Discussion thread -- seventy-five word challenge October 2013

Thankyou jonnyjet, sool, tywin, tdz and remedy for the shortlistings and big thanks (with hugs) to Juliana, PM and sinister42 for the votes.

My vote to follow; I do so enjoy a good ghost story.

Thanks for all the mentions, folks. Greatly appreciate it.
Thank you, Parson, Springs, Abernovo, Tywin, and thanks very much Anya Kimlin.
Victoria Silverwolf, that was a very clever review. Thank you.

My vote goes to Tywin's inspired tale of a ghostly streetwalker with a demon of a pimp.

Many thanks for all the shortlistings - Springs, Abernovo, Juliana, AnyaKimlin, Tywin, Chrispenycate and Mith for the Gold! What a thoroughly enjoyable challenge, this month!

Must vote soon... and write a 300 worder OMG!

And here I am again, just beat the edit deadline. I have 16 stories in my shortlist, that's one in three entries! And I left out some I really wanted to put in, becasue they didn't quite meet the twin subjects. This month, the poems were so damn good, all of them made it onto my list - working hard to get rhymes in in 75 words is a double challenge, not one I think I'd try. But you never know. Here's my list: shortlist Finalists (any of whom could have won, they were all fabulous, and I wanted five votes at least...)and *winner*

Springs
Victoria Silverwolf
Bowler 1 (that's horrible! I nearly left it out because it was so creepy!)
Ratsy
TDZ
Tywin
Paranoid Marvin
Starbeast
Hilarious Joke
Alchemist
AMB
Chrispenycate
Ursa Major
The Judge
Brev
*Dream Walker* whose protesting line "living challenged" made me laugh out loud, so the pleasure principle got the vote.

Thank you Johnnyjet for the long listing.
Perpetual Man and ratsy - thank you very much for the short listings.

And Mith, I am chuffed to have made your Gold List, thank you. :)

Tywin - regarding your additional "a"
I had down in my notes to take half a mark off you for that, but just couldn't bring myself to do it because of your awesome story. So you got the vote. ;)

wanted to say thankyou to victoria and starbeast for their lovely reviews of my story...
i am still flipping coins over the voting..
its shaping up to be another horse race with the judge and all ...
decisions decisions...

My thanks to Perp and Boneman for the mentions, and to Mr Orange for the vote. Glad you liked it. :)

So many great stories this month. Well done everybody!

My short listing:
Remedy - Pleasures Price
TDZ -Joint Tenancy
Tyson - Streetwalker
Perp -Girls and boys come out to play

With my vote going to Remedy!

Thank you to Victoria Silverwolf for the bronze status and to Phyrebat for the short listing and to Chrispenycate and Johnnyjet for the special mentions.

A nice solid (if nowhere near record breaking) 47 submissions this month and only 34 votes so far which, as three people voted without having submitted (many thanks Crystal Haven, Martin 321 and sooC) only half of those who did submit have yet given their various verdicts, leaving AMB, Andersson, Big J, chocoweeble, Culhwch, Hilarious joke, I Voyager, J Riff, jastius, MattC, Mirannan, paranoid marvin, reiver33, Starbeast, Stormcrow, The Judge & Ursa Major. Oh, the last pair are competitive brinksmen, each attempting to be the closest to the mark, but let not everyone else forget that GMT has not moved when the daylight did, and there's an hour less than you'd been trusting on…

Thanks to TDZ, JohnnyJet, Perpetual Man and Boneman, for noticing my piece; I will explain tomorrow, but don't think a piece of verse belongs in the 'improve your…' thread; it's too individual (which doesn't mean I'm scared of comments; I'll never be a poet but I do try to improve my verse, but it's very difficult to modify verse in a minor way).

It's taken me long enough to compose this that there are (hopefully) a couple of names to take off the list.

For me, this months' entries were really hard to choose between.

In the end I had to reduce my list right the way down to two entries which took unusual angles on 'pleasure' and introduced new 'ghost characters' as well as strong 'stories' and could easily re-told by candlelight tomorrow!

In the ensuing Apple Bob-off between Nixies ghostly Fair and Alc's wonderful Ballad, Nixie got my vote.

am still deciding chrispy.. have the pool down to five finalists .. argh...

DEO, you voted for me? oh, my.. thank you thank you.. that was so nice..

sigh .. thinking thinking...

... leaving... The Judge & Ursa Major. Oh, the last pair are competitive brinksmen, each attempting to be the closest to the mark...
Not competitive, just -- in my case, at least -- procrastinatative. And I'd forgotten the date, so thought the voting deadline was tomorrow, so you're lucky to see me here at all.

Anyway, like TDZ I had a bit of a problem this month, as for me too many excellent stories weren't in the genre of ghost stories as I would (perhaps narrowly) define it, but were only stories with ghosts in them ie using the idea of ghosts as an extra theme.

No short list, but runners up this month were Mr Orange with The Pleasure of Release and nixie and All the Fun of the Fair, but my vote goes to alchemist and The Ballad of Bobby Ballantyne -- witty and clever.

A special mention also to Andersson for The Seance, a good first story, and to Chris for his incredible poem Nine Points of the Law and the delicious pun in the title.

Ghostly thanks for the shortlistings/mentions Remedy, Phyrebrat, Chris, TDZ, ratsy (thanks for the kind words!), johnnyjet, Perp, Mr Orange and Boneman, and terrifyingly supernatural thanks to Aber, Karn, Parson, Mith and nixie for both the votes and the lovely comments which were very much appreciated! (Sorry about the nightmare, Mith...) Ooh, choccoweeble sneaked in under my radar. Thanks for the vote!

Thanks to TDZ, ratsy, johnnyjet, Perp, Mith, nixie, Boneman and stormcrow for the mentions/shortlistings.

And bigger thanks to The Judge for the vote. Writing poems can be painful stuff, but it's nice to see one come off.
