2018-9 feels like ancient history now!

**Not unless I've made colossal mistakes. Though, frankly, that possibility can't be ruled out...

Lazy me! :D

And here’s Part Two of the 300 Worders, and the conclusion to the stats for the year 2018-9.

300 Worders – Years 2011-2 to 2018-9 inclusive

The eight full years of the 300 Worder brought us to a total of 1213 stories. Those came from 246 entrants who received 3820 votes.

As I’d noted above, the figures for the year 2018-9 were worse than the year before, and in fact as can be seen in the attached table showing the cumulative figures for all eight years, that year was the worst to date, with the lowest ever figures for stories, entrants, newcomers and votes.

The best and worst months for stories also showed the lowest figures since the Challenges began. By way of comparison:
  • the highest number of entries in a Challenge per year – 42; 52; 39; 39; 45 (twice); 39; 41; and for 2018-9, 32
  • the lowest number of entries in a Challenge per year – 34; 43; 34; 33; 35; 31; 35; and for 2018-9, 29 (twice)
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that as and when I deal with the 2019-20 stats there will be some improvement in all those areas.

As at the end of the 2018-9, there were still 4 of us with 100% records, having completed all 32 Challenges (mosaix, Perp, me and Ursa), with johnnyjet having completed 29, Chris p 28, Phyrebrat and Starbeast 27 and Victoria 25. The number of entrants who had taken part in only one Challenge then stood at 114.

Some changes occurred at the top of the overall leaderboard, with their respective magnificent wins propelling Victoria into second place up from third and Phyrebrat up from sixth into fourth. The top 15 now looks like this (with apologies for the odd looking table again):

Of note is that some six of those in the top 15 – namely Jo, Teresa, Juliana, TDZ, alchemist and Hex – didn’t take part in 2018-9, and indeed Juliana had missed the year before that, too, and alchemist and Hex hadn’t taken part in three years.

So, we didn’t, as I’d hoped, welcome our 250th entrant to the 300 Worders in the 2018-9 year, but I’m confident that the figures for 2019-20 will get us there. And with luck they’ll also show an improvement in all the other markers, and perhaps new faces on the leaderboard. All will be revealed when I deal with the stats in the New Year!

Year 10 Statistics

A little later than I'd hoped, as real life keeps getting in the way even though I'm going nowhere and doing nothing! As ever, starting with the 75 worders, with the table attached for the 2019-2020 year.

75 worder – Year 10 – April 2019 to March 2020

Unfortunately, this wasn't a good year for the figures.

The slight increases we saw for Year 9 as noted in post #268 above weren’t sustained. The number of members entering the Challenges dropped from 115 in 2018-9 to 106 entrants for 2019-2020 and new entrants fell from 38 to 32 newcomers to the Challenges.

In addition, the decreases reported for 2018-2019 have worsened. The number of stories fell from 521 to 497 entries, with the highest achieving month only getting 47 stories, also down, and the lowest ever monthly count dropping sharply from 38 to a very disappointing 33 stories, and this time we had two months in which no new entrants took part.

As might be expected with those figures, the number of votes also fell, though not as drastically as before, down from 508 to 499 votes over the year.

The one bright note is that though we still had a problem with the number of members who entered a Challenge but then didn’t vote, those figures improved on the 2018-19 year. We had five months with more voters than entrants, up from four, and over the entire year, though we had 39 entrants who failed to vote, this was better than the 45 of the previous year, and the total of 50 “missing” votes was far better than the previous year's 71.

One again, the missing votes were partly compensated by the 33 members who voted without entering (literally compensated in some instances, since once again several members appear on both lists), giving us 52 “extra” votes. A Thanks List is again attached, and special thanks to Artoriarius, DEO and Starbeast who each voted 3 times in Challenges they didn’t enter, and enormous thanks once again to Abernovo who so voted a total of 6 times.

While I’d again confirm that these statistics are a matter of fun – the real success is to take part and meet the Challenges – for those of us obsessed with votes and our relative positions on the leaderboard, here are some details:

The winner for 2019-20 was VICTORIA SILVERWOLF with 31 votes!

In second place was mosaix with 25 votes, then I shared third place with M. Robert Gibson with 22 votes and Danny McG was fifth with 21. Luiglin came in sixth with 19 votes, and nixie, Teresa and TDZ were joint seventh with 18 votes and Culhwch was tenth with 17.

Some noteworthy points:
  • Teresa’s 18 votes came in only three outings in the year, two of which she won!
  • mosaix's win in the year means he is the first – and so far only – member to get eleven wins!
  • Margaret Note Spelling won with 10 votes in only her second Challenge!
  • Shyrka, Danny McG, elvet and Daysman also won for the first time, and Danny then greedily went on to win a second time!

As ever, if anyone sees any mistakes in the stats, let me know. I'll try and get the cumulative figures for 2010-2010 out in the next few days.
