Haha, not at all DG but I see what you are saying. Not sure about vertical lettering, but we'll throw it together and see what works best.
Still a bit confused about the thumbnail resolutions though.

but we do like the vertically written title, so this is what we have so far. It isn't finished, our artist is finishing as we speak and is making the image bigger around so we can crop it however we want before adding the text ourselves (by ourselves, I mean Darren, as he used to be a printer so does these things, I just lift heavy objects and stuff.)
Anyway, here is a mock up of what we have so far.

Yes. I tried the first option and forgot to try 2nd option of rotated characters..
It does kinda work.

Yes, most spines start at top for same reason. We tend to read downwards.

Your names are still going to get lost in a thumbnail - I think you need a stronger font for them. (i try mine out as forum avatars - if they can't be visible at that size, I figure they're not dynamic enough, because I use my most current one as my avatar.

Dangerous words for any novelist to use, in my experience.

The figure and title are good -- but the font on the authors' names emphasises the vertical strokes and almost loses the horizontal, meaning it ends up looking almost like a barcode.
