Does the series give proof to some book theories?

HBO cleared it up on their blog

Was about to post that myself! I thought it was pretty clear anyway, given Lyanna told Ned that Robert would kill the baby if he knew the truth. Pretty obvious indication that the child was a Targ...

Lyanna is Ned's sister? I don't remember that being mentioned before. In the book or show. Not sure how I missed or forgot that. Which book/chapter has the bit with the info of what she told Ned about not saying who the father is?
I thought that he was portrayed as her lover rushing up to her, but brother makes sense. A bit odd they don't mention it on the show.

Remind me who in the books was the one touted as possibly being Neds lover then?
Edit: Ah that was Ashara Dayne. Ok as Lyanna is confirmed as the mother then it all makes sense now.

 How on earth anyone missed that Lyanna is Brandon Ned and Benjen's sister is beyond me! I thought it was one of the most important plot points in the entire story. If she's not Ned's sister then nothing else makes any sense...

I guess with the Lannister twincest, some of the first time viewers had initially thought Starks might have practiced it. I would know because I was the one who instigated the cult following among my circle of friends.
They had since retracted from their ridiculous ideas after watching a few more episodes of the firat season so you don't have to worry. ;)

I have read the books and numerous threads on this site, but somehow I forgot that detail. Probably related to the gap in time since reading that point. Also the fact that Lyanna has never made an appearance before so some haziness on who she was. I think at some point I just got the name and story with Ashara mixed up. Another character from the GOT history who was briefly mentioned.
There were various implications that Catelyn didn't love Jon Snow because she thought he was from Ned's affair (assumed Ashara). I'm sure that's where my mix up comes from. Ned then never told Cat who the parents were. Either to protect Lyanna's honour or to protect Jon.
As for nothing else makes sense I think it is just the Jon Snow parentage part that it impacts, in terms of what has already occurred. It does mean the R+L=J storyline that people keep banging on about is much more obvious than I thought. At least that is cleared up.

On the theories standpoint I suppose you could say that Littlefinger's ambition to sit on the Iron Throne was a theory, that now has been confirmed. Classic rags to riches. Ok not rags, but quite a career arc.

Not really. It's Ned saying, 'She was my sister,' as they stand beside Lyanna's crypt. There's no way that that could be misinterpreted. Robert is then referring to Viserys and Dany.

Just so.
You might want to watch that episode again--I think it's the first episode of the first season. ;)

I just want to say, after reading back my own post, that I really didn't mean to come across as confrontational or insulting. I was just very flabbergasted!

Not too surprising that some people who have only watched the show were confused. Season one is probably the only time Rhaegar/Lyanna/Robert/Ned and the war was really talked about, and it hasn't been a focus on the show in a while (apart from Dany reclaiming her throne).

As for future marriages, with the way the show has gone on, it feels like Jon is going to marry Sansa once his true parentage is somehow established. They were talking about Dany marrying in Westeros, and I'm at a loss for which existing player she would marry (except Tyrion which would be amazing).

Edit: And I guess I should caveat that I only mean in the show, since the books/show deviate to some extent, and these connections aren't as clear.

They are cousins. Maybe that is ok I guess..

Dany is Jon's aunt. She's Rhaegar's sister. They could marry for political purposes but I highly doubt they'll be falling in love or anything, either in the books or the show. Targaryens married brother to sister for hundreds of years so aunt and nephew isn't a stretch.

My money is on Dany hooking up with Yara on the show.
