Hodderscape Open Submission Window

I have a very talented friend who is repped in Australia by one of the Big Ones with her first novel, and she didn't make it past the third reading either. So, this late on I don't believe it is to do with talent, just business x

I thought publishing was all about business? :)

But what few people point out to us aspiring writers from the start is how much the personal tastes of the agent/editor decide whether a book is picked up or not - not it's technical ability or artistic merit that decides it.

Good luck, Kerry :)

I wish you hadn't said that.... ;)

This is exactly how I feel too. I wonder how @anthorn and @vgunn feel about it. I see vgunn hasn't been seen on here since October last year, though, so I guess I'm unlikely to get an answer from that quarter!

October. Wow.

So sorry about disappearing. When I start writing, I tend to forget the forums (I am easily distracted).

I haven't heard back from Hodderscape. Weird, as they said they'd respond back with a yes or no. Same for Angry Robot.

Whenever I see this thread updated I get all excited on behalf of everyone who's still involved. Dear God, I'm glad I've nothing invested in it!

I think I'm worse off now knowing I'm still in it. To be honest I forgot about it and just assumed it was rejected and no email sent back. I checked and rechecked my emails to verify, I received confirmation that both mss were accepted into system. Nothing else since that time.

Nails gone now too!

I like to share the agony ;)

Fingers crossed for you, five-percenters! You can do it! :D

Don't hold your breath -- for me at least. Yes for @vgunn maybe. My bleeding stumps of fingers are crossed for everyone left in this or in any other open sub.

Kerry, have you gotten a request for a full ms via email? Someone I know in the running got one yesterday from Hodderscape, or so I was told.

No I haven't -- mixed blessing. With all the family issues recently (mother broke her back, father in hospital, folks moved in with us as an emergency, etc) my MS is still unfinished, although it won't take long to sort if the pressure's on as I can stack up the word count very nicely as soon as I have a bit of time to write -- and a request for full would definitely cut me enough slack from the family to do it, I'd say!

I very much doubt (no slaps please -- it's true) that I'll be asked for a full. I don't think my writing's of sufficient standard yet to impress a big publisher like Hodderscape.

Is your friend a Chronner? Were they given a deadline/timescale, do you know?

I don't know as I've not read yours. However I've read some junk from "big six" and even stuff with proofing mistakes.
I'm reading Jack Vance "Cadwal Chronicles", I'm on book two. Finished Book one yesterday. It's OK, but it cheers me up no end, because I'm reading more critically than I used to do and thinking, how did this get published, like this? He's a Hugo Winner too.
Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton (NEL 1993, first published by Underwood Miller in 1991)

Vibes on your family situation. I know how tough that can be.

For the request, no she's not active here. Her's was the first I've heard about a full ms--so not sure what is going on.

I know in the Harper Voyager window the finalists were asked for fulls before the last round of rejections went out - which, sadly, makes sense: they presumably had their wish list but wanted fall backs shoudl they not be ready, etc. However! They had a set number of mss planned for, and I don't think this is the case here.

I have everything crossed for you both. Which is playing havoc with the editing. Just saying;)
