Ah, I thought it was that (though I can't remember which is which). Confused me as a kid that some books used double quotes and others single, but I think single quotes are more common these days (so probably American).The ' thing is a Us/UK thing, nothing more.
I started out using double quotes, but switched to single quotes later - as Jo said though, I think agents/publishers are fine as long as you're consistent with one or t' other, and there are plenty of novels published with both.been using double quotes for dialogue for years
