DISCUSSION -- July 2015 300-word Writing Challenge (#18)

I have a story sitting at 299 words, and several other ideas to pursue. I've been seeking inspiration for short stories recently, without a spark, but Holland's great photograph has inspired so many (and such varied) ideas.

This will be my very first 300-worder, and I couldn't be more excited. The photo sparked a full idea almost immediately, and this creative forcefulness is what finally pushed me into deciding to enter the contest, which I wasn't planning on doing. Good one holland.

Got an idea. Hoping its not the same as everyone else's idea!!!

Yeah, this. When I get an idea based on a pic I always think: "oh that's so obvious, I bet everyone's got that idea." And yet, when you read the stories, it's a veritable cornucopia of imagination.

Yup. I hadn't worried about this in the 75-worder because the theme can be so broad. Basing a story on a picture feels more limiting and the spectrum of where ideas can go seems diminished. But if DG says that's not the case, I'll sleep easier. Indeed, I think my story will also be similar to many others, which fills me with face-melting dread. We will see.

I'll go out on a limb and say that in-laws just about HAS to be hyphenated. And would count as one word, as neither makes sense on its own.

Note, people -- the fact that something requires hyphenation does not always mean it will count as one word in that construction! If in doubt, please do ask a mod and give us an excuse to eat cake and mull it over in the staff room.

I'm coming up blank for picture related ideas. Very nice picture, but I keep rounding back down to a mishmash of "War Of The Worlds" and "Flipper Saves The Day".
