Disturbing Doctor Who Rumors

Wouldn't surprise me too much. They've sort of strung out the whole Doctor regeneration part a lot so its hard to keep re-inventing that wheel. I suspect the BBC would be thinking that instead of a series that gets diminishing viewers as it goes on and then requires a BIG end few to claw them back it would be easier just to do BIG ENDINGS and cut out all the "monster of the week" parts.

Which is basically what most series are - when there is no strong source material (like a series of books) TV shows can quickly end up "theme of the week" (monster, alien, vampire etc...) between the story loaded first and last couple of episodes; with only a few little long lasting elements introduced through the bulk of the series.

So in theory you can cut the middle and focus on the prime viewer-grabbing parts.

BBC also seems to want to stop actually making stuff. From what I've heard even something big like Springwatch might even be up for going into the whole 3rd party produced and bought in model. I think the problem is that they've gotten too "rich" in some ways to the point where they require series produced by them to be utterly massive sellers and franchises - otherwise it doesn't turn enough profit and income for them.

It's a problem with big business that it can quickly end up requiring and able to only support a certain kind of product that will sell massive volumes over higher grade, higher investment products with more niche market.s

Isn't this just another version of Capaldi saying he might want to leave one day getting the traditional internet treatment of "quitting in ten minutes"?

Capaldi will have been around around, what? One and half years? There are quite a few Doctors who weren't around much longer than that. Even if it is true then it isn't as shocking as the headline wants us to believe.

Do you know what is shocking about that report? I want to "spend more time with my family." That is what politicians are told to say when they get sacked. Couldn't he come up with something better? Couldn't he tell the truth; that the show has gone down the pan and he doesn't want to go along with it?

Nobody is saying "it ain't so," as I had hoped to be reassured. That makes these rumors even more disturbing.

I am less concerned with who plays the Doctor than I am about a radical format change. I would not be happy with Doctor Who going the Sherlock route. I much prefer a weekly show to the sporadic "feature length" episode showing up on holidays and other random occasions.

That being said, it would be a shame for Capaldi to step out of the role just as he seems to have stepped into it. I think Moffat & Co. made a disasterous mistake in giving us a whole series concentrating on Clara while the Doctor was "finding himself." That may account for the significant decline in viewership.

I hope the current series pulls the disenchanted back into the ratings. While the BBC ponders its next move, I'll do what I can to stir up interest in a show that should be as immortal as its main character.

Personally, I find it incredible that a 'BBC insider' says the decline in Dr Who viewers is very worrying when they are, themselves, to blame for this decline. I'm one of those lost viewers and have no intention of going back to it.

Here's why - first - the stories have been very poor, tried to be far too clever for their own good and, in many instances, heavy handedly twee. I don't think they know what their target audience is any more.

Secondly, the scheduling. They have forgotten that Dr Who was a show for kids that was also loved by adults. By sticking it on at eight thirty on a saturday evening, they are starting to stretch the links of that chain to breaking point. I'm pretty sure that they're doing this to give their flagship Strictly (unbearably awful) the best viewing figures possible and it's costing Dr Who dear. As long as they ignore this simple reality, things are only going to get worse.

It's like a bakery I bought some shares in a few years ago and I'm now infuriated by - they open at eight in the morning and try to cater to a higher end of customer when most people want to buy pies, rolls etc. on their way to work before eight in the morning. Now they're wondering why they're struggling. When they asked for further investment, I didn't invest. No point. The same applies to this show. I've invested time in it before but there always comes a cut-off point. For me that has long since past.

It's the old mantra - do the simple things well.
Saturday - 6.00 PM - family around the telly - that's what Dr Who is all about.

I don't want to be too spoilery, but in the most recent episode (last night's), The Doctor said something, in passing, about the last regeneration having been a bit of a mistake (or words to that effect). Goodness only knows what this comment was foreshadowing....

The scheduling is an issue, I can remember the original Who being on early Saturday evening before The Generation Game. As for viewing figures, shouldn't they wait until the World Cup is over and see the figures on a normal week?

They have a good thing with Dr Who . Why don't they just not mess with it .

Look what happened Torchwood, they Had hit show right there and what did they do ? They let it go. It was one of the best tv shows they ever had. I did Miracle Day and wish they had down a follow up series. But they simply decide not do any more Torchwood. Disappointing . :(

I don't want them to mess with it. I quite enjoy the show (certain elements aside, yes, Clara, I'm looking at you) and I even managed to get my hands on the classic Doctor Who episodes to watch.

@BAYLOR Miracle Day and Children of Earth remain my favourite seasons quite possibly of any TV show ever. And the cliffhanger at the end of Miracle Day is still driving me nuts.

And the think the reference was more to do with him not meant to have an extra set of regenerations, at least that was the way I took it.

As to the main rumour, has anyone other than the Mirror reported on it?

I've not seen anything on any of the ear-to-the-ground SF sites or magazines, other than Jenna Coleman leaving. I just wondered how much of it has been taken out of context and jumping in with speculation following the slump in viewing figures.

Yes, same. 'A clerical error' as in an extra set of regenerations got posted to the wrong address :D

In Classic Who I have lots of favorites , On that really stand out is Inferno . It's suspenseful and well told . Epic stuff. (y)

What the BBC should do is sit back and be grateful of what they have and do everything they have to keep the she the success that it is. Stop splitting up the seasons. Why splitting the season downs' work? is because the season are only 13 episodes you can;t just gee the viewer 7 at the beginning and televises the rest months later, that will frustrate viewers and diminish the ratings.

Miracle Day did well enough in the Rating to justify a follow up. They should have done a follow up.

@BAYLOR Don't tell me anything! I didn't start yet since I don't have much time for TV with new job. I plan on letting it fill up my weekly Doctor Who spot once this season runs its course.

I'll never understand why Miracle Day didn't get a follow up. I honestly hate it.

I hate unresolved cliffhanger endings.

their flagship Strictly (unbearably awful)

Thank you!

I was staying with my parents last weekend who adore Strictly and I had to sit through it while I was eating! it's an abhorrent bastardisation of dance and I can't understand the appeal of the show, the guests, lacklustre artists and puling judges.

Anyway, back on topic ;)

I stopped watching Dr Who when Catherine Tate came on board - that was just too far a stretch for me; if you're going to do comedy, I'd prefer it in the same vein as Farscape.

It had a golden age a few years back and though I'd be reluctant to apply the phrase jumped the shark, I think it's time to retire it for a few years. Bring it back refreshed for 2020!
