DISCUSSION -- January 2015 300-word Writing Challenge (#16)

Phew - Hectic month! But I finally managed to get my first 300 worder past the word pixies - Hurrah!
Some great stories already. I am surprised that an old tree stump (even such a nicely carved one) can generate such brilliant ideas. (y)

Sancho, that's my favorite thing about the challenges; reading all the different approaches.
You are right, where some see a portal to other worlds, others see Giants and Dead wood sprites! I thought that my dimensional stasis field would be a stretch but it seems to fit right in. :alien:

Me too. But it's true of all the challenges. The breadth of ideas that come out of a picture or a theme is astounding.
And I know a lot of people deliberately write their stories before reading anyone else's. So it's not because they're looking to be different from what others have already written. We're all just crazy in our own special way. :)

Liking the craziness

Thanks, Victoria, for the nice review!

Very true, farntfar & Sancho, we all have our own unique craziness. That's an innate quality of being science fiction & fantasy fans!

Oh lawd... I just realised I only have a week to get my 300 in and I am absolutely museless at the moment. I don't have one - not one - idea about this. I'm reminded of things by the picture (which is great, btw) but spinning them into a story is a different matter.

My first 300 worder in. Thats daunting, its so much harder than the 75 worders in my eyes. 300 words is almost a page of writing and I found myslef getting carried away with it. Though as given me chance to create some races and ideas for some SF and fantasy stories in the future.

Unfortunately, we've had to remove an entry for being over 300 words. It goes without saying that we never like doing this to someone's hard work, so please, those left to post, be sure to take care. Don't rely solely on a computer to count the words -- double-check manually.

The fault was my own. When I manually counted I obviously miscounted won't happen again. Besides I am still counting it towards my new years resolution. Its going to read Jan: DNS/F/Q but damn it I am counting it.

Thanks Juliana, if I made just one person chuckle then I consider that a success.

It's a fine story, Moonbat! Beautifully written and really effective! CC

Azzagorn, believe me, the same thing happened to me with the very first 300.

It's a lesson to be learned, to be sure. And now I really like to not only not use contractions at all in the challenges, but also try to leave some leeway. :)
