DISCUSSION -- January 2015 300-word Writing Challenge (#16)

Yay, thanks Juliana and willwallace for the mention/short list. Was worrying my first entry would slip through hated and ignored. So, that's a relief :)

Some seriously cool stories, lots that hover around a similar theme, I guess the picture awakens something ancient in us all.

I groaned when I read the last line of the last entry, I should have known the build up would all be for a pun!

My short list includes, Cascade, Ratsy, Karn, Sancho, and JoanDrake,
My votes went to Cats Cradle, Reiver33 and Phyrebrat - great stories all of them.

Thanks for all the mentions, and thanks to Kerrybuchanan, Cascade and ddawson for the votes. :D

Thanks for the mention Anne Martin and to Moonbat for the shortlisting.
Special thanks to ddawson for the vote.

I have my dinner, duvet and support gonk and am working my way through the stories.
They're really good...I might be a while

BigJ -- With the haunting rhythm of an ancient chant, this tragic and moody epic stirs the soul.

TheDustyZebra -- Making use of a famous ballad as a starting point, the author brings its characters to life through the use of evocative details.

Rafellin -- The slowly building tension of a suspense novel can be found in this compelling story.

The Judge -- Through the use of the deceptively simple language of a folk tale, the author creates a world and those who inhabit it.

Culhwch -- Realistic dialogue and descriptions are spun into a nightmare of cosmic proportions.

mosaix -- Richly detailed characterization is cleverly used to lead the reader to an unexpected conclusion.

Ursa major -- A touch of wit and wordplay adds spice to this imaginative, epic fantasy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My votes simply went to the three stories I thought were the best written. Three very different stories, too.

"Maybe Tomorrow" by holland

"It Sings" by Rafellin

"Pillar of the Community" by The Judge

Big thanks to Juliana, Storyteller, KerryBuchanan and Anne Martin for the Mentions and to Rafellin for the vote.

Thanks so much for the shortlisting Kerrybuchanan! I tried something a little outside of my usual box and wasn't sure it turned out, so it's nice to have a mention! :)

Also, your welcome to those who have thanked me for mentions/votes. Everyone wrote really great stories, I enjoyed reading them all! (LittleStar, I liked the tone and descriptions used in your story, particularly in the opening/closing of the gate.)

Ye gods, a trey of votes. Thank you, Victoria. And also thank you for the review.

Thank you for the vote and for the kind words, Victoria. :)

And also, thank you Denise Tanaka, for another vote that I just now realized I have :D

The strength of these challenges, I believe, is best seen by who doesn't get a vote or a mention. All great entries, again, but I can't mention all 39 entries. Can I??? Anyhoo, honorables:
Springs - AB Watts - Will Wallace - Juliana - Reiver - Karn - Johnny Jet - Sancho - Holland - Moonbat - Beasty - The Storyteller - Rafelin - TJ - Culhwch and Mosiax. And so many more on my mind. Sigh.
After hours of deliberation, and twelve finalist, I finally voted for CC - Jastius and Dusty.
Great month everyone. (Sorry I missed it)

It's too hard...I think culling and then voting are the real challenges in these contests. I had three probable votes last night, and then read through my finalists list again today, and now there are two new people in my voting list. And my lists for this post included 22 stories, which seems mad, so I've shortened that too...apologies to any not mentioned--really any story in this quarter's challenge is worthy of listings, and votes.

Honorable mentions: springs, kerry, Victoria, Juliana, Littlestar, Anne Martin, johnnyjet, The Storyteller

Shortlist: willwallace, Glen, Rafelin

Finalists: Cascade, farntfar, Perpetual Man, Moonbat, The Judge

Votes: farntfar, Perp, TJ.

Best of luck in the voting to all entrants! CC

ps--OMG! I've got four votes! Thank you to the kind folks who voted for me, and to the equally kind people who listed my story! How exciting! :)

Thank you, Cascade, The Storyteller and Kerrybuchanan for the mentions and shortlists :)

Now I must separate the wheat from the chaff... if only there was any chaff! ;)

What? You voted for me. Thank you so much, Cat's.
Now go and see a doctor at once, before it gets any worse.

:) You're welcome! No doctor appointments available for months though, farntfar. I really liked your story...the ending, in particular, is one of my several favorites in the challenge. This might be a lame explanation, but I really felt what your character was saying.
