Discussion Thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- January 2014

Ooops. Did wonder if the popsicle was a line too far. But I had four words left....

I meant, really, it's not your favorite genre? :D

But you still had one word left. So much that could have been done, there.... (I didn't count, I'm just assuming you only added those three.)

A bit slow today, too much cheer last night?

I liked it Tywin. I've no idea if I'm on the money or not, but I don't really care as I had fun knocking my attempt together. No doubt tomorrow will be more active, when everyone has recovered.

Actually, Dark Fantasy and Grimdark are not one and the same thing ... not at all. Dark Fantasy is much older, for one thing, and is often more literary. Think H. P. Lovecraft or some of Angela Carter's reinterpreted fairy tales, rather than the new crop of "gritty" writers.

Dark fantasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But, as with all subgenres, definitions are up for interpretation by the individual reader or writer. And of course Tywin might have meant Grimdark after all.

That mirrors a concersation Mr Springs and I tonight about what books had been/were now stocked in Dark Fantasy. Anne Rice came up, as did the Grimdark stuff - I wonder is it a shifting category at the moment? It'll be interesting to see where it settles down after the GRRM surge. :)

Boy, this is going to stretch me. I will have to think in terms of dark fairy tales.

We've had a prediction of forty-two degrees celsius here on Saturday - I think I might need to inhabit a cold, dark place for awhile to escape from that...

New Month. New Year. New Challenge. New Avatar. New Comments:

Juliana - One of those annoyingly clever pieces that seems to effortless convey a larger story, while using so few words. When looking back it would be easy to believe that I had read something a lot longer. The opening sentence was beautifully visual, and the betrayal at the end was perfectly delivered, a nice little verbal knife in the back.

SB - Sometimes there are stories that leave me speechless - and laughing at the same time and SB is a master of this trick. No matter what the subject matter he ios always able to make me chuckle. In this instance I worry about m,y own interpretation of his tale, because once I worked out what I thought the horse bit meant, there was no going back. Naughty |Starbeast! Naughty! (Or perhaps naughty Perp...) As always pure entertainment.

Springs - A story that has something to say about some modern fiction perhaps, where something that might be considered just the way things were is still something else, and maybe that should not be forgotten. but at the same time manages to tell a tale that is both exciting and... and well, almost as bad as SB’s to be honest. (At least a proper lesson was taught...)

Bowler1 - Taken a s a disconnected story in it’s own right this is an excellent piece, that is both chilling and dark, something that needs to find it’s place in the world and does so, settling and a chilling predatory existence. But when looked at in the wider light, it drags Tolkien into a darker place, while fitting perfectly with what is there already.

Hope - A little story of things trying to survive against the cold, believing that the winter cannot last forever. There is some beautiful (well, in the writing sense) imagery of the creatures huddled beneath the bodies of their victims, and the hope that the cold will end, and with its passing will come freedom.

Mirannan - I liked the way that this drew on classic sources, and although I knew how it was going to end before I got there it did not detract from the chilly twist. A deal with demons should be a tricky thing, and this was the perfect deal in that sense. I loved the title too, perfect!

Nice stories, Juliana and Starbeast. Um, Grimdark is not my favourite genre. 'Nuff said. :D

Thanks Springs. You dreamed up a nice one too.

Dark Fantasy, as I thought it was defined, meant fantasy with forbidden or evil elements added. Whereas (in my mind), Grimdark would be a complete horror story with no happy endings.

After posting, then reading the definition on Wikipedia, I feel I'm within the dark realm boundaries. I've read and seen countless movies that were Dark Fantasies, and the majority of them had a happy ending.

(whinny - cough, cough) Excuse me, I had a frog in my throat. Thank you Perpetual Man for such a complimentary review. With only 75 words, I tried not go too far off the deep end, since this is a family sight. But, I went as far as I could go with 75 words and tried to relay my tale with as much fantasy and darkened elements as I could muster. Editting all of the descriptive ******* and *******.

Is it getting hot in here, or is it just me? Anyway....

It's odd how my story came about. I looked the challenge's genre and theme, then I looked outside at the falling snow, then I glanced at my avatar, and my brain popped a tarty idea from my mental toaster.

Cool avatar. I'm looking forward to your tale.

*steals Starbeasts toast*
I also enjoyed the way you and spring twisted humor from your dire-stories.

Yay... Perp is back. A fair review, thank you. Do you find your avatars online, or design them yourself?

I find them online. I would love to say I had the talent to design something like that, unfortunately I don't.

And my pleasure as far as the comments go.
