DISCUSSION -- April 2015 300-word Writing Challenge (#17)

It is looking very close indeed, a lot of people on 7 and 8 votes leading the way.

I'm more than happy to volunteer my services in hunting down members who have not already voted - an offer made to the sound of a RAY GUN powering up.

Oh, they've got days yet, the:- crystal haven, Culhwch, jastius, mosaix, ratsy, The Judge, TheDustyZebra and Ursa major, who haven't yet voted.
And:-
A. Fare Wells, Bowler1, BluePhoenix711, Denise Tanaka, Jennifer L. Carson, Mr Orange and Rafellin have all voted without submitting (assuming I've got my charts right which isn't certain) so we're very close to a balance.

Yay, a hit list, while nodding and smiling at a very nervous looking Ratsy.

An option to join a lynch mob is there, but only after you have voted, as it's that type of lynch mob (a very civilised "we have already voted" mindless mob).

What I want to know @chrispenycate is can you tell (by use of your exhaustive statistics) who the vengeful 8 (entered but not voted) might vote for when/if they do vote, therefore predicting who our eventual winner will be?

I am merely a humble (occasionally) archivist, no diviner to predict what people might decide, nor even less a spin doctor to influence them in said decision. Furthermore, I have no record of people's past voting records, and am inordinately proud that there is so little 'clique' voting - so many sites I visit occasionally would by now be trapped in the 'I'll vote for you if you vote for me' mentality, which you see practically no evidence of here.

So I have absolutely no more idea than anybody else who might receive those long pondered-over votes.

Hears the unmistakable sound of bowler's Rayguns pounding out a rhythm upon the jungle drums off in the distant chrons 300 acre wood jungle... Tsks.. Bowler is once again fomenting mutiny..

Man the barricades! The natives are restless!

Winnie the pooh collects up his empty sticky honey pots and Tigger prepares to bounce.

Hides behind the "I'm busy writing my may challenge sign.."
With the hastily scrawled note ... "And slamming into shape my camp nanowrimo 268,572 word non-opus.." added onto the bottom.

Look if you give me seven votes i could finish right now..
Unless you want me to pull a springs? Watches them all run away in terror.
(Springs, you full well know that its usually Gary that votes for only one story.. And nobody says anything because its Gary, Mr sexyboots himself. So next time borrow his boots first...)

Though seriously.. Ennie meenie miney moe.. Is not narrowing my selections down enough.

Goes away grousing about darn brilliant witty chrons writers ... Impossible choices..
Rereads selections and giggles and then Cries at the sad ones.. Roots for the heroes.. And some of the villains..
Oohs and Ahs at the nuances.. And tears more hair out trying to decide...

Just seven little votes..? Please? Bald is so not a good look..professor x withstanding..

I have loved reading all these stories and found it very difficult to put them into longlists, shortlists, and votes. They all seemed to deserve a mention. Well done everyone. :)

Juliana - Whisper in the Wind
Tywin – The Ace
Ratsy – Too Late
Glen - Derelict
Venusian Broon - Things that die hard

Longlisted:
Willwallace – Passage
Victoria Silverwolf - The Survivor
Cascade – Economy

Thank you johnnyjet for the longlisting, Starbeast for the honourable mention, Ashleyne. B. Watts, Holland, Moonbat and Kerry for the shortlisting and Jo for the Like. I really appreciate all of them.

And a big thank you to Victoria Silverwolf, Starbeast, Remedy and Ashleyne. B. Watts, for the great reviews.

I hope I haven't missed out anyone.

Humph... alright then.

I've been watching the Bear for years waiting on my opportunity to blast some fur, but it's never yet happened. The last minute wonder, under the wire before the last bell tolls, it all adds up to the same. The Bear is a countdown master... yet to be foiled. Still, this could be my chance.

Once again I had a hard time keeping to a shortish shortlist, and a number of good stories got booted into the long grass purely because I had to keep the numbers down somehow (though in one case it was because to my mind there was no SFF element in the story, excellent though it was). Anyway, the list:

Cascade -- Economy
Glen -- Derelict
johnnyjet -- The Last Flight of AIbel 7
Juliana -- Whisper in the Wind
Luiglin -- Beyond
marmalade -- Untitled
mosaix -- Learning Curve
Perpetual Man -- A Reminder of Guilt
Phyrebrat -- The Herald
Ursa -- Burning Devotion
Venusian Broon -- Things that die hard
Victoria -- The Survivor

Choosing from that lot was even harder. After a lot of thinking and faffing about and changing my mind, my votes went to Glen for his disturbing Derelict which haunted me from the first read, to Ursa for his tale of unholy oil, and Victoria for her angelic Betty, with johnnyjet, mosaix and Perp as their runner-up understudies. Ursa also collects the cup for the best title this quarter, and TDZ for the best use of a famous quote (that's charity** for you...)

I'm athrill, blissed-out, charmed, delighted and ecstatic that my alphabetty story got so much attention, but also abashed, bewildered, confused, discombobulated and not a little embarrassed in view of the strong competition it faced. Awestruck and blushing thanks for the hon mentions/shortlistings CC, Starbeast, Ashleyne, Juliana, Moonbat, and Phyrebrat (I think that's everyone), and crazy, delerious and enraptured thanks for the votes Cascade (and further thanks for the kind words), telford (ditto), johnnyjet, alchemist, Bowler, crystal, and for the stealth votes Cul, marmalade and BluePhoenix. All greatly appreciated.

** with luck Parson will drop by, so someone else might get that.
