MARVEL Agents of SHIELD

J. August Richards talked about what he thinks about where Deathlok is heading in this season:

Man, I have such strong feelings for my character. For me, the most important thing that I would like to see him find is redemption for himself, and be able to face his son again. In my mind, I won't consider the character resolved until he holds that little boy in his arms again.

I am so loving this series - not least the slow reveal of secrets upon secrets. I can't recall the last time there was such a sense of discovery with a TV series - other than Babylon 5. This is great stuff - once you get past the A-Team action and low-denomination family entertainment angle they sometimes pitch it at.

It has been a long time since Whedon had a chance to dabble with a series that's directly as good as what Buffy and Angel was, not talking about the success he made with the Firefly. But I wouldn't say it's the best series at the moment. Not at least to me, but then again everyone has their own personal opinions on what's good and what's not so great.

Joss Whedon helped to conceive this series and acts as Executive Producer, but he doesn't have much else to do with this show, especially since so much of his time has been taken up with Age of Ultron. The showrunners are Jeffrey Bell, Maurissa Tancharoen and Joss's brother Jed Whedon.

Just saying- give credit where its due.

Fitz and Simmons are featured prominently on Coulson’s side, and there’s been a lot of focus lately on their different reactions to the events that have happened to the team. Does that get explored a little more?

With FitzSimmons, one of the things we’ve tried to do over the course of the year is split them up and bring them back together, and split them up and bring them back together. And they’ve really been on opposite sides of this whole alien thing, this whole, “can we trust Coulson?” “Are powered people okay?” And how they feel about Skye. And so they both have a hand in how this story plays out. It’s a way to sort of highlight the story their characters have been on for the last number of episodes, and for Fitz especially, who’s really not been out on missions since last year. Getting Fitz out and doing something different is fun. We’re getting into the home stretch here, the last few where everything sort of picks up momentum, and hopefully all our different threads come together in a surprising and magical and yet logical way.

I know he’s not technically represented in the poster, but because he’ll have a big part in this episode, can you talk a little bit about Luke Mitchell’s character and what meeting him will mean for Skye?

Meeting Luke’s character in the Inhuman world is just setting up a new dynamic. We’re taking her into a group with a whole bunch of different people. So far, we’ve seen that there’s a guy with no eyes, and there’s a woman who now is covered in thorns. And as in the X-Men world, there are a handful of people who look more like them, but a lot of them turn out to be just attractive people with powers. And we thought, “Hey, let’s have some of those as well!” [laughs] We were looking for a new character to come on, and Luke just really impressed us. He was a good actor, had a nice quality, and we felt he might be a good person to sort of usher Skye into this other world.

I really want to like this series, but it just doesn't do it for me.
The dialogue sounds like someone watched back-to-back Buffy, got the gist of Buffy-speak, but ignored the heart and context.
Also, I can't fully get behind any of the characters. For me, I need a favourite character, but can't find one here.
I feel it suffered by its connection to the first Avengers movie. Instead of action, there's a lot of standing around a room talking.

This show is all about the Fitz-Simmons, at least to me. :D

I actually like the fact that it ties into the movies, they made connections building up to the latest one too, but the most reason season has been so action and suspense packed that it gets away with deferring some of the action to the movies. It gives us an idea of chronological order so that we can watch the movies alongside the series and not feel like we are skipping/going back in time to fill in details.

But yes, the first season didn't really get into the action until after the movie because they didn't want to spoil the plot of the movie, which is fair enough, but all that standing around a room talking and the episode nature of the first episodes was still good character development and world building that gave much more impact to the post-movie action when it finally arrived. The mid-season twist would have fallen flat without it, and the second half of the first season and beyond has been a complete thrill to watch.

I imagine the buffy-speak comes from the fact that Joss Whedon is one of the writers of the show and it's his influence on the script, so no doubt would have similarities. In which case it's strange to criticize it, pretty much saying that he's lost his talent and forgotten his roots. Which of course is quite possible, but also very sad. I know it's cheesy, but I think it's quirky adorableness might be one of the sides of it that actually gives it a life of its own.

It's nice for one of his shows to last more than 1-2 seasons again!

I wouldn't say it's all about Fitz-Simmons but that's a big component. And, speaking of Joss (his brother Jed and Jed's wife are the main folks behind it and Joss is doing the Avengers movies so it'd be kinda shocking if it didn't feel very Whedonesque and it's one of the things I like about it)... Okay. Too much digression. Speaking of Joss, I'm in a similar boat with this show as I was with Buffy, it seems. I loved Buffy and, when I started posting on the internet, I was amazed to find she was actually very unpopular with a significant slice of fandom who loved Xander, Willow, etc. Similarly, I have come to really really like Skye and she seems fairly unpopular with some folks. And who doesn't like Coulson? Or the new big guy whose name I can't think of - Fitz's pal? And so on. :)

Anyway, yeah - different strokes, but I like several characters and the dramedy action/humor mix and so on.

And, yeah, continued success is really nice. (Will not yell about Firefly again, will not yell about Firefly again...)

Mack.

I like Fitz-Simmons quite a lot, even though it took me about 8 episodes to remember which was which.

That's half the fun. :p They can't be separated into two different identities and still retain their original character. It's "the" Fitz-Simmons for a reason. ;)

To me it's not all about Fitz-Simmons. To me Shield was originally a series I never had, but always wanted because to be honest, there never was a good or even great superhero shows in the television. Shield has won me over, even though its different to what I read in the comics back in the eighties and nineties. I just don't let it bother me that much as I can enjoy it being the way it is, and I'm really glad it's not a stand-alone but open one in the Marvel Multiverse. It would be interesting to see other worlds, how other counterparts are working.

Mack - thanks.

And ditto - I still have to stop and make sure I'm using the right name if I'm discussing them separately. Jemma Simmons goes together pretty well and so Fitz is Fitz. :)

Simmons alive and well!

One of the questions that Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 needs to answer is that of Simmons' fate. At the end of season 2, she was sucked into the big Inhuman stone sloshy thingie, for want of a better description.

Although the slosh-stone might look a bit like a Symbiote, it's probably not. But will it dole out super-powers, or disease, or what? According to Elizabeth Henstridge, who plays Simmons, we'll be finding out quite soon.

"We're going to find out what happened to Simmons pretty quickly," Henstridge said at a swanky press event in the States. "She's definitely changed by the experience, and what's happened to her is going to impact the season -- kind of as a theme or something like that."

Season 3 Synopsis.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns for an action-packed third season, with Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Agent Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) leading the charge as S.H.I.E.L.D. searches the world for more powered people in the aftermath of their epic battle with Jiaying and her army of Inhumans. However, Coulson and the team soon find out that they are not the only group looking for these new Inhumans.

Many months after their war with a rogue group of Inhumans, the team is still reeling. Coulson is again trying to put the pieces of his once revered organization back together while also dealing with the loss of his hand. His confidante and second in command, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), has yet to return from an impromptu vacation with ex-husband Andrew (Blair Underwood); deadly superspy Agent Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki) is recovering from her traumatic torture at the hands of Grant Ward (Brett Dalton); Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) is obsessed with discovering the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge); and all are on high-alert for the next move from Ward and Hydra.

Ever since the existence of Super Heroes and aliens became public knowledge after the Battle of New York, the world has been trying to come to grips with this new reality. Coulson assembled a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division). S.H.I.E.L.D.’s mission: to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive.

But bigger threats loom ahead, setting the stakes even higher for the Agents, including the spread of Terrigen, an alien substance that unlocks superhuman abilities in select individuals; the emergence of new Inhumans who cannot yet control nor understand their powers; the rise of a new government organization that will go toe-to-toe with S.H.I.E.L.D.; the unknown properties of the massive alien Kree monolith, which has taken one of their own; and the constant threat of a rebuilt Hydra terrorist organization under S.H.I.E.L.D. traitor Grant Ward, who is making it his personal mission to take down Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D.

New faces, both friend and foe, will join the series, including the no-nonsense, highly-skilled and somewhat mysterious leader (Constance Zimmer) of the ATCU (Advanced Threat Containment Unit), her intimidating partner, Banks (Andrew Howard), Lash (Matthew Willig), a monstrous Inhuman whose loyalties remain ambiguous, and new Inhuman Joey (Juan Pablo Raba), who is struggling to harness his newfound abilities, among other surprising characters.

Coulson, with the help of Daisy and Mack (Henry Simmons), will work to slowly assemble a team that is stronger than ever before, combining the highly skilled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with powered individuals in the hopes of protecting the innocent in a world where the balance of power is ever-shifting, and new dangers are constantly emerging."
