Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE November 2013

Thanks for the listing, johnnyjet. :)

Thanks very much for the listing, springs! Not my usual kind of story - but I do love fruit-flavored Tootsie Rolls, and I have had them come up missing from time to time - thus an idea was born.

This month was even harder to call then usual. I found it impossible to make a shortlist. All the stories were excellent, and as a big fan of Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, I got a kick out of the nods that were passed around. But my vote ultimately went to The Judge for the inclusion of Poirot and Miss Marple, which I still laughed out loud about this morning when it popped into my head again.

Awesome entries all around!

My completely un-scientific compiling/voting method gave me this list of stories that stood out for me. I'm glad that the crowd took a little lighter approach than normal:

Anya Kimlin – Detectives in the Closet. Well, that certainly is a secret.
Remedy – Silky Secret
Glen – Secret Identity. Thank you Glen. I had to try toexplain to my wife why I was laughing at the laptop.
Brev – A Gut Instinct
Springs – Nothing to Trumpet About. Great visual
Culwch – We All Have Our Secrets
Johnnyjet – A Cloud of Witnesses
Mr. Orange – Night Terrors
HareBrain – Masquerade of Doom: A Balthazar McSpannerMystery. Silly story that made fun of several tropes. - VOTE
TDZ – Captain Obvious Across the Pond. Very timely story given the wanderings of ourconversation this month.
Alex – Untitled. Makes me feel like I should have thought of aClue based story.

My nominations (only four this time): -

Secret Identity by Glen - Silly!
Suspicious Characters by Abernovo - if only for the sheer nerve of getting Father Brown, Miss Marple and Lord Peter Wimsey into a 75-word story!
Telling Tales by Alchemist - Its difficult to do a serious SF detective story in 75 words, but Alchemist managed it very well.
Hercule to Her? Cool! by The Judge - I always suspected it.

And my vote goes to: - Alchemist.

The change of genre generated a lot of top stories this month. My favourites:

  • Perpetual Man - made so completely of Chandleresqueness it took me a while to figure out
  • Brev - lol. an unpleasant secret. ***VOTE WINNER***
  • Victoria Silverwolf - “By Jove!”
  • Tywin - great characters
  • Starbeast - crazy characters
  • Harebrain - I like a good McSpanner mystery
  • Boneman - “Ha ha.”

Thank you, thank you Victoria Silverwolf and Jastius for the reviews, martin321 for runner-up status, Boneman for tied for 1st place status (it’s a first for me!), Tywin for laughing at your laptop and making me laugh too, and High Eight for Silly status. That’s quite a haul and I’ll happily take that and scarper before the rozzers turn up.

Thanks for the mention Glen, I was wondering whether anyone would be able to make any sense of it, and I'm glad someone did!

Right, although the standard is always high, I thought this month was exceptional. Apart from the gibberish in the first entry ;) everything was magnificent. So many made me smile, smirk or had a twist I did not see coming that I just struggled to narrow things down.

Not so short list:

Glen
Martin321
Chris
nixie
Tywin
Hex
PM
Ursa

A very special mention to StarBeast, who made me laugh throughout his entry.

The terrific trio:
Victoria
Cul
BM

And after a lot of thought the vote went to Cul.
