Bitter sweet ending? (spoilers)

Jon and Dany will be opponents in the final great conflict. There is a savage twist somewhere in there that Martin is waiting to pull. Is a Dany really one of the good guys? At this stage I would put Jaime in that bracket before her. Remember she has burned a path of death and destruction across a continent, being directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of thousands. I wonder...

Thinking about it, Dany and Jon are not going to kill each other, but marry. That's how the song ends. I don't think that can be contested.

GRRM has already more than underlined that Targ siblings marry. So would Jon be against marrying Dany if he found out she was his half-sister? Probably not - it's a point of note in AGoT that he was initially attracted to his half-sister Arya. Jon has also been shown to be attracted to kick-ass women, cf Ygritte - and she was a forbidden love, too.

IMO too much of the story and backstory foreshadows that Jon and Dany will become a couple.

2c.

Even if they marry I'm sure a few chapters can be packed in after that for a little more bitterness in the ending..
A happy ending would be in some ways a great contrast to most of the story, but because of that it may not fit well. A too good to be true type of feeling.

That may be his only purpose in the finale but the murder of Tywin and his meeting with Dany have certainly had a big influence to the plot. In some ways he has been fortunate to survive as long as he has.

i think this is probably the most likely ending.

tho, keeping in mind, Dany is his Aunt, not his half-sister. And Dany isn't particularly kisck-ass. I still believe that they'll be two heads of the dragon. The incestuous three heads should then include Sansa as the third. Keeping the Ice and Fire Balanced.

I thought the Ice referred to the Walkers and the lands beyond the wall, while the Fire referred to the Dragons and possibly the south/the Targs. I don't think Starks would count as providing Ice to this balance, if balance is needed for the riders. The fire (dragons/Targs/south) have to push the Ice (White Walkers) firmly back beyond the wall.

GRRM has stated that Tyrion is his favorite character, so maybe, just maybe, Tyrion will survive to the end. I really hope so.

I really hope so as well. I am a little worried that Martin isn't the type to play favourites though. I would say Tyrion has as much (or as little) chance of living til the end as any other character.

I know some of us are watching the TV series to learn how this whole volume ends. However, TV and film people have a funny habit of messing with the stories - especially endings, to make them more interesting for TV viewers.

If GRRM ever does actually finish writing ASoIaF I wouldn't be surprised if some of the differences to the TV series are major - ie, to the extent where Jon might really die in one, but not the other.

Just a thought. :)

I wonder if another bitter/sweet element might be that by the end of the series, all three of Dany's dragons are dead - but in a final scene, a clutch of dragon eggs are found that were laid by one of them.

Just a thought. :)

TBH, even if it is exactly the same regarding the what happens (which I very much doubt it will be as I very much agree that it will be very different), the circumstances which lead to it and characters themselves will not be.

My gut feeling is that Jon will have to kill Dany to refoge Lightbringer.

Brian, I think that the show runners and Martin have been in communication and that the endings will be identical, but as Anushka said, the pads that they will take to get there will be very different.

I think Arya finally gets reunited with her pack. I think she'll meet at least two of the following people... Rickon, Jon, Sansa, and Stoneheart. She loves Jon. She might miss Rickon. She might feel protective of Rickon and Sansa. On the other hand, if she finds Sansa playing the game on Littlefinger's side, she might be tempted to kill her.

Wow, that quote is from 2014! Impressive.

True. They may not want the bittersweet finale, though the tone of the show up to this point does not suggest they pull punches.

As for Martin finishing the book, I don’t think so. His story is told, his twists revealed. What better way to zap the excitement out of writing the story....?

I've got to agree with zmunkz...I think the chances of Martin finished are slim to none. He's struggled to maintain focus/enthusiasm for the writing these last ten years and once the tale is out there...bastardised or not...I can't see that improving.

zmunkz, you are my new favorite poster... after my own impressive self of course.

I have also predicted that Loras is faking wis wounds and is off to woo Dany.

...that Rhaegar, Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion, Viserys, Jon, and Dany are all the offspring of the Mad King.

...that Varys is actually a Targaryen ******* or Blackfyre heir.

...that Dany is the valonqar.

...and that Jon and Dany will marry to unify the realm politically, but that Jon will also marry Sansa in order to have an heir.

Now, I dunno that any of these can really occur.

All we know for certain is that Varys isn't the hair apparent....
