August 2016: What have you been reading?

Count of Monte Cristo - Alexander Dumas, complete and unabridged in translation

100 pages down, 1100 to go. I am enjoying it though. A bit overwrought, as romantic literature can be, but serially addictive and fun.
is my favorite novel. follow by the name of the wind and the wiseman's fear.

Re-read three Roger Zelazny's - Jack of Shadows, Nine Princes of Amber and The Guns of Avalon. Found the first two a bit disappointing compared to long ago memories of them, though the Amber series picks up with book 2, (TGoA).

Also read a classic, Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers and the third in the Jenny Nimmo children's fantasy trilogy, The Chestnut Soldier.

Forgot to say that earlier in the month I read two history books on the Salem witchcraft trials - The Witches: Salem 1692 by Stacey Schiff which wasn't that good, and The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community under Seige by Marilynn Roach which was a lot better.

Having finished Jonathan Bate's biog of Ted Hughes, which I'd very much recommend, I've started The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley. Feels a bit by-the-numbers so far, but intriguing enough to keep me going for now.

Today after a few sleepless nights I will hopefully finish Pat Rothfuss' King killer Chronicles.

Have to say, I've really enjoyed spending time with Kvothe - Bast, not so much :p

Busy reading Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles... It is a nice long series so it will keep me company for a little while!

Er... the series isn't finished yet, there's still a third volume (not counting the novella The Slow Regard of Silent Things) to be released. It's been a long, long wait with - as far as I know - no sign of it ending soon.:(

Just finished Callahan's Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson. Highly enjoyable with a heavy dose of punnery thrown in for good measure.

Just finished Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuval a superb page turner using memos, meetings and general non narrative insights to reveal its charms, sequel due in April 2017.
Intriguing twist at the end too means I will be first in line at Waterstones...
Best book I've read since Altered Carbon!

That does look like an intriguing idea. I think I'll add to my wish list.

The Rose of Fire by Carlos Ruiz Zafon - A short but enjoyable bit of back story to the Cemetary of Forgotten Books series. My thanks to @erynosh for locating a copy! :)
Like a Mighty Army by David Weber - the roller coaster continues with a much better book this time. More here.
Inish Carraig by Jo Zebedee - a very good book by our very own Jo. Well written and well produced. More here.
AI Unbound: Two Stories of Artificial Intelligence by Nancy Kress - the first was good the second not so much so. More here.
The Last Log of the Lachrimosa by Alastair Reynolds - A very good short story set in Reynolds' Revelation Space universe.
Leviathan by Jack Campbell - an excellent finale (at least I think it's a finale!) to this addictive series. More here.

I enjoyed the tv show so much that I went and got the whole series... and didn't get past the second book. o_O The second book just felt... forced. The writing and the characters reactions to the events in the first book, all of it just felt like they had sat down and found the most boring and clique ways for them to act. I wanted to start the book and see them being the characters I like in the first book. A little battered but still fundamentally the same and they just weren't. :(

Umm are you sure you don't mean Leviathan Wakes by James Corey? In which case I agree with you though I didn't even like the first book in that series and never went on to the second.

Don't worry about it - easy mistake to make and Leviathan is not exactly a common book title component.

I've not seen the TV series yet, though I may do so in the next few months as I did record it. I am a little wary of the clichéd characters though. But I guess I can just turn it off... ;) My full (and very unimpressed) thoughts on Leviathan Wakes are here where you'll also find a bit of a mixed discussion on it.

Welcome to the Chrons by the way! (I meant to say that in my previous post but forgot!)

Haha!! Well the characters are a lot less cliched in the tv show than the books. Somehow in the process of re-writing the story for the show they managed to fix those little issues that where so (obvious?) in the novels.

Oh! And thanks for the welcome! I am enjoying myself so far! :p
