DISCUSSION -- July 2015 300-word Writing Challenge (#18)

Story done, now fermenting.

Excellent photo, BTW.

I have my story, written out and word checked several times, but i also have a few hypenated words I need confirming which could mean extra editing is needed. I've never had this problem before, I've always only used straighfoward hyphens, do I do this here, or in a PM?

PM a mod. There's normally a box on the forums main page showing which ones are currently online.

I always count such words as two, just for security even if I know they are valid as one word. Builds some security into your word length! And always good to have a few words spare, in case you spot the need for something extra.

Oh and I definitely don't trust the algorithms of the wordcounters; for this months 75, my word 2013 counter was telling me I had written 73 words, but I kept counting 74. It drove me mad, because of this mismatch...till I finally quit on the grounds that me or my computers counting never got over 75 :D

Same here. But sometimes it's just so tempting to want to add that one word that (you are positively sure) will give your story that whoooooole new dimension *rolls eyes*. It is then that you have to make a choice in this diabolical gamble, something not even Sophie would wish on her worst enemy.

The Challenge thread is now open. :)

Time, for those of you ready to post, to do a final word count.... ;)

I'm in. An attempt at a sort of nursery rhyme/fable. Probably bad form and punctuation but I poetry for me is normally limited to haiku (which I love). It reads like a primary school level effort lol.

do a final word count
More like ten final word counts! :)
It looks like a nice start to the challenge...five entrants so far! I'm happy to have a story in this company of tales. This, though, is the only part of the challenge I do not enjoy...that hour window after you've posted where you can go back and fiddle with the story...and when you have to worry about word count. After the hour's passed, it feels as though there's no pressure, and just fun left in the challenge. I'm looking forward to reading all of your stories!! Good luck with your individual muses, CC

Luiglin - Be careful what you yearn for

The rise and fall of a sorcerer rings out from this rhythmic fable. At times a Dr. Seuss-like element gifts a smile, setting our imagination to work. Culminating in a beautifully tragic end. Melodic Magic

Telford – Entanglement

Telford presents ourselves, humans, in poignant harsh truth. Shrugging off the teachings of a better way in that truly human flaw; arrogance. A suspenseful ending points us towards a thoughtful title. Karmic Crusade

Ashleyne. B. Watts - The Pipes, The Pipes

Urban fantasy grips and intrigues in ABW’s offering. Misdirection conveys an almost matrix-like feel as we follow prophetic instruction. But something higher is at work as family members reunite in a just cause. Metallic Mystery

TitaniumTi – *untitled*

TT weaves a tender relationship between mothers in the face of a last stand. With the backdrop of a major event, we find hope in the ordinary folk and the strength of family. The outcome is masterfully left in our hands. Elegant Emotion

Cat’s Cradle - On the Tempting of a Practitioner of Social Engineering, and His Response to Same (An Exercise in Excess)

A second and third reading is recommended for CC’s turbulent lyrical opus. An intelligent, yet dangerous bargain is offered to our hero, who provides inscrutable analysis and encapsulating logic. However, sustenance and rest are far more pragmatic. Whimsical Wonder

Awesome reviews, Remedy! Thank you for the one on my own story! :)

I understand, and have lived, that fear (almost always unfulfilled, as you mention!) Juliana! This is one of the months where I thankfully wasn't worried about that. :) Looking forward to reading your story*, CC

* (and it was wonderful - well done!)
