DISCUSSION -- June 2014 75 Word Writing Challenge

Alright, good stuff this month, more so as I thought it a tough theme. I don't mind a tough theme, keeps us on our toes.

Anyway, mentions. Telford, Karn, Victoria (you came close to a vote), alchemist, Crystal, Glen (well, it was a RAY GUN) and paranoid marvin.

My vote goes to Starbeast. If you'd dropped a RAY GUN into the OK corral gun fight you be my hero forever, but you didn't, you picked a rubbish gattling gun, so a vote is the best you get. Something to think on next time.

Right... I'm off to shoot something.

Thank you so much for the votes, CC and Victoria. And the comments.

I voted for Glen, because his 75 worder was perfect throughout, and it made me laugh out loud.

I also thought JonH's was excellent.

(I am especially, especially delighted to have got votes this month because after I'd posted, I convinced myself I'd been too obscure and depended too much on people knowing things about the period, so thank you even more)

So far, I've narrowed it down to two countries (maybe three, knowing your interests), so you're going to have to tell me afterwards!

Here are my honourable mentions:

BigJ - A lesson from the lamb
Mr Orange - Smoothing over a wrinkle
Bowler1 - Your Country Needs You
lonewolfwander - A King's Secret
Alc - Barbarossa

But my vote goes to:
Chrispenycate - Eureka

Sorry Victoria Silverwolf - yours was a lovely written story, but the tech in me screamed noooooo.... not because of what you wrote, but what tech was left out.

Shortlist:
Farntfar
Cat's Cradle
Victoria Silverwolf
Bowler
Mosaix
Tywin
Glen
Perpetual Man lol
Hex

The winner is Bowler this month as I managed to laugh, cry and bite my lip all in one small piece. It is so topical right now.

I'm glad to see so many folks got into the spirit of the challenge this month, but even more glad that that you actually found it challenging :D

Shortlist

Telford
Victoria Silverwolf
Juliana
Hex

And the vote goes to...

Juliana, for, amongst other things teaching me some history.

And thanks to those who mentioned my story this month!

A comment like that Anya far outweighs any possible vote, thank you so much. But... a vote is a nice sweetener to top it off too.

Thank you Serendipty and your welcome Alchemist.

Challenging it was! And just so you know, you've been added to my list of people for whom never to vote.... :D

A lot of them have been challenging and inspired some of our best stories.

But ... maybe it is time to remind everyone that in the beginning the first post always said that winners would choose the "theme or genre" so that winners didn't have to try to think up both. I actually think it's good that it's been changed to "theme and genre" but maybe winners are feeling pressured to come up with something original for both, and there is no need for anyone to feel that way. The genre can be as general as "Fantasy or Science Fiction" or as specific as "Steampunk" but there is nothing wrong with picking a genre that has been used many times before. The originality there might then go into the theme.

For that matter, there is no reason not to recycle a theme that did well, only with a different genre.

I liked the theme it has lots of possibilities. My mind just went to the "noted whore" who claimed her child was sired by the Wizard of Gordonstoun.

Although not sure I should have called her Peggy Frigg. I have no clue as to name or sex of the child in real life.

Dammit! Knew I should have gone for the genre of "Sword and Planet" :p

In actual fact, I thought of using that as the genre when it was my turn. Then I went for Magical Realism, which, going by the reactions of everyone at the time, may have been an even worse choice.

I think I would enjoy Sword and Planet, but I may well be alone in that.

To be honest, for myself, if I were ever to win again, I wouldn' be goin' with yer newfangled young'un genres, don' ye know? I be after settin' up fer an ol' classic that be after lettin' all take a heapin' o' breath in relief. :D

Seriously, though, I think it has actually been nearly forever since we have seen a simple, classic Fantasy or Science Fiction genre chosen. We've had Steampunk, Historical Fiction, Cyberpunk, Alternative History, god knows all. But I think I had more fun with the classics. I think it is one major reason why I have only been going along halfheartedly at best, and often only at the insistence you all you guys. When can we get back to basics? :(
