Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE May 2014

Thanks for the honorable mention Ursa

Congrats Alchemist!

Congratulations alchemist.

I've enjoyed my first 75 word contest and I'm already looking forward to the next :)

We'll see about that in a couple of days :D

In my excitement, I forgot my manners. Thanks to Cat's Cradle, Khayos, springs, Teresa, TJ and Ursa for the votes, and also to those who mentioned my story, and thanks all for the congratulations

You know how some people pronounce film as filəm? (Or how we add vowels where a foreign language doesn't: for example, Srbija becomes Serbia.) Given that the combination "sg" isn't an obvious diphthong, it calls for a vowel (and probably a schwa), giving Fisəg. This isn't a million miles from the word, fizzog. And 'fizzog' means 'face', an appropriate name for someone in PR.

Thanks Ursa!

Researching genres now. There are some scary/interesting things out there...

Many thanks TDZ for the shorter listing. Much appreciated.

Hearty congratulations ALC!

Look forward to seeing what 'interesting' theme you can come up - I hope it's nothing to do with ironing shirts!

Well done Alchemist, and my thanks to Anyakimlin,Starbeast, Bowler1,and TheDustyZebra for the listings! My own vote wentto Culhwch, with Victoria silverwolf, AunDoorback, AnyaKimlin and Parson as runners up.

I can't wait to find out what the next challenge is.....?

StilLearning: How pleasant to find a runner-up listing at this late date. Thank you so much.

I'm a bit late to to this thread (some may say fashionably so, unless they knew me), but I wanted to make sure that I thanked mosaix, Mr Orange, paranoid marvin and StilLearning for the votes last month. I was absolutely shocked when I logged in to check who won to see I'd somehow made a late run! So thank you, guys, and thanks to everyone else who shortlisted or mentioned my story!

And congrats to alchemist as well, of course!

As we move into June's challenge, I thought I'd just rush through my entry this month:

All’s Wells That Ends Wells Thing the title speaks for itself but you never know...

On Christmas Eve 1897 (The year War of the Worlds was firs published) the
Martians invaded. Huge tripods, heat-rays (a direct reference to WotW) that burned everything -
Ironclads (Wells wrote a short story - The Land Ironclads where he described these machines, basically tanks years before they were invented) and boats, even mighty
Thunderchild (A boat that makes a stand against the Martians in WotW)- scoured just like the planet itself.

In a last ditch attempt to save Earth author Herbert George Wells (better known as H G Wells author, considered by many to be the father of Science Fiction)
used the Travellers machine (from Well's novel the Time Machine, he is never given a name, just the Traveller - a bit like Doctor Who ;))
to send his friend professor Griffin (The name given to the protagonist in Wells The Invisible Man)
back to 1895 (The year in which The Time Machine was published).
There he seeded the world with microbes particularly lethal to the aliens. (In the novel the Martians are eventually beaten by bacteria native to Earth, alien to Mars to which they have no immunity.)

The writer and the Invisible Man. (The name of the novel and the secret of the character Griffin)

The Martians never saw him coming. (A very bad punchline)

Thanks for the runners-up Ursa :)

Congratulations to Alc - and an excellent choice of theme/genre!

Once again I had to be away from the computer for a week and missed all the drama.

Many deserved congratulations to alchemist.

Some of you may be aware that I generally thank those kind enough to vote for my entries via private messages. To those who have chosen not to receive such messages, allow me to offer my gratitude.

On to June!
