Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE November 2013

Bob Senior -- Boils the hard-boiled 'tec yarn down even harder, until only the tough-as-nails interior remains.

Mosaix -- Observes the complete professional at work in a situation where the personal must not be allowed to interfere, with perhaps a nod to a famous story about a rear window.

Mischov -- Teases the reader with just the beginning of a complex tale of retribution.

Funnily enough I had the pants / trouser discussion yesterday in the office with a newly arrived Aussie and two Brits. I've been here long enough I have adapted to trousers but get mocked mercilessly when I go back to NZ and dare call pants trousers!

What was this thread about again?

All this begs the question:

Why are we bothering to laugh about the differences between American and British English when we could be mutually making fun of the Aussies?

i wouldn't tick them off tywin.. they have crocadiles, sharks and poisonous/venomous everything.. they have a thing that looks like a cute little cross between a duck and a teddy bear that is the only mammal in existence that is venomous.
you are a brave man...

alchemist -- Implies more than meets the eye in a subtle and moody way.

Starbeast -- Tosses logic and reality out the window in a knockabout farce where anything can happen.

RoninJedi84 -- Plays with the reader's expectations with a sudden change in tone.

Thanks for the review Victoria.

As always, mine would have made a better 100 word story :D (well, not always. Often, maybe)

Well i got my entry up.... i struggled a lot this month -not really my genre at all...

but it's done now so i can relax...

Been lurking lately, but I thought I'd give this one a go. It's from a novel I'm working on. Well, let it stand or fall by itself. :)

Not much time, but I'll make some quick comments.

Nixie: very well done. I enjoy retellings of well-known stories with new twists.

Culhwch: that's a good story. Begs for a fuller treatment.

Karn: I didn't see yours before I wrote mine last week. I swear. :) I like how you ended this one with a secret. Did anyone else see what the seelie saw?

darn it karn... you did write a story.. does that mean i am reviewing? well, i warned everyone.. (i apologize in advance..)

Perpetual man- Dead Man’s Secret
Classic film noir sound bites contribute to the authentically gritty flavour of this homage to the detective radio serials. A ghost reflects upon how his life's work met an untimely end through connivance and foul play; leaving him to haunt his own past with his regrets...

AnyaKimlin - Detectives In the Closet
Dragnet meets The Birdcage in this tenderly forthright tale of a forbidden relationship played out in stolen moments in a hostile world. The ironic emphasis of the chemical labels adds dimension and layers meaning into the star crossed lovers conversation.

Remedy - Silky Secret
This tale of the wrench out of control of a very controlled individual and his skilled attempt at hiding the pieces of his misstep gives us a glimpse of how short can be a fall from grace. From enforcing law and fighting crime, the protagonist now walks in the shoes of those he had brought to justice, and exhumes a piece of his own humanity even as he destroys through his own actions the ideals he loves.

Writer Josh- An Ethereal Client

In this tale of justice sought from beyond the grave, a hard-boiled detective finds he has one more surprise left in him as he meets his first spectral client.

Ratsy - Keeping the Heat Off
A beautiful widow contrives her own alibi in homage to the great beauties of the classic film mystery. Bacall, Stanwick, Davis and Kelly have all portrayed this lovely black widow whose tantalizing tale is so skillfully wrought.

Glen - Secret Identity
Glen is at his comedic best with this parody of a CSI episode gone wild... this sassy tale is of a serial killer with a sci fi bend as time travel is thrown into the mix, leaves a triple take as fingers are pointed in a finale with a full serving of wit to savor.

reiver33 - Dial M for Mobius

In a twilight zone-isque tale of time travel meets up with the classic Phillip Marlowe trope detective, a time slip spinning out of control spirals the two main characters in an endless loop. As the two protagonists never learn from their actions, in true Groundhog Day fashion they are doomed to repeat them.

Mith - Anything for Money
A Tale of Suspense indeed...this evocative portrayal of the Raymond Chandler mysteries emulates the flavour of those long ago radio days with its witty dialogue and quintessential details. This classic is brought back with a surprisingly sardonic twist.

martin 321 - Deadly Whispers
A detective investigates a murder victim he knows all too well. A crime of passion and a ghost’s chance of retribution lead to madness through this psychic setup in an ingenious delivery of C.S. PsI.

Thought I would jump in the deep end with mine, not a genre I'm used to writing but it was fun nonetheless. I particularly liked Harebrains story, and Spring's was a great bit of fun!

I'm liking a lot of what I'm seeing this month, some very off the wall stuff that I hadn't expected. Looks like there'll be a bit of a blonde off and I'm firmly in that camp. A lot of dead bodies knocking around, and hey, I've got a foot in that one too!

And isn't it especially nice how Jastius's reviews seem to go by the wayside?:mad::mad:

They were well thought-out. About like the ones that Perp used to do. It's good to see you've taken the time to do them, Jas. :)

wug ???
its okay karn.. it was supposed to be your job so they might still be afraid to look?
(not many people are following the thread is all karn... i think they haven't recovered from the kilt picture yet..)
