A big thank you to johnnyjet for the vote, and to Boneman for the mention. :)

My shortlist and top three. Vote went to alchemist.
Really enjoyed the entries this month!

Nixie
Springs
Mosaix
Hex
The Judge
Victoria Silverwolf
HareBrain
Alchemist

My thanks to Remedy, Tywin, ratsy and Juliana for the mentions, and to Glen for the vote. Was more than I expected for my cheeky 'who done it'. :D

I’d like to thank these likely suspects:

Starbeast, for the great listing :)

Remedy for the runner upmanship :)

And Johnnyjet for the longlisting :)

Will plead my case after the statute of limitations on voting expires.

Starbeast, Juliana and Tywin - thanks for the long listing. I had a massive allergic reaction at the weekend so will try and get to reading before the deadline.

Not a story in the bunch that I didn't like. I had a huge shortlist, even for me, but when I went back through it, I was able to thin it out a bit by way of eliminating some stories that I didn't feel were precisely *stories* in full. Very sad, but the shortlist ought to be less than half the entries. :D

In the end, all I could do was add to the already overwhelming total for Cul -- that was a story after my own heart, very like some I've written myself. I like when the bad guy gets it good.

Perp -- Dead Man's Secret
Remedy -- Silky Secret
*Culhwch -- We All Have Our Secrets*
johnnyjet -- A Cloud of Witnesses
Karn -- The Princess
Bob Senior -- The Return of the Tall Blonde
mosaix -- Through a Lens, Darkly
alchemist -- Telling Tales
Glitch -- The Murder Weapon
Harebrain -- Masquerade of Doom...
Hex -- Our Secret Overlords' Last Day
Boneman -- Listen, doo wah doo...
TJ -- Hercule To Her? Cool!

Ten in the 'short' list this time:- alchemist, Brev, Glen, HareBrain, mosaix, nixie (despite grammar), Spiegal, The Judge, TheDustyZebra (who dared to implicate Freda) and Tywin. I finally went for HareBrain's.

Thank you Mr. Orange for the mention, but that was not 'rather silly'; it was in the running for the silliest thing I ever wrote. And thanks for Perp and Starbeast for noticing it – and SB, if it had been three hundred words perhaps I could have fitted in a real detective rather than the most ineffective alternative in fiction.

Oh, and as it's the last day, the list of those who wroted but have not (yet) voted:-
Alex, The G and T, AnyaKimlin, Bob Senior, crow., Culhwch, farntfar, Glitch, HareBrain, jastius, Mith, paranoid marvin, Phyrebrat, Rafellin, reiver33, Rolynd, The Judge, Ursa major, WriterJosh. And all honour to abraves24,7, High Eight, SevenStars and stormcrow, for votes above and beyond the call of duty.

Grumbles off, complaining about name on poll: "Never panicked, how dare they suggest…"

I've been a bit quiet the last couple of weeks, due to quite a few things going on, one or two of them have actually even been pleasant :)

Have to say, thank you to Victoria and Jastius for the great reviews, always a pleasure to read nice things :D

Now to the voting list!

Listed in written order.

reiver33 ~ Dial 'M' For Mobius
Bowler1 ~ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
nixie ~ Who' Afraid
Culhwch ~ We All Have Our Secrets
mosaix ~ Through A Lens, Darkly
Parson ~ Almost Rich and Famous
Ursa major ~ The Psimple Art of Murder
Jastius ~ Time of the Wolf

I had a struggle which to cast my vote on, but eventually nixie won out. Her story reminded me of an advert for the Guardian newspaper a couple of years back where the three little pigs are accused of destroying their own homes for an insurance scam and framing the wolf for the crime. I loved that advert :D

Finding the winner of this month's challenge took a good deal of investigating. However, the suspects thinned, until there was only one entry that might fit the bill....

(In the following, each category is ordered by time of posting):

Honourable Mentions:
  • Deadly Whispers by martin321
  • Suspicious Characters by Abernovo
  • Quantity by farntfar
  • The murder weapon by Glitch
Runners Up:
  • A Study in Gender by Victoria Silverwolf
  • We All Have Our Secrets by Culhwch
  • Astonishing Detective Paperback Tale by Starbeast
Winner:
  • Masquerade of Doom: A Balthazar McSpanner Mystery by HareBrain

My thanks to Parson and stormcrow for the mentions.

My vote this month goes to The Judge. "Hercule to Her? Cool!" was clever, suspenseful, and funny. What more can you ask from 75 words?

Thanks for the mention, Ursa. :)
