if I'd wanted to raise the issue of cultural appropriation
I don't know from where, and from whom, the impetus for this current example came (and I know nothing about those to whose words links have been provided, other than Rowling herself), I am wary of casting aspersions here. However, I have to suspect that many instances have less to do with the issue (any issue), and more to do with boosting the public profile of the person raising the instance. In such cases, complaining about a book full of the most egregious nonsense written by a nobody would simply be a waste of time. But reading (perhaps through gross misrepresentation) something into the words of someone who's very famous...?

Yes, but striking a balance would've been the best option, IMO: going after someone known, but not as popular as JK. Otherwise you are at risk of being ignored (if attacking a nobody) or being made to be the bad guy/ridiculed (if going up against someone too popular).

Out of interest, I looked up the Al Jazeera steam that prompted the thread. If anyone is interested, you can find it here - Reimagining Native Americans in the arts. I don't think it particularly hammers in the idea of censorship, or even overly bashes JK herself. Interesting discussion, though, and it raised many of the points already mentioned in this thread.

We're all suckers for conflict and discussion, otherwise why be in a forum? :D
