The How To's of Outlining?

I'm with Hex - the first time I "finished" Mayhem it took me six months whereas the synopsis took me eighteen months to write. ;) And actually I think it was pretty much written by the kind people on the boards by salvaging what they could from my wreckage.
 
Synopses are horrible, especially if the submission criteria is to reduce a 170K book down to a one page double spaced synopsis!!!
