Discussion thread -- seventy-five word challenge October 2013

Such good stories, AGAIN. My final list was:

Bowler (you've an evil mind ;))
Boneman
The Dusty Zebra
Tywin
DEO
AMB
The Judge
Dream Walker

There's only one vote, though, and it went to The Judge.

A quick Honourable Mention to Andersson. First post and very good. Didn't quite make my list, but impressive. :)

I really enjoyed my first 75 comp. And I loved reading the entries. So many great stories - the voting was the hardest part.

Shortlist:

Paranoid Marvin - Brilliant flow
Springs - A twist that stuck in my mind
Ursa Major - Original whimsy
Victoria Silverwolf - Fantastic imagery
The Judge - Suspenseful thrill
Sinister42 - Heart warming with the feel good factor

My runners up:

TheDustyZebra - I loved the use of language and its twist in the repetition. It got everyone talking. Both theme and genre nailed.

AMB - A tale that went down like smooth scotch, with a kick at the end. The twist was unexpected and a pleasure to read. Well executed.

Mr Orange - Deliciously evil? Your entry gave me chills and the scenario was clearly displayed in all its sinister darkness. Do it!

My Vote:

Tywin - For me: The genre was right on target, it felt like a complete ghost story. The theme really spoke out from the oldest profession in the world. To that final warning of Leeroy! Nicely done Tywin.

Sorry for extra post.

Thank you so much for the shortlisting Victoria and Springs

and for the vote devaed - Thank you!!! - that has made my weekend!
is it time for wine yet? :)

Victoria, Thanks for the short listing. It was much appreciated.

Well done everyone. Lots of lovely stories. :)
Ok! Vote this month went to paranoid marvin. Loved it from the first moment I read it.

My shortlist:
Boneman
Hex
TheDustyZebra
Tywin
Abernovo
Alchemist
Ursa major
Brev

Shortlist:
Victoria Silverwolf
Boneman
The Dusty Zebra
Mr Orange
Abernovo
Alchemist - my winner. Made me smile, made me feel a bit sad and I love anyone who can build scene and character in 75 words like that.
DreamWalker – I loved Penny, fab character. She came a very close second.

Thank you to Glen and Juliana for the mentions, and to Mosaix for the vote :).

This month's entries had a preponderance of two themes; sex or loss, and there was also a strong appearance of humour, making it hard to choose.

I was able to make the following long list and short list, so don't worry :rolleyes:;

Long list

  • After – Hex
  • Pale Memories – ratsy
  • Choice – Juliana
  • Letting Go – Mosaix
  • Death? Hmm… - Mattc (just loved the line; monstrous wailing things trapped between the planes of life and death)
  • Streetwalker – Tywin
  • The Pleasure of Release – Mr Orange
  • Mer-murings – Tisiphone
  • All The Fun of the Fair – Nixie
  • What I did on my Halloween – David Evil Overlord
  • Ghost of a Smile – Stormcrow
  • Girls and Boys Come Out to Play – Perpetual Man
  • Ghost Stories – Culhwch
  • Unlucky 13 – The Judge

and my short list

  • After – Hex - I had the (dis)pleasure of being a lowly extra on Warhorse a few years ago. Lying in trenches as an extra was bad enough and ever since I get really miserable when I think of The Great War. So thanks for re-miserying me :p
  • Ghost of a Smile – Stormcrow – cos I used to live next to Brooklands racetrack and heard the phantom race cars.
  • Mer-murings – Tisiphone - Full fathom five thy father lies...
  • All The Fun of the Fair – Nixie - loving Something Wicked This Way Comes which I am currently reading, and I have an obsession with carnival supernature anyway.
  • Girls and Boys Come Out to Play – Perpetual Man – some fantastic envy-inducing imagery.

My vote, after much wailing and rattling of chains goes to Perp for some beautiful imagery. Well done to everyone.

As always a very hard decision to narrow these down. I ended up listing the ones that hooked me with stories that I found interesting.

Shortlist:
Dream Walker – A Spirited Relationship
David Evil Overlord – What I did on my Halloween
AMB – The Caretaker
Mr. Orange – The Pleasure of Release
Marvin – Love Goes by Haps
Boneman – Keep Your Spirits Up

And my vote goes for:
Alchemist – The Ballad of Billy Ballantyne

Thanks for the listings Glen, Springs, Abernovo, Juliana, Phyrebat.

And many thanks to Remedy for the vote! (even ignoring the extra 'a' that I threw in there and my wife has been harrassing me about for weeks)

Merci for the shortlist, Victoria, Springs, and Remedy. Tough choices this month - lot of good ones - ended up voting for paranoid marvin for the well-executed and lyrical poem. Reminds me of a poem I wrote a long time ago with a similar structure & feel to it.
