Discussion Thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- January 2014

Just drove from Jackson County, Wyoming (About 2 and a half feet of snow on the ground) to Comanche County, Oklahoma (high of 60 degrees today). Hopefully won't kill my inspiration here.

Thank you Victoria and SB, for your reviews.

You're welcome Bowler1.

Seconded. :)

Aww, aren't you sweet. Thanks Springs.

I am currently unable to convince myself that cold is a bad thing.

Thank you for the reviews, Perpetual Man and Starbeast.

You're welcome TitaniumTi. Cold isn't bad, extreme cold is.

Starbeast, you're very quick off the mark - thanks so much for the great words.

You're very welcome Boneman. I was so quick, I misspelled one of my favorite words, "chaos".

Monday the high is going to be -6 Fahrenheit with a 20 -30 MPH wind. Cold is a very bad thing!! Give me 110 any day.

Hot or cold, it doesn't matter to me. Extreme weather makes me feel alive. I shoveled my driveway this morning, and it was -5F outside. But I am intellegent enough to go inside when I begin to feel the temperture start to bite.

I also prefer 110F. Despite my flippancy, I do appreciate my good fortune in living in a place where people rarely die of either heat or cold.

Sadly, I live where people do die of extreme weather. And where I live, it can get either beyond 100F, or subzero below 0F. It's the midwest, so if you don't like the weather, just a few hours and it will change quickly.

I'll agree that struggling against the weather to do something essential is very invigorating. I'm just too devious for my own good in thag regard. Finding every loophole not to have essential things for which to struggle.

Heh heh. I like your playfulness Hope.

I don't recommend anyone to endanger themselves in any shape or form. But I'm the type of guy who usually tries to ignore bad weather (but prepared & within reason).

I hope you have a good scarf. One that keeps moisture off your face without letting the air suck you dry is an essential, yet tricky find.
I made mine. Keeps my face nice and warm when I go walking.

The posts are coming thick and fast now. All the hangovers must cured by now, although, I'm going to do some work on one again tonight.

Well said!! It's weather like mine and to some degree like your's which makes us remember that humans are not ideally suited to wide range of climates. It is only as society developed that we figured out ways of dealing with them, more or less successfully.

Parson. I wont be comming to dinner.
-6 sheesh. We've been in the mid to high 20's

Ah, Hope, and we were going to have charcoaled polar bear steak just for your benefit.:p:D

telford -- This action-packed sword and sorcery saga forces the reader to remember that good is not always destined to triumph.

Hex -- Heart-breaking sorrow fills this emotionally powerful horror story, which depicts the universal experience of mourning.

I live in a poorly circulated house, in the basement of a poorly circulated house. in the backest corner of the basement of a poorly circulated house. If I were to close my door, my room would never get above 65F
I have poor circulation. I have poor circulation and an inability to make or retain body fat. I have poor circulation, no insulation and a ravenous metabolism which makes 70F feel cold enough to need a turtle neck, 75F chill enough for a sweater, 80F almost comfortable. My feet are chronically blue or purple with cold. Even in the height of desert summer. My only comfort is 120-130F showers. I might drop them as far as 100 in the summer, out of courtesy for the rest of the house.

No circulation.
No insulation.

I am a tropical beast trapped in a cold, temperate, hole.

Feel free to use me as inspiration, if you cannot pity my poor cold bones.
have you thought of flying south for the winter for the birds, hope?
mail
:D

Ive thought of moving to the tropics!
I'll be moving coastward sometime in 2014 and am finding that thought warm enough to survive this one last winter on.

Thank you for your concern Hope, don't worry, I bundle up well. I'm very acquainted with extreme weather, and especially, subzero temperatures. It's supposed to be really bad tonight and Monday, I choose not to go out after dark. I'm snug, I ate dinner while watching the 2011 movie, The Thing. That was fun, and now, I'm here. :)

Cold/Dark Fantasy
(part three)

Telford - A brave warrior stands up against a nightmare being that is cunning and evil. Fiendishly fantastic and definately a darkened icy treat. Nicely executed.

Hex - You've conjured a hellish tale, that was written in the blackest ink, that foretells a story of tearful sorrow. Well written and deeply grim. Good Stuff.

Martin321 - This offering slowly increases with intensity, then at it's end, it smashes you like a spiked mace. An enchanting tale that creeps up on you like spider.

Howdy,
I'm in trouble, it's -18, wind chill -47 and I can't come up with a COLD story.
I tink mi brane is freeze!

Karn – a very interesting story, that captures the stark fear of the protagonist perfectly, while tantalising you with hints of more; just what it is that Jack has done to warrant the unleashing of the furies? Excellent.

BigJ – An epic fantasy told in few words, a remarkable feat replete with its own history and enticements all of its own. A richness enhanced by the use of names and appropriately placed words, and a suitably heroic ending.

telford – a rather chilling story that really explores the concept of over-confidence and charging into a situation unprepared. Gives the truth to the old saying about fools rushing in where angels fear to tread.

Hex – a chilling, brilliantly emotive piece that is cold in more ways than one. There is some ‘beautiful’ writing that evokes bitter but true images, through the sparse use of words. A true example of a well-conceived and executed story.

martin321 – a modern fairy tale that captures the beat of a fable perfectly. It is told in such a fashion that it makes you believe in the fantasy before delivering you that perfect, horrific twist.

Remedy – some beautiful use of words to convey a story that is equally a character creation exercise, delivering a character that almost feels alive, while being so cold. The final line is as chilling as it is cold. Perfectly delivered.

Tywin – A grim dark ale that captures the depth of greed perfectly and just how well thought out a premeditated killing can be. This is a well-constructed tale, told spot on of a man who believes he can get away with murder.
