Writing Challenge Statistics

As I read those stats, anyone who averages a vote a contest on the 75 will make their way up the leader board post haste. So many of us do not come close to averaging a vote a contest. When I look at @Teresa Edgerton with nearly 3 votes a contest entered and having entered 61 of them, she might be the queen of the contest in terms of consistent quality. Her total number of votes even exceeds our one and only @HareBrain who makes winning look so easy.

Attrition is my plan. The problem is that it works both ways.

I'm always so surprised to see myself still on these sorts of lists, considering my poor attendance rate.

You'd think that might spur me to try harder and yet...

Indeed she is, just about, with 2.918 votes per entry.

And you're second, with 2.9.

I'll see if I can paste the table:

Good to see all those accountancy qualifications haven't gone to waste, HB! :p Actually, perhaps you ought to be doing the stats, not me, since you understand them a lot better than I do!

That's right -- of course, the hard part is to ensure one averages that one vote per Challenge! But that's also the reason that I was thinking of starting the cumulative lists from scratch from the 2020-2021 year, as it means that newcomers to the Challenges have a better chance of getting onto the leaderboard, even if their average is currently less than one per Challenge, rather than the leadership always being skewed to those who entered a lot early on but perhaps haven't taken part in a long while eg like alchemist.

Thanks your Hon. I was a little surprised to be featured seeing as I’ve stopped entering the 75.

Maybe...:)

Well, start writing again, both of you! No excuses! Especially if you want to find yourself on similar tables in the future.

And that goes for HB, too -- it's time for the bunny to prove himself all over again!

And the next instalment of the 2019-2010 Writing Challenges statistics...

300 Worders Year 9 – 2019-20

Good news! While we’re still far from the glory days of yesteryear, the stats for 2019-20 were much better than for 2018-19.

To start, we had 61 entrants in the four Challenges, up from 52, with 19 newcomers up from 14, which also meant we had more stories, 134 entries up from 121.

The best month with 36 entries was better than 2018-9’s 32 (though still nowhere as good as the 41 of the year before) and the worst month had 31 entries, so still not wonderful but better than the 29 of 2018-9.

Spookily, 18 of us completed all four Challenges and 3 completed three Challenges, exactly the same figures as for 2018-9! Then some 13 members took part twice, but a somewhat disappointing 27 entrants only entered one Challenge over the year (though 7 of those were newbies in the January Challenge). Since a number of them were established members, let's see if we can encourage them to make more than a single visit to the Challenges in the future.

Voting also increased in 2019-20, though only to 447 votes, up from the 420 of 2018-19 but still well down on the previous year’s 489, and there were 151 voters over the four Challenges, also up from the 144 of 2018-9 but down on the 165 of the year before.

More good news is the increase in entrants didn’t translate into an increase in “missing” voters, that is those who entered a Challenge but didn’t vote that quarter, and we had only 4 missing votes, well down on the 9 of 2018-9, from 4 voters, 2 of whom were newbies so not as clued up/used to the voting timetable. Even better, in the July Challenge we had no missing votes at all since every person who entered also voted!

However, perhaps because more people entered the Challenges, we had a lot fewer “extra” votes, ie those from members who voted in a Challenge without taking part. Altogether we had 21 extra votes, down from 32, coming from 17 voting non-entrants. As before a Thank You list is attached, and everyone on that list deserves a round of applause.

And the year was again dominated by Victoria Silverwolf who once more came top with 36 votes. I managed to get into second place with 27 votes, just ahead of Cat’s Cradle on 26 and Perpetual Man who came fourth with 25 votes. In fifth place was mosaix with 23 votes, joint sixth were Peter V and Phyrebrat with 22, Culhwch came in eighth with 18, elvet ninth with 16 and Luiglin was tenth with 15 votes.

Note-worthy feats for 2018-19 all come from newbies who joined the 300s for the first time in 2019-20, several of whom made excellent scores in their very first outings, including Guttersnipe who had 7 votes, Elckerlyc who had 8, and Garfunkel who had a stupendous 10 votes! Belated welcomes to them and to all the other newcomers for the year.

I hope to be getting the cumulative figures for the first nine years of the 300s out shortly (but don't hold your breath...)

I've had a good luck at the stats for the 75 worder and it's interesting. I'd forgotten all my second places, which shows how tough a task master this wee competition is. I'll have to get back in the grove and up my game, there is a knack to this that and I've lost my touch in my absence.

Eek! I've just realised that not only am I way behind in the stats -- with 20-21 and 21-22 still to do -- but I didn't even finish off the cumulative 300s up to 2019-20!

Right, well, it looks like I've got a job to keep me busy all of next week...

Well, I'm WFH, like the entire Civil Service, so what do you expect?!

(That's Working From Home, for those unused to the acronym.)

@The Judge thanks for explaining that. I was lifting an eyebrow working out the F in the acronym.
